They shouldnt be putting them through 7, there is a loco ban through there due to a dodgy set of points.

If you read the NR notice properly you will see it quotes "loco hauled freight trains" WSMR are passenger trains. The original notice was changed. So WSMR can use any platform at Shrewsbury.

How long does it take NR to repair/replace a set of points?!!

In fact, they've been dithering over work at Shrewsbury station for years now. They still haven't got round to sorting out the signalling on the south end of platform 3.

Anyone know when this will be done, so finally passenger trains may depart southbound from that platform?

Just want to say, I had a great meal on Wrexham and Shropshire just before christmas, the staff were second to none very friendly and the food was out of this world! I had soup, the full xmas dinner with all the trimmings and xmas pud to follow and he came out later with free mince pies!

I would highly recomend the food!

I was on the signal sighting meeting to replace the signals at the South end of Platform 4 and also install points and a signal on platform 3 south end about 3 years ago and nothing has been mentioned since. I think that money is the problem as the cost back then for the alterations were in excess of 1M quid. The only route permitted currently from the south end of P3 is on to the down Hereford line via a shunt disc signal, there is no permitted line of route to Abbey Foregate due to the points so a lot of work is required. Also you cannot access P3 from the North end unless doing a shunt move so to be honest it will only be terminating services that will benefit from a main line signal at the South of P3

The signal at the south end has had its business case approved apparently. But as and when anything will be done is another matter.

Thanks guys.

Perhaps the work on the south end of platforms 3 & 4 will be done at the same time as repairing the points at the south end of platform 7? Or is that too much like common sense?

I still feel that it is a waste of money sorting out the South end of P3 at Salop unless they do the North end so there is a line of route off the up chester and up Crewe lines. The only trains able to use platform 3 would be terminating services and the Cardiff - Holyhead and the terminating services currently have the bays to do that. The only benfit would be for the Aber services to drop into 3 and the Holyhead into 4 or visa versa. The work required to allow Loco Hauled freight services to depart the bays or 7 is a diamond crossover and I am led to believe that NR get most of these manufactured in Germany and that is probably the delay.

I believe that the main reason for getting the south end of platform 3 sorted is for Aberystwyth-Birmingham (and vice versa) trains to use 3 in future (essentially employing 3 as a third bay platform). I think it's in the Wales RUS.

Looks like they are planning to add an extra service, as the Chiltern May timetable consultation document mentions retiming some Chiltern services to allow it.

Is it an extra service for WSMR or Arriva though? Either way, it could be the fabled Aberystwyth-London train. (If it's WSMR running an Aber-London train, Shrewsbury will have loco-hauled services on all 5 lines running into the town!)

No, definitely Wrexham and Shropshire : see the following

Additionally, to facilitate the introduction of an additional Wrexham & Shropshire service, the following minor re-timings will occur in the evening peak:

1833 to Bicester to depart at 1836
1837 to Aylesbury via High Wycombe to depart at 1839
1840 to Aylesbury via Amersham to depart at 18

Ah okay, thanks. Surely there would be an additional service in the other direction too? (Making it 6 trains each way a day, otherwise 5 would go one way and 6 the other.)

I guess so, that would make sense!
Am keen to use Wrexham and Shropshire, but waiting for their new stock to arrive, if it ever does!

Not all of it's hired in. IIRC the MK3s with the W&S logos on are their own, but were just painted into Blue & Grey to match the Cargo-D stock.

The article isn't very clear, it both suggests an extra service and then goes on to say the total remains at five:

W&S managing director Andy Hamilton said: “In response to feedback from our passengers, we’re considering changes to the timetable to provide an additional afternoon service from London.

“There’s currently a significant gap between our 4.33pm and 8.03pm departures.

“We’re in close discussions with Chiltern Railways regarding amendments to the current timetable, which would allow for a third afternoon service.

Now May, I'm afraid...:(

Stoke Marcroft have too much work maintaining DBS rolling stock and other items. WSMR will recieve the first set, then send away another set to be done I'd imagine, as some of their own carriages are already in service.

An "additional afternoon service" yes - but probably at the expense of another service during the day?

As I said earlier in the thread, they can't just add a service going one way - they'd have to add a service going the other way too. And they're not saying that. So I guess the later quote of 5 trains a day is accurate. Basically they're shifting the timetable about to provide a service in the late afternoon.

 If the 1123 service from Wrexham General to London Marylebone was instead operated two hours later at 1323, thus arriving in London at 1722 (presently 1522), it could then return northbound at circa 1833 (instead of 1633 as at present) and thus arrive in Wrexham at around 2228 (instead of 2028 ). Obviously, this depends on the availability of train paths. (I understand that Chiltern's timetable is being adjusted slightly to accomodate the above).

Such a timetable re-jig would, however, leave a large gap in W+S services during the middle of the day!
