Worst train interiors

Looking out of the window and no room and complete overcrowding.. or a not so good view and a heck of a lot less overcrowding.. pretty obvious why they are how they are..

I already do appreciate my 317s, I can't say I'm best pleased that the uncomfortable 379s will be finding their way onto Cambridge services... :-x

Not a fan of the older FSR 158 refurb. I find the seats pretty uncomfortable.
Always disappointed when the train to/from Stirling is a 158 with that interior rather than the newer style one (though a 170 is preferred over both).

Thats an old photo as the swing door seperating the supposed 1st class section has been removed from all 158s on SR. I prefer these to the new refurbs (701-725)

have to agree with earlier comments on NX Scotrails 158 refurb, not at all cumfortable. My vote for this section is voyagers and any diziro. Also happilly give 156s a mention - low backed seats and too hot.

Without a shadow of a doubt the FGW 142's - those Merseytravel seats look luxurios in comparison! What always baffles me though is why people still insist on calling them 'bus seats', given that the vast majority of buses have far superior seating.

You do realise Northern are the pacer kings, they have virtually every variety.

The FGW 142s are exactly the same (with new seat pattern) as the ex-First North Western 142s that Northern operate in vast quantities - they are the same thing

The seats on the Merseytravel 142 look better, but they are ROCK HARD and offer virtually no legroom. At least the "bus seats" ones have a small amount of padding.

Onto Cambridge services? Which ones?

Out of the 30 379s, 20 are for the Stansted Express and 10 are for Cambridge - Liverpool St services. They are due to be used on some Cambridge services from the timetable change in December. That's all I know.

The Southeastern Class 375/9s have possibly the worst interior of any modern train. Cramped, uncomfortable seats in standard, packed in far too tight. I dread it when one of these turns up on my train in the mornings as everything has either gone numb or is in complete agony by the time I get off at Victoria.

Though they do have comedy value when trying to watch the more corpulent guards going sideways down the aisle.

Do you have internal pics I take it they are like the centre coaches on southern 377/4 etc?

I think overall the Electrostars are pretty good offering a smooth ride and you can drift off to sleep on one I think. The astroturf seats Southern use are forgiveable because they have kept the interior looking good and with decent leg room it is still possible to have a nap. There are usually good window views and the carpet is very smart.

I think I could put up with a 375/9...

Another vote for the 158s. When I wrote my post last night, I forgot to mention the slightly terrifying way the doors 'explode' outwards when you open them.

There's certainly an impressive bang as they open.

Interestingly, the Merseyrail seats are infinately worse to sit on than the traditional bus type seats. I was travelling on a bus seat Pacer on the stopper from Sheffield to Manchester Pic yesterday, and whilst not ideal it wasn't too bad over a long time. I defy anyone to sit in a Merseyrail Pacer seat for longer than ten minutes. They have no padding and the angles are all wrong. Quite frankly the worst type of seat I've ever encountered.

Personally I don't like the interior on a 350/2 - too cramped.

However I do like the LM 153s, nice and spacious; by standards of 2+3 seating, I like the central trains 150 interior - you can generally fit in the seats and they're nice and springy

Why is it that London Midland can't simply replace the 3+2 seating on 350/2's with the 2+2 seating on 350/1's? Nobody likes 3+2 seating!

I quite like the 350/1's. They're spacious, have plenty of tables, have good AC, etc. - the only let down being the toilets. The 350/2's are absolutely horrible! Nobody ever sits in the middle seats because they are too cramped, there are no tables, all of the seats are uncomfortable, many seats face each other so there isn't enough legroom, and the gangways are awfully narrow. The interior also looks much older than the 350/1's, even though the trains themselves are very modern and were built 4 years later!

The only time I'm happy when a 350/2 turns up is when I have a First Class ticket, as there is a larger difference between First and Standard Class!

Meh, I suppose it's all a matter of taste.

The Merseyrail Pacers are the worst in my book. Utterly shocking. I'm not all that fond of the 313 interior either (on FCC trains). It's very bland and shabby. In contrast, its big brother on the FCC network (the 365) feels sturdy and well finished.

Yep, it's the same as the 450 interior (although with green seats), not a bad interior but the 458 puts any 3+2 interior to shame.

I reckon the 333s have a good 3-2 interior that could rival them! The aisles are rather narrow on the 458s, which is probably where the extra comfort is built in.

That is very true. Sitting in one of the Priority Seats at the back of Coach A can be a wonderful journey (particularly when you have both seats to yourself), but sitting near the shop in Coach C with lots of noises and people passing by every minute can be a horrible journey.

Personally I find the Pendolino interior to be very nice. I like the "spaceship" feel!

Pendo over voyager as there are more carriages, it is an electric train and it utilises its tilt! Provided you have a window seat and with no bulky bags I reckon you can have an enjoyable journey on one.

People walking up and down the aisle annoys me on any train especially people who spend ages standing up before sitting down!

The pendo shop is nice and spacious although I haven't used it myself.

If legroom is like the voyagers it could be better, however, as the desiro 444 has much better leg room. There is no space to spread out on a voyager. Furthermore looking at meridian trains they appear to have aligned the tables up better with the windows. Tables on voyagers can look very odd with a great bulkhead there. I am not sure why virgin decided to place luggage stacks by windows instead of by bulkheads but this has been rectified on XC

Oh I ask again... the metal bar under the voyager seats.... does anyone use them and do they serve a formal function??

I think trains like the voyager are clearly poorly designed whereas the 350 etc are good trains but with undesirable seating.

They look like some dark blue carpets would really finish the interior. Too much light grey/white.
