Steve Smith said:
A visit to Tamworth on Wednesday 25th June 2014 witnessed a Cross Country driver over-run the station platform by some distance!

The train wasn't exactly going slow either through the station but there was soon a rancid smell of brakes wafting into the air and the train came to a halt just before the signal. After being there some minutes, the video captures the driver walking back to the rear cab, unlocking the door and climbing aboard. He can also be seen on the telephone, presuming to get the OK to reverse along the track back to the station to collect his forgotten passengers!

Eventually after some delay, the Cross Country Voyager heads north again en-route to Glasgow Central.

We even get a wave and a thumbs up from the driver, more than likely in embarrassment than anything else!

Never seen anything like that before. Good job Tamwoth High Level wasn't a terminus!
Has anyone seen this video? The driver appears to have overshot the platform and then travels back. Does this happen often?

I have a question too, I hope this doesn't come across as me trying to be some back seat driver. Should the driver have driven the train back with the tail lights still on white?

It doesn't happen often as far as I am aware.

I imagine the lights need to be switched to indicate to other trains/signallers (I doubt they can see in this case) which direction the train is moving.

When I opened the link I was expecting maybe half a carriage over the end of the platform....

Quite a shock to see what had actually happened! But no harm done in the end

It's very infrequent but driving the train back into the platform is permissable with authority from the controlling signaller and control.

You do not need to change the lights if a wrong direction move is less than 400 metres, if the move is more than that then you need to change lights

If the train is making a wrong direction movement due to a station overrun not exceeding 400 Meters then the headlights and tail lights do not need to be changed over (section 4.5 of Module TW1).

EDIT....SkinnyDave beat me to it :)

No. If he's working wrong direction over a distance of less than 400 yards (440 metres) the headlights do not need to be changed over to tail lamps. If the movement is over 400 yards, then tail lamps should be lit.

It is mainly to do with not causing the driver of an oncoming train to fill his underpants when he comes around a corner to see a pair of tail lamps facing him.

I don't think it is wise to continue with this thread. Not knowing the full circumstances of the incident, we should not judge or even incriminate the driver.

It's had over 1000 views on Youtube already and was published on 27th June. I think that cat is well and truly out of the bag with this one....

It was probally a simple mistake, with the driver forgetting that service stopped at Tamworth, as some are fast to Burton-on-Trent or Derby which do not stop at Tamworth

Also if the SPT was used, the driver is honest when reporting it and there isn't an attempt to cover anything up then I doubt anything major will happen

We all know voyagers have useless brakes, just look at the mess at Chester station for further examples!.

I guess we will never know exactly what caused the over run but they happen, drivers are only human after all!, nobody died and we all got home safely so a happy ending by all

And as a plus point, any delays on that line for a while and further along the voyagers route will get attributed to that incident rarer than immediate assumption of o code!!!.... Score 1 for the signaller ;)

Not that it would happen like that of course, that's just a fictional example!!!

This is a very rare event, but hey it happens. Trying to stop a train on a sixpence isnt easy during October to December either - though this video was shot in summer.

Not so sure why someone thinks brakes on a Voyager train are useless.....are you saying they are unsafe to be used as passenger trains? Or is it really tongue in cheek as stated ?

Tounge and cheek regarding Chester. Clearly more virgin voyager lovers than I thought.

They have fantastic braking capabilities I'm sure

The delay attribution on your side must be pretty hopeless then. Ours almost always get dobbed to the TOC or FOC once we've told them what we know (assuming it's not our fault!), only coming back as an O-code if the driver then reports that he was checked somewhere. Still, I'd rather swallow an OC than have a driver in rather more bother for a station overrun...sense of proportion and all that.

I would rather see attribution disappear all together!. Like I said for the defence of the driver (and any member of railway staff for that matter) we are only human, mistakes will be made and so long as a life hasn't been at risk or taken let's learn from it and move on. But I guess it's not that kind of a world

Our delay attribution guys are 50/50 in fairness. Some ring up and will take on board what you did and why and will look into what attribution they think fits best. We have a few at the moment though who think that they know better than the signalman and will ring up and tell us it's an o code before even listening to what we have to say.

It's just one of those things, thankfully I *usually* have a valid explanation into my moves I carry out (except for sending a class 4 75mph in front of one of mr Branson's finest at Brinklow junction on the down!..... Single line for a good few miles and the freight was standing start...... Yet to live that one down..... Still only human!)

But that would be getting network rail the fine and costing the company thousands of pounds (probably tens of!). Like I've said. I'd rather like us all to go home at the end of the day safe and happy and let the pressure of delays on staff disappear but I wouldnt misappropriate delay to anyone else or any other department at the same time.

I'm sure it was mini lad, no one wanted to see that happen at Chester. I'll give an example of when I know the brakes must have not worked as well on a voyager. I was on Stafford station one night spotting some freight (probably about a year ago?!) and a voyager turned up (wasn't timetabled so was a bit curious)

I asked a member of station staff and they informed me that the train was for Barton under neeswood (think that was right) and that the driver had over shot/missed his signal at Lichfield. We both joked that it must have been dodgy brakes. All tongue and cheek

In alistair g's defence, I don't think he means any harm or malice in that, but I'm new hear so perhaps I don't know what the tone is normally like in the forum. He seems to defend drivers in what I read later on.

Can we all hug and make up or is this not the right forum for that? (All tongue and cheek before somebody tries to haze the new guy!)

You do not need to change the lights if a wrong direction move is less than 400 metres, if the move is more than that then you need to change lights
On the one occasion that I've ever seen it happen, the driver flicked the lights for the reverse back into the station platform; it was far less than the limit distance - can't do any harm doing so.

Let me now, once and for all, apologise to everyone.

I'm not quite sure how it became quite so, but clearly an earlier remark was taken in a manner it was not meant to. No point did I implicate any driver in any is doing and the brakes was an off the cuff remark which I thought would be taken as it was meant to be.... Tounge and cheek.

Moderators, I don't wish to upset anyone, so please if you so see fit to do so delete any and all posts of mine, I fact, delete my whole account if need be.

I'm very sorry to one and all, nothing was ever meant by any of it perhaps I needed a little smiley face or wink at the end of it, but there u go.

I'm big advocator of supporting any and all railway staff on any forums, and anyone on here who knows me, will no doubt know that anyway. But I can't do anymore than apologise for a comment so clearly misunderstood.

Ta ra forum members, it's been emotional :) ;) :( ;-(

I wouldn't worry about it that much - not sure who's supposed to have been offended! Remember what they say about how little the actual choice of words counts for in our communication - most of it's facial expressions and tone of voice, neither of which can really be conveyed on here, so it's easy to get hold of the wrong end of the stick.

On delay attribution - I've no problem with it in principle, as long as it's an accurate and sensible attempt to attribute delays. When they start arguing at length about whether a bird strike involved a bird larger or smaller than a pheasant, or start dobbing things where they clearly don't belong ("following late", even though the offending train was 30 minutes in front?), I start to wonder what it's all about...

I asked about the original "bad brakes" comment. Only because I drive Voyagers and know them to have very good brakes (Well in the dry anyway!!) Certainly not offended in any way though

I do tend to agree, a little consistency would be nice at times. What box (or area if u don't wish to mention) do u operate if u don't mind my asking.

I perhaps read your comment wrong then minilad, just the way certain bits were in bold I thought you had taken offence, certainly none was intended!!

You an XC man or a Euston - Holyhead man?

Not at all. Just put it in bold to highlight what my comment was about.
I'm XC. Well versed in stopping at Tamworth :D

Still not great, is it? I assume the WSP is pretty good but how many times does the sander run empty during slippy season?
