But if you use the logic that faster acceleration is better, then you get more powerful trains using more energy to save just a few seconds yet the cost in environmental terms plus the financial cost of producing more electricity is not worth it.

well, yes,. but MUs accelarate a lot faster and are more efficent, although even EMUs don't compare to any form of loco haulage for comfort, if the WC timetable was a proper intercity one then the accelaration would come into account a lot less, so they would be able to have loco and stock, or even multiple loco and stock for spliting services like in the good old days of spliting at crewe, that would free up some TV paths

VWC do split at Crewe, they add or take off a class 57, good job this is being subsidised.

Ooh, is this another opportunity for me to brag about having travelled, albeit very slowly within the Ashford depot, on a Class 395? Was very cool though and a number of new experiences for me.

Exactly, plus one thing else that faster acceleration does... knackers out the tracks. Burning from slippage & creep from harder braking are taking it's toll on the actual rails we run on. NR or railtrack did a study a while back when I was still with them & found out that lines traversed by newer, lighter & faster accerating trains were being worn out twice or more quicker than lines with older, heavier traction.

Tried these today from Telford to London and absolutely could not fault them.

CargoD stock was in great nick (travelled in a declassified ex VWC FO with those ace huge seats).

Staff were superb, guard very chatty and enthusiastic about her new job, spent the whole journey sitting in the saloon talking to people rather than hiding in a cubby hole or first class, and buffet stewards were more than happy to serve even standard class passengers at seat for things like bacon rolls if they'd take a minute or two to prepare (rather than have you stood blocking the narrow aisle ala XC).

Altogether the best travelling experience I think I've had with any TOC.

I went on the first day and managed it for a lot of the journey but then there was noone in the carriage. I'll probably try and get on those cargo Ds again before they go.

Even you should be able to distinguish between a train run specifically for enthusiasts and a train which isn't.

Providing you don't make an arse of yourself and stick your head right out of the window then I wouldn't forsee any problems - quite why you'd want to with a 67 is up for debate however.

I imagine you'd be very unpopular right at the moment however with it being warm because you would bugger up the air conditioning by having the droplights open - the only real faults with the stock being that the air powered saloon doors are fairly air leaky so don't always close properly.

Personally I didn't bother and just sat enjoying the very comfortable and quiet journey down to London.

They should be drop down as you need to open the doors from the outside.

Seems quite quiet at the northern end, Wrexham to wolves you only see a few people on it during the day. Probably get's busier on the way though. But it's still early days & these things take time.

Hardly any on the 9.06 Tame Bridge departure on Tuesday. Probably had 25 on the 11 o'clock ish on Wrexham to Shrewsbury. Plenty wanting to get on at Salop though. Its a good set up though, friendly staff, constantly checking for rubbish and the loos, reasonable buffet too and of course its comfy.

I reportedly missed the W&S running through Birmingham New Street last night, as my Newquay-Manchester HST sat there for 20 minutes, and I went off in sight of food...

The service that went through New Street towards Wrexham last night about 21:00 looked about half to three quarters full although I expect some of those passengers may have been using the service due to the line into Euston being shut.

Does anyone know how loadings are?

I travelled on the W&S on Monday 12th May using the 1610 Marylebone - Wrexham throughout. Only 9 passengers in std class leaving London and those loadings didn't improve throughout the journey. Only two on at Banbury, despite calling at Wovles its not shown in the timetable as such. Only about 5 passengers off the train at Wrexham.

A mate of mine got a service from Tame Bridge Parkway back to London later that evening, loadings quite low on that service as well (arrived in London at 2215).


I can't see the service lasting....its to slow to be a viable option to London, even more so when Virgin starts from Wrexham. Enjoy it while you can.
