High backed seats on the 158s not present on the Mk3

The FGW HST fleet that ScotRail will receive are fitted with the same seats currently being installed in the scenic Class 158 units.

Not the same thing. Travel on a ship is different in the sense your journey isnt constrained to a little seat or the vestibules. Your free to get up and move around as you please. Yes you can pay for access to "the club class" lounge if you fancy it. There isnt even that option on WHL services. You will never hear passengers at sea especially on UK ferries as first or second class.

Can all passengers gain access to the lounge?
No. They must pay a higher fare. Sounds suspiciously like a higher level of service, or class, to me.

While operators may not call it first or standard, there is a difference.
Perhaps, like the refurbished trains, you've never used the service to know what the difference is.

Electrification is definitely the way foward especially for the Oban section which is the gateway to the islands. An HST would make a great scenic train. Mk3 ride, good views along the coach, drop down windows for the Glenfinnan viaduct, no underfloor engines, buffet cars a plenty, lots of luggage space in the power cars. At least ScR had the foresight to introduce them on the central belt Aberdeen/Inverness run.

Drop down windows on HSTs? Not the ones ScotRail is getting. I believe they are going to be Chilternised. That will remove the drop lights. Also 2x power cars is a waste. 2 x passenger cars could be used in their place. Also 180s or 175s more suitable units? Do they get the Sprinter speed differentials?

HSTs on ScotRail is a temporary measure because that is what is available quickly. They will be replaced.

158s are the probably the best sub 100MPH diesel multiple unit on the railway today. They had their teething problems, but have settled down to be reliable, comfortable units.

They are absolutely ideal on the WHL. Probably the best train in terms of the comfort/cost compromise for the job.

For Aberdeen/Inverness service maybe. For a Scenic HST there are other possibilities.
