Hi .just would like to know what trains crossrail will be operating and if these types of trains will be run through out the route or just in places

The class 345s are being procured specifically for the line and owing to the Platform Edge Doors in the underground part of the line, are the only trains that are compatible with the stations. These trains will be running between Shenfield/Abbey Wood and Reading, (along with various shorter journeys between those points) to provide a full metro/suburban service.

Yes, the Class 345 Aventra is on order. It will be a unanimous fleet, just like on LU lines.

In the meantime, while TfL is responsible for Shenfield Metro and [from 2017] Heathrow Connect, existing stock will continue in use, with 7-car Class 345 units being introduced on existing routes until launch of full through service.

Crossrail will have a fleet of 65 9-car, 200m long, Class 345. These will be the only trains Crossrail has. They'll run throughout the Crossrail route. Wikipedia has good information on ths
Excuse my ignorance here but if Crossrail has only a fleet of 65 class 345s then how are they going to be able to run a service from the east to the west with just 65 trains? I would have thought they would be using a lot more trains.

Bear in mind that, like with the Thameslink Class 700, these are full-length gangway units which will not couple in service.

They are, it has gone up to 66 trains to cope with running to Reading.

While Shenfield to Reading is the longest run, there are a lot of shorter journeys as well. I don't think they simply guessed at the number of trains needed, someone will have done some homework :)

Unanimous? Well at least they won't argue with each other like Henry and Gordon in Thomas the Tank Engine.

Ubiquitous perhaps was the posh word you were looking for ;)

Yes a rough equivalence would be to use 130 5 carriage class 377's instead.

I'm surprised by that tbh as thought any service running through East to west would have loads of trains on the go at any one point .crossraill have recently recruited 400 drivers so what are they going to do ? Take turns in driving one of the 65 trains

So do you think drivers will be working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week with no holidays then?

I'm not sure I understand you? You're accusing those of us that have seen the press releases etc of lieing about the number of trainsets needed? What do we have to gain?

Can we see your maths that proves us wrong?

It won't be 12 per hour on all sections. I belive Reading gets 2 per hour. They will have calculated how many they need for the peak service plus maintenance spares and that is 66.

I can't find the actual details for how many trains are expected in service at each peak period, but a quick calculation suggest between 52 and 55 train sets are needed during each peak period, 35 or so for the 24 trains per hour through the core between Paddington and Whitechapel, then splitting to Shenfield and Abbey Wood, with another 20 sets needed for the 10 trains per hour on the GWML to Heathrow and onto West Drayton, Maidenhead and Reading.

Best you don't apply for a diagramming job in the near future ;)

There will also be some units required for the peak Great Eastern electric line services that don't go down the tunnel.

Well good luck with that.

The underground publish their really detailed working timetables on the TfL website. Just put working timetable in the search box. They include all the depot working which will tell you how many trains they use.

That will keep you busy, tell us the answer when you've worked it out :)

Well if you actually looked at the Crossrail site closely you would see that over half the services only run to Paddington and that Paddington - Abbey Wood is only a 29min Journey and Paddington - Romford is only a 37min Journey and that the longest journey is 88mins which has already been pointed out is only 2 trains per hour, and 4 trains per hour to the Airport. Compare that with Thameslink with a 2.5hour journey time between Bedford and Brighton and you can see why nearly twice as many trains have been ordered for Thameslink.

If your going to be doing the diagramming then yes they are probably going to have to buy more trains:lol:

The posting of this thread really explains to me why it's such hard work coping with my diagrams.

Do we know who is going to be doing the voice over on the class 345's at all please and when it comes to the Crossrail stations under London, I am presuming that 'Mind the Doors' will be used when the doors of the class 345's are closing?

No. Probably the same person who did the 2009TS and S stock PAs.

Highly unlikely that they would use something as complicated as 'Mind the doors' - when you can communicate the same message without language with some kind of beeper.

There is both a hustle alarm, and "Please stand clear of the closing doors" on LU some stock.

If the stock has to meet mainline group standards it'll presumably get what those standards require, not get what LU do. Even the newest LU stock such as S7 and S8 operates with dispensations against RVAR concerning door alarms.

Or possibly "unique"?
