Why white/silver liveries?

London buses all have standard exterior liveries but differing interiors based on operator. Indeed, the interior is just about the only way they can put their stamp on it.

The DFT is moving towards standardisation of interiors for each separate franchise. Not necessarily the same type of seats, etc but all the colours should match. This is happening at Scotrail and TPE and also Northern as well with unit refurbishment.

At TPE by 2019 every train will have the same colour scheme inside and out. Only the 185s will have different seats to the other 3 TPE fleets but the colours will be the same.

It really isn't about leases. BAs aircraft (and I assume the other majors) are mostly mortgaged not leased so it's not even a factor. That's why they are generally kept until retirement.

Other airlines exist, and have different business models. You assume incorrectly about majors owning their fleets, some of the largest aren't owned but are leased instead. There's a reason why GECAS own nearly 2000 aircraft, closely followed by ILFC with going on 1500.

No gain in blue either, it's the same basic livery since Utopia in the late 90s.

BA existed prior to the 1990s. Their livery has gained and lost blue over the years but it's gained quite a bit compared to the immediate post BOAC days when it was basically just along the window line.

Taking BA, AF and LH for example, the vast majority of their fleets will serve its full life with the airline

White is popular because it's the base colour for many liveries, making an aircraft easier to sell or lease between carriers. Any new paint job is usually quicker.

The problem with white is that whilst it looks striking and attractive to begin with, it soon ends up like this:

The state of that is down to ATW, not the white in the livery, the 175's in Arriva's current livery look just as dirty.

Agreed. That said, it is strange that these, supposedly the flagship fleet of ATW, haven't got repainted into the new Welsh Gov't scheme (though I'm sure there's scores of pages explaining why!)

For exactly the same reason that airlines are all tending to 'Eurowhite' with a splash of colour - it's easier to place the asset with a new lease if it doesn't have to be completely repainted.

An additional reason I've heard about Eurowhite airline liveries is that white paint is "lighter" than other pigments and in the quantities used it can make a real difference to fuel consumption.

Yeah very true. Easyjet have pursued lightweight paints to minimise drag, and thus fuel consumption, including their new 'orange centric' livery.

There are. The Franchise is coming to an end next year so will have to wait until new holders known and what their brand will be. ATW don't want to go the expense when it may only be temporary.

Also GWRs 153305 (Casper) in white which has just been repainted as it's future uncertain.

That wasn't their colour scheme though.
The first BA scheme was the Negus one from 1973, rather than the ragbag collection of BEA/BOAC/Cambrian etc. rebrands.

Here's a history. There's a lot less blue now than Landor or Negus.

That's correct, though it's not quite the same as the Borismaster moquette (it doesn't have the contour line effect):
