A Pacer 
A loco-hauled train formed of PV mk II carriages. Steam heated for atmosphere and cosiness, hauled by something interesting like a 37. In short, a train on the West Highland or Far North lines circa 1984.
From a less subjective POV, the greatest train ever made was and is the HST.

One that gets me to my destination.
Currently FSR 158s, as I use them quite a lot just now.

I was born about 20 years too late to enjoy things like that *sigh*.
Otherwise a train that gets me to my destination generally speaking. A few specific favourites would be 158s, 180s, 390s, HSTs and 91+Mk4s.

HSTs are my favourites, though I like travelling in class 170s, and have an affection for class 180s

142s, 156s, 158s, 222s, HSTs, 225s, 170s, any Mark stock from 2 onwards (don't really do 1s!), SE HSTs (I forgot the class number!), even 150s, any FCC stock, and the majority of SN's/SE's stocks...
To be honest, if I get to there in one piece, I would happily do Penzance-Wick on a Pacer. It doesnt really matter to me, so long as the stock isn't a 220/221/390!

TBH these memories seem recent, although in reality it's ages ago and I'm going to be 40 next year
Really, really don't know where the time's gone and I can't believe how much the railway's changed. Things like steam heat that were so normal now seem utterly nuts even to someone like me who experienced it. Don't feel 40 though although of couse that hideous landmark is still 3 months awayHaha not as young as some round these parts
Well you know what they say 40 is the new 30 or something like that anyway
I wasn't even alive during this period but it seems incredible to me the rate of change over the last few decades! We've gone from in the 1980s a railway that operationally was relatively unchanged from the 1930s or earlier to a system based on units and fixed formation freight in the space of 20 years or less even!

i hate the things ! Worst thing Grand Central ever did! I also like HST's i use grand central nearly every day to get to Sunderland from Hartlepool. Much more comfier than Northern rail 
!What's wrong with them?
What could GC have used instead to operate the number of services they do?

I quite like the 180s, I think they look absolutely great in GC livery. I find them quite comfy as well. Obviously they never will be the most reliable units but I prefer them over Voyagers.

I once travelled in the secondman's seat of an NIR 111 class GM going at full whack on bullhead rail on wooden sleepers from Belfast to Dublin and back and, while no deltic, it was not only better than a 143, but significantly better than any rail journey I've ever made before or since
True, a 156 is a nice enough unit, especially in a world that dares to contain 170s or 185s, but surely, surely, there must be something you like better??

Doesn't matter what's behind the coupling, a Union Pacific Big Blow gas turbine Co-Co+Co-Co+3-3 from across the Pond. 8,500 hp of SCREAMING (at slow speed). In unapologetic all-yellow.
And as the APT was scrapped, no more about it.

Makes me feel old when somebody says they like a 390.
Like most 60s/70s/80s rolling stock; That sums me up to be honest.
Hauling streamliner stock, and you have heaven on rails
. About all that's left of that are the two beaver-tail coaches, one of which I travelled in at a GCR Gala a couple of years ago. Most comfortable vehicle of any kind I've ever been in, with the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in full-stop. Well worth the extra fiver to get in.Modern traction, well, you still can't beat a Valenta-powered HST screaming out of York or Newcastle. Failing that (for really modern) 390s are OK, and Javelins are impressive, especially with all that acceleration.

Not at all, i love the 156's also, at full pelt, they're fantastic, if a little noisy.
