Hi there, would anybody know what allocations shall be running Thursday?
I'll keep saying it.
Pick a nice, warm spot and wait to see what comes along.
The 196s aren't particularly fond of the cold weather we're experiencing currently. Added to the ongoing, random, issues that are occurring and it really is pot luck as to if and what runs.

197011 taking about 4 hours for a roughly 2 hour round trip, utter debacle. Not sure what was wrong.
Oh thanks!

Looks like I have got a day of sitting around at Telford central though I might move up to Shrewsbury as I can spot a bigger variety of trains!

Personally, I'd get to Shrewsbury. You'll get your spotting in and be more likely to board a 196 as it's a terminating/starting station.
Plus, you're not in telford.

Good luck with the 196 hunting. This spate of cold weather, according to my sources up there, really showed the 196s temperamentalness to the fore. Apparently batteries refused to pick up and provide power, and the computer that powers the train refused to switch on, turn on heaters or allow anything beyond basic turning on and limp mode. Ally that with a slew of points failures for the DMU depots at Tyseley and Shrewsbury and the Shrewsbury line Thursday was paralysed.

A lot of the problems are due to insufficient thermal shielding. Most of the electrics for doors and power couplings are exposed to the processes of freezing, thawing, condensing and then refreezing.
I'm not an electrician, but even my tiny mind knows water and electric aren't be too friendly...

I took this advice, sat in the buffet on Wolves waiting for a Shrewsbury service to rock up, what rolls in..... 170505 and 506. We retired to the Great Western for a beer

I really, really wish that I could expound my inner thoughts on the state of affairs. Because this lack of shielding, and exposure of delicates, tells you a lot about their construction.

Hmmmm ..... it was not that cold. I wonder what the lowest design specification temperature was ? IMO -12 degC would be reasonable.

It was -7celsius at least two mornings in a row at Abbey Foregate.
Would you believe that there is little to no thermal shielding unlike on older units?

From reading the reports on this thread and the 197 thread, it seems the 197s are having a much more successful introduction than the 196s from the same manufacturer. Are they very different, or is there some other factor at work?

Class 197s currently out are 2 cars and 196s are 4 cars, so maybe there's more chance of something going wrong when there's double the carriages?

Or just CAF built stock being Crap As Fiddlesticks. Look at the quality of their Urbos units on the Midland Metro...

I think it can probably be boiled down to the routes. The 196s were really thrown into the deep end with Birmingham-Shrewsbury's high passenger numbers, high speeds and very tight turnarounds. Small problems can't really be fixed as conveniently as they might have been on the 197s.

Currently sat on 196107 working the 2J14 BNS - Shrewsbury. Running 40 minutes late due to a problem with the brakes on its inbound working. Is this a common issue with these units?

The 197s were built fully kitted out with Guard Panels in every carriage, compatible for Driver and Guard working. This lead to a compromise on the interior of the train due to project costs.

The 196s were built for DOO, so the money saved went on a better interior- if you get rid of guards, look at the luxury you get! Obviously now, they're being retro fitted for Guard operation, which takes time, money and is causing issues when integrating the electrics and software into the units.
