I've never fully understood why we got rid of the 150 fleet. They would be absolutely fine on many of the routes as you've said. But for some reason we sent them down to Wales years ago.

As I say, we do need the capacity. And it probably does make sense for us to have only the three fleets of diesel trains. But 158s on Motherwell-Cumbernauld is just criminal. It's not uncommon for that train to have less than ten passengers on it! If we had put the displaced 158s on Shotts services, it would be totally sensible and, as I've said above, you'd get the same overall result and we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.

(Sorry for pulling this off topic!)

It's just another world. Having read on here about Cardiff - Manchester being run by 150s at the weekend, seeing it's possible to do a round trip from Liverpool > Manchester Victoria > Leeds > Sheffield > Manchester Piccadilly > Liverpool circle by Pacer...

I hate to be a party-pooper but is this actually possible? The Manchester-Warrington-Liverpool stoppers start at Oxford Rd, and the airport ones are run with 15xs, so unless I'm missing something you can't actually get from Picc to OxRd on a Pacer...

(Shockingly - as I'm all too aware - all the rest is perfectly easy to do!)

Just take a Pacer that turns up to go to Blackpool or somewhere, they happen. And it isn't unheard of to have a 142 rock up on the Airport runs.

Oh, I stand corrected
I thought Northern promised to remove them from the airport runs in favour of something nicer but I suppose it was never realistic. And I'd forgotten Blackpool.

Just a quick 'update'.. April 2011:

4 Virgin West Coast services are being diverted between Preston and Carlisle each way over the S&C on Saturday afternoons during next April, as well as also being diverted via Kilmarnock between Carlisle and Glasgow.

Saturday 2nd April 2011:

11:53 Glasgow Central to London Euston arrives 19:14.- 7 hours 21 minutes, compared to 4 hours 32 minutes on the earlier 10:40 departure..

I have to find the time to do that!

I presume that they're Voyagers, or are they going to be Pendo drags, just to make it even better?

I emailed Virgin a couple of weeks back, asking them when the winter timetable's will be published onto their website as I was interested in the S&C diversions.

They simply said timetables towards the end of November, but that engineering work is always subject to alteration etc, so it isn't confirmed by any means.

I'm simply going off what i've found on:

http://jplanner.travelinenortheast.info/jpclient.exe?newQuery=newQuery

I'm guessing all of the services to be Super Voyagers, particularly with the two closures happening at the same time.

I hope Virgin will get some double sets running next year. :) There again, I'm guessing that the 11:53 Glasgow to Euston could be very busy, with it being the last direct Saturday Glasgow to Euston via the North West during April.
