It's not exactly compulsory to watch it. Even homes with the basic range of digital channels, ie., Freeview, have a few other channels to choose from, even if you do feel compelled to stare at the box during daytimes rather than doing something useful or interesting.
That said, I can never understand why the BBC keeps switching big or lengthy sporting events back and forth from BBC1 to BBC2, often with disregard to what is shown in listings magazines. That really IS annoying.
When the digital switch-over is complete, perhaps the corporation should be persuaded to dump all the utter dross on BBC3 and use a single channel for as much of the sport as possible. Yes, I know there's issues about bandwidth and sharing with children's channels but they surely cannot be beyond a reasonable solution?
