There seems to be significant disruption on HS1 today (both Eurostar and the Javelin both seem to be in meltdown) with a rumour that a service brought the wires down at Stratford. Does anyone have any more details they can share?

Southeastern say it is due to damage to overhead wires between Stratford and Ebbsfleet.

'The overhead power lines have been damaged on the High Speed line between Ebbsfleet and Stratford, and all lines were blocked earlier.

Response staff are onsite working to fix the damage however we have been advised that the lines between Ebbsfleet and London St Pancras International will have to close from 21:00 tonight for the repair to be completed.' -Southeastern

Seems to be this train stranded near the Stratford Tunnel: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W68835/2022-11-29/detailed
Passengers have now supposedly been evacuated onto a rescue train according to SE on twitter.

Here is the thread.
This is from the Southeastern Twitter
2hrs ago - UPDATE: Passengers onboard the stranded train are now being evacuated to the rescue train. Services are currently suspended from St Pancras. Please use services from London Bridge or Victoria instead. #EbbsfleetInternational
2m ago - UPDATE: #EbbsfleetInternational Journey planners are up to date, we're running 12 carriage trains from St Pancras to Ashford at 17:20, 18:20, 19:20 and 20:20. The line will be closed from 21:00 and engineers will work overnight to reopen for tomorrow morning.

I'm booked on the last train from St Pancras to Canterbury tonight (23:12). Southeastern are telling people to get an earlier train but I am unable to do this, what do I do?

According to SE the line will be closed from 21:00, and the 23:12 is cancelled (see this post from SE)
The High-Speed lines will close by 21:00 tonight, journey planners are updated so please check your last trains.

Nothing direct until the early morning I'm afraid. You could go via Faversham and Ramsgate leaving at 23:55, but you wouldn't be home until 5AM by the looks of things according to Trainsplit.

Would the 2200 NatEx coach from Victoria Coach Station be an option?

If you are unable to take an earlier service, the company will have to transport you using alternative means ie. road transport.

In exceptional circumstances where alternative transport is not possible, they would need to book acommodation for you.

The 22.40 from Charing Cross (22.49 London Bridge) looks as though it has a bus connection from Ashford to Canterbury, departing Ashford at 00.07.

22:10- Victoria to Canterbury East. Does that work?

The 22:10 is quicker and leaves 10 minutes later and they don't need to pay extra money. That is, if they can make this train.

Not before 23:00 really. SE have now said I would be alright getting the 23:44 from Cannon St to Ashford and then asking for assistance there

First dewirement on HS1? Certainly an unusual event anyway.
First I can recall, and I was only just singing its praises when comparing its slender simplicity with the GWR's 'Meccano-on-steroids' set! I have no idea if OHLE design played a part here of course.

Two trains! Ridiculous.
Do things not break? Things happen, 2 separate events is unusual and very unlucky.

OHL coming down may not of been trains fault, second train breaking down which I believe was the repair train.

What would Oscar Wilde have said? To have one train break down may be regarded as a misfortune; to have two looks like carelessness.

Who says the first train broke down? The OHL may be a fault, which admittedly strands the train, but I’ve not read anywhere that the first train caused the issue

Er two “rescue” trains broke down. That’s not a good look.

No. TWO rescue trains broke down. That comes directly from SE.
Do you have a link you can share? The series of Network Rail tweets certainly don't suggest that.

Posted on behalf of our colleagues at Network Rail High Speed (who maintain the high speed railway but aren't on Twitter!): We’re sorry for the disruption experienced by @Se_Railway passengers on High Speed services yesterday and today. /1

At around 0930 on Tuesday, circuit breakers in the power supply to the railway around Ebbsfleet opened, much as they do in your house when there is a problem, and cut the electricity supply to trains. /2

Trains were brought carefully to a stand by the system, and powered down. We closed the breakers and as the trains all powered up we discovered the overhead wire, which carries electricity to trains, had broken in one location. /3

This blocked the London-bound line and stranded a train underneath the broken wire. We worked with @Se_Railway to bring another train alongside and evacuate trapped passengers (see pic)./4

Because we still had one line open between Stratford and Ebbsfleet, we were able to run a much-reduced service on that line. /5

Repairing the overhead wire and moving the train from the “dead” section had to wait until overnight when the next-door line was finally closed and it was safe to access the railway. /6

We did the repairs and moved the train that night, but unfortunately an engineering train doing the work then broke down which took some time to repair and meant a delay to reopening the railway this morning. /7

We’re sorry this all took so long, and on such a usually reliable part of the railway. We are working with @Se_Railway to investigate what went wrong and we hope you will accept our apologies for what were two very difficult days for you. Ends.

Did you manage to get where you needed to be? :)

It appears that there was a bus service to Canterbury but it left (1h) before you managed to get there if you took the 23:44.
