If they can keep to time is there any reason to switch off eco mode? On the TfW sets although we're currently free to choose whichever mode we feel appropriate, they do drink ad-blue a lot quicker in super-power mode.

I'm no expert but it'd probably be louder and bouncer in Performance mode.
If they don't need to put it in performance mode they probably won't
Might be a nice backup during delay.

Assuming it's like the 197s, all it does is change the speed at which it changes gear. In eco mode it changes through the gears as early as possible, saving fuel at the cost of lower acceleration. You'll notice the engine revving higher before the geae changes when it's in Super Power mode.

yes I had heard that in the past, as I said I'm no expert with it.
I'd've thought putting more power through lower gears would make it louder and more shakey.

Based on the earlier comments about how it effectively brings in gear changes quicker, I guess it might not make a lot of difference. Maybe a matter of seconds off the current time? It would be interesting to compare the times between modes though!

The default mode as listed in the traction manual is not 'eco', but they're currently running in this mode, which I think makes them slower than a class 172. This may be to do with something to do with the transmission, conversely it may not be the case....

It's more to do with the units they're replacing.
A 196 in eco is significantly faster accelerating and decelerating than a 170, shortening overallt journey times. Until the timetable is redrawn to make the most of this extra speed, then the units will stay in the mode to save fuel and keep engine wear to a minimum.

Performance mode is enough to push you back in the seat, especially when opening up full throttle from a stand.

I doubt it.
At Shrewsbury, there's a lot of services moving in the last 20minutes of the hour and then, combined with having to enter Wolverhampton from a branch, rather than mainline, squeezing through is a bit tricky. Better to keep timings as they are to hit your T3 targets, rather than arrival time at destination as it used to be.

Not sure how it is anywhere else.

Slightly off-topic to the current conversation in thread. But any ideas of when the next Hereford diagram is due to be switched to a 196. I know there been a two diagrams (one day and one peak) running for some weeks now?

After 196004 and 196010 have monopolised the service for the last few weeks we welcome 196011 onto the service for the first time. It is working the even hours service from Nuneaton. At this stage I am unsure which unit is working the odd hours service but will take a look later. Thanks as always to Part Time Spotter for the gen.

Edit:: After viewing both units I can confirm there is no sign of 196011. 196010 is still working the even hours from Nuneaton and 172104 is now on the odd hours from Nuneaton.

196006/8 failed at Ledbury with a hot axle box, fault orginally noticed on 5M89 Hereford - Hereford within the Diesel Sidings.
Subsequently left 42 late on 1M89 to be cancelled at Ledbury...

I saw 196004 at Telford Central this morning. First time I've seen a 2 car for a while on the Salop.

I believe I saw it at about half 11 at night at Telford aswell looking fairly empty. From 7am till 7pm the line does ideally need four cars to meet demand, I'm not sure why it was two cars however most likely a fault with another 4 car and it was the nearest thing they could grab onto.

On a different note, does anybody know what's the matter with 196101 as it hasn't ran for about 3 months?

I believe it's being modified with guard's panels in the passenger saloon to enable it to stop at University.

Yep that's correct. 196114 has been moved to Tyseley for testing yesterday.
