The 4 cars are waiting to have door controls fitted in the centre vehicles. Once that happens they will be on the Herefords as well. If one works before fitting the service will not be able to stop at University in the up (towards Birmingham) direction due to the guard not being able to see the full length of the Train due to platform curvature. On all services formed of 4 or 6 cars the guard is supposed to work from the middle, or at least shut the doors from there.
Any idea where this work will be done?

Will the 196s be on any Hereford services from Monday too? I’ve heard a few rumours circulating.
No. The current diagram will be the only one for 2/3 weeks at least. Network Rail still need to do a couple of bits of work past Malvern. Probably/possibly May timetable for Hereford.

Thank you for this information. My friend has just been speaking to someone at Shrub Hill though who seems to think it will be next Saturday for the first full diagram? I presume this information is incorrect but if you could confirm then I would appreciate it.

Last i heard 2/3 weeks but things change. I would be surprised if it’s that soon tho. There is a 196 standby turn showing on the drivers roster for sat but that might be an error as there’s no turn showing Fri pm or Mon am. The turn is there to ensure there is a 196 driver available in case of sickness etc. as the normal spare or standby drivers may not have been trained or had refreshers yet.

Thank you very much, that will clear it up :)

I boarded 196104 today (1540 SHR-BHM 1651), I got on at Smethwick Galton Bridge, and I can confirm, it was a great journey

The more I ride these 196s, the more and more I really like them, still can’t believe these are built by CAF
Spoke to soon, 196103 (which was 10 minutes late arriving) was held at New Street for almost 20 minutes, as there was an issue with the doors not opening

Would make sense if that’s the next diagram to switch over, being the last one using 2x170s.

Fantastic news! I will be up and about for them on Saturday morning, no idea which run yet as it's a 10pm finish at work the night before. Realistically I'll be on the 1039, although I'd like to do the 0639. That might be asking a bit much though with a long day at work too.

Here's hoping it goes ahead :)

I’ve seen both the diagram in question and the 0839 as 170s recently, so it is possible I’d say. Presumably both will switch over quite quickly to free up the 170s.

I'd imagine it will become a priority once the 196s are 'bedded in' on the Hereford route.

On Sunday, I observed the 2100 to Birmingham was a pair of 170s, is that part of a set diagram for the class? That question is aimed at everyone :)
