It is exactly due to the Derby works.
Because XC are diverting away from Derby, with additional running time as a result, trains are effectively picking up the path of the service 30 minutes later from Birmingham New Street.
So Aberdeen/Glasgow/Edinburgh starters are generally running to Reading/Southampton instead of Plymouth/Penzance. Newcastle starters are generally running to Plymouth/Penzance instead of Reading/Southampton.
The same applies northbound.
Manchester services aren't affected by this.

This is one of the big problems with XC - they are fairly powerless to change the timetable - so when there's a disruption (e.g. Derby) they are stuck running the same paths from (Southampton/ Plymouth - ) Birmingham to Burton and the same paths from Chesterfield to Newcastle (- Edinburgh - Glasgow/ Aberdeen) - so the only way to cope with the disruption is to increase the Birmingham - Sheffield journey time by half an hour (which means that the "ex Southampton" service now runs to Edinburgh via Leeds, and the "ex Plymouth" service runs to Newcastle via Doncaster).
As a result, you've got services waiting at Burton for ten minutes to get a path further north, so that they'll get to Chesterfield in time to take up the path of the service that would normally have been half an hour behind them.
This inflexibility is why I'm against any ideas for replacing Voyagers with trains that can't meet Voyager paths (i.e. don't accelerate as well) since you can't just add a minute here and a minute there to the XC timetable - you either meet the Voyager paths or get delayed half an hour to meet the path behind you.
As a result, you've got services waiting at Burton for ten minutes to get a path further north, so that they'll get to Chesterfield in time to take up the path of the service that would normally have been half an hour behind them.

Yes, taking 9 1/4 hrs Glasgow to Southampton, a journey that normally takes 6 3/4 hrs changing at Wolverhampton. Even if you missed the connection, you'ld still get there earlier.

Should be running via Doncaster to the SW, since they can't work South of Reading (XC don't have any SSL bogied Mk3s).

Oh definitely hence it is very unlikely to happen, but it is possible to send an HST to Reading if needed.

Of course. I see 170s are now cleared for the Bristol route & Voyagers are a regular performer on the Leicester shuttle.

Yep we had 2x170 vice Voyager from Temple Meads to Birmingham a couple of Months ago. And I think the Leicester Voyager helps with Route Retention for Birmingham TMs.

They go normal route.
The diversion is between Chesterfield and Burton-on-Trent otherwise they're running the usual routes.

Pity a spare HST sits at Craigentinny on peak summer Saturdays and Sundays given how busy the trains get.

Apart from slightly less seating capacity in both classes (unless doubled up) the class 170 isn't a bad vehicle to travel in.

What? This was in response to the Glasgow to Southampton service. There are no booked 170s to Bristol or Manchester at the moment.
