To be fair it's nowhere near as bad as the bloody Olympics, quite possibly the most over-hyped sporting event going.

I think the reason that the Olympic Games are so popular is because there's something for just about anyone, especially now that there are several events broadcast simultaneously via the red button. Whereas football, tennis, rugby, cricket etc. really only appeal to one fan base, there's something in the olympics for fans of swimming, athletics, football, hockey, etc...

Good luck to Andy Murray, the number four seed, who plays Daniel Gimeno-Traver (currently ranked 59th in the world) on Centre Court at the end of today.

Good luck also goes out to the other Brits playing today:
  • Katie O'Brien (ranked 211) takes on Kimiko-Date Krumm (ranked 57) on Number 3 Court at 12 noon.
  • Naomi Broady (ranked 284) faces fellow Brit Anne Keothavong (ranked 110) in the last match on Court 12.
  • Daniel Cox (ranked 272) plays against Sergiy Stakhovsky (ranked 67) in the third match on Court 14

All rankings listed are current world rankings for singles. At least we're guaranteed at least one player through to the second round for a change

PS; If and when Murray loses, can you English be consistent with his nationality? He's "British" when he wins a match, but mysteriously reverts to "Scottish" on losing. Don't think we haven't noticed... :x

Looking at the 1st round draw for the mens singles, I noticed a match that brought back memories of the 2010 mens singles. Nicholas Mahut has been drawn to play John Isner.

In the 2010 tournement when they played against each other, they set the record for the number of games in a singles match.

I don't know about you lot but I can't stand Wimbledon. The thing that REALLY gets up my nose about it is that the BBC literally rams it down your throat by broadcasting it on BBC1, BBC2 and Radio 5 live all day without any alternative choice. Tennis is a rubish game in the first place, same old people winning - playing tournament after tournament week-in and week-out. YAWN!

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we are blessed with something called a 'remote control'.

If I don't like something, I can switch it off or switch over. That way, I never feel as if a programme is being 'literally rammed down my throat'.

Since the line through Southfields sometimes sees ECS workings going through it (like the pair of VEPs that surprised the life out of me first time I was there :) ) would it be possible to run a few extras in the gap between District Line services? Perhaps Waterloo International-Southfields-Wimbledon.

Kimiko Date-Krumm defeated Katie O'Brien 6-0 7-5. No surprises there; Date-Krumm is the better player on paper.

(Don't worry; I'll only report the British matches!)

You seem to be missing my point about saturation coverage.

Regardless, you still have at least one of BBC 1 or BBC 2 to watch, and everything else thereafter, on the radio, all you have to do is avoid 5LIVE and SPORTS XTRA.

Even when Andy Murray changes from British Superstar to Scottish loser? ;)
FWIW that annoys me too and many people I know south of the Border.

The problem with Wimbledon is that although you can turn it off you cannot replace it with anything else such as Shaun the Sheep

lol Why do they have to put it on 5live when it has its own sports station? I love listening to debate and chat when i'm working and can't do so during these two weeks. It also annoys me when they have golf on Radio 5 live for hours on end! Golf on radio for crying out loud! lol Keep the sports to their own little bit and leave the current affairs and chat alone. There really is no excuse for it :)

For coverage of two matches occurring simultaneously. Using 5Live and Sports Extra means you can pick a match and listen to it. They do it all the time for football matches

SPORTS XTRA is only used about 25% of the time anyway, for most of the week and at nights it just repeats what it is going to broadcast. As far as I'm concerned, 5LIVE is the BBC's sports channel, with a bit of debate and current affairs etc.

I concur, I've always seen 5 live as a sport station that happens to broadcast debates et al when there is no sport on

FWIW the Scot is losing at the moment ;)

<( Well, the Brit lost the first set, but came back to win in four sets for Scotland  See what it's like? ;)

A lot of the play got cancelled today with the rain, so there's a lot to catch up on tomorrow and they're running quite a bit behind. Obviously, in the last few years the cover on Centre Court has helped matters a lot, ensuring that play continues. For the Brits today:
  • Andy Murray beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0
  • Kimiko Date-Krumm beat Katie O'Brien 6-0, 7-5

The following matches were suspended due to the weather:
  • Sergiy Stakhovsky vs Daniel Cox; 6-2, 0-1 - due to continue tomorrow as the second match on Court 14
  • Naomi Broady vs Anne Keothavong; First Match on Court 12 tomorrow

The following matches are scheduled for tomorrow:
  • James Ward (a relative unknown who reached the Semi-Finals at Queen's) vs Michael Llodra (19); Third Match on Number 2 Court
  • Mathilde Johansson vs Heather Watson (GBR); Last match on Number 3 Court
  • Florian Mayer (20) vs Daniel Evans (GBR); Third Match on Court 5
  • Elena Baltacha (GBR) vs Mona Barthel; Third Match on Court 12
  • Klara Zakopalova (GBR) vs Emily Webley-Smith; Final Match on Court 14
  • Angelique Kerber vs Laura Robson (GBR); TBA, but not before 17:00
It's a very tight schedule for tomorrow, with most courts seeing five matches, and that's not accounting for the six matches TBC. I reckon it's unlikely that they'll complete the first round of the singles tomorrow, especially as there may be some more rain (although, thankfully, not too much).

They have a free Middle Sunday, don't they? Isn't that a free day for catch-up if need be?

Yes, so if there's only minimal delays over the next few days, then things would be back in schedule by Week 2. Sadly, there looks to be significant rainfall due on Wednesday and Friday, so that could really knock it out. Middle Sunday's great for the fans, because they generally have cheap tickets available for all courts at short notice. They've only ever done it three times apparently - 1991, 1997 and 2004. Additionally, they can extend it at the other end. There have been finals played on the Monday before (although these will be a rarity now with the cover on Centre Court). I don't know if it's ever gone any further than that, and I doubt that we'll be testing that theory this year.

With the 5 matches in a day, I honestly think they'll struggle to get very far tomorrow if there's any more than a short rain delay. Some of them even have 3 mens matches booked, which could easily extend to 5 set matches.

Totally agree.

This is an individual who made it crystal clear that he supports ANYONE other than England.

In recognition of that the English should thus support anyone who plays against him and stop treating him as a true "Brit". He ain't. First, foremost and always, he will be Scottish and opposed to anything English - his own words by the way.

I note that Isner vs Mahut is scheduled 4 of 5 on court 3. Let's hope it doesn't go on as long as last time.

I think its fairly open this year - Nadal is chronically injured, Federer is losing his way, Djokovic has off days, and hass breathing problems, all Murray has to do is keep himself together and concentrate...

I think that is it quite some time since Murray won as many consecutive games as he did in his last match.....won the last two sets 6-0 6-0!!
