I can think of the most pointless. St Johns, I go past that concrete block every day and I never see anyone there.

3/ Paddington - YOU NEED TO SHOUT because of the noise!
4/ Dawlish/Teignmouth - Druggies & Drunks. Yuck!

On whole I don't think we're too bad down here in the West for crappy stations, it is just on the odd occasion we get the low life's appear.

Blackburn is the worst for facilities - and location of them!

Surely it's New Street? Although I would like to suggest my local major station [Bath Spa] on a secondary level of "least customer friendly" - no lifts (rebuffed AGAIN), very unhelpful staff, and too busy for its own good. Not to mention that the junction outside is horribly congested.

Teignmouth does indeed have a reputation. I've heard of fights at the station involving 50+ people armed with bats and other clubs.

Drugs are also a big problem in the coastal resorts

Have to say Birmingham New Street as well for the same reasons that TheExmoorBeast said.

Wakefield Kirkgate is probably the worst station in the UK .... No facilities, buildings look like ruins, and you don't want to hang around there if you can help it - especially at night!

I don't have the paperwork to hand but I'm sure some stations can have bins, I know for a fact that all FCC stations on the GN has them, I'm not sure on Cambridge or Ely but I know Kings Cross and Peterborough certainly doesn't have any bins.

The bins in question have to follow TranSec guidelines with a loop bracket being used as well as see though bags.

It's only the 158s 'from the West' that turn Portsmouth Harbour crappy, I think you'll find. The local version of the 158 has retention tanks, so the obvious solution is to ban FGW...

Put all these reasons together, and you get Dalmarnock.

I think it describes Glasgow in general... but isn't Dalmarnock to benefit from multi-million £££'s for the Commonwealth Games in 2014. New front, Booking Office and everything. Or am I thinking of somewhere else???

It definetly doesn't describe Glasgow in general. Some of the stations in Glasgow look like they're well looked after.

As for Dalmarnock's refurb, yes it is happening. But for now it gets my vote as the worst station.

As for crap stations, I suppose I could say the famous Reddish South, as if you miss the one train a week, you're in for quite a bit of a wait. By the looks of the photo on Wikipedia there's not even a rain shelter there and if I'm not mistaken the lights have also been removed from the poles. Good job the train calls during daylight hours!

Wasn't just talking about the stations - some are well looked after, but the actual place could do with the same treatment...

Birmingham New Street, Euston, Peterborough are all pretty abysmal.

London Bridge, Fenchurch Street, Clapham Junction, West Croydon and Stratford are all stations I don't like using but don't really "hate" per sé.

Best station is probably somewhere nice and simple like Brighton.

Yes, I think even on Merseyrail none of the fully underground stations can have bins. The bins that are built into the '70s wall fittings are just covered over with metal plating, preventing their use.

Someone mentioned London Bridge as a crap station, I was almost going to say the same. It's got an impressively efficient throughput but it's really is not up to the standards of the other London Terminals. There's just something a bit shabby about the place I feel. But at least the whole place is apprently getting revamped at some point.

I definately agree about Wakefield Kirkgate.
I wouldn't like to have to use any part of that station at night or at any time when its not busy. The whole area around it, the entrance, subway and platforms just seem derelict.
The fact that it is such a large station makes the the dereliction appear even worse than it does at smaller unstaffed stations. Also, although its not the main station in Wakefield, it does have some important rail services serving it, and wakefield is a major West Yorkshire city.

My vote goes to Wakefield Kirkgate, which is a complete and utter dump with rats, vagrants, druggies, and general ne'er do wells at all times of day and night.

On a related matter I have been informed that the public lavatories at Manchester Victoria have now been closed due to repeated vandalism, assaults, druggies and general nastiness. Perhaps Man Vic takes the award as the largest station without public facilities??

London Bridge is fine - until you get out of the splendid LB&SC trainshed. It's a shame that they can't replace some of the viaduct under the through platforms with a large mezzanine concourse. This would be difficult, but if LB could cope with just four through platforms for a while eg by diverting some to Blackfriars when it gets its bays back, you could close and rebuild 5 and 6, and at the same time build another island platform between there and the terminal platforms, then when these have been completed, you could switch all the traffic to 5 - 8 and rebuild 1 - 4. You would at least end up with an extremely large circulating area which could be kitted out more or less at leisure.

By the way, I'm in no way an engineer so whether any of this is remotely possible is pure speculation
