Whitland-Pembroke Dock engineering work

The line from Whitland to Pembroke Dock will be closed for five days from Monday 24 April for engineering works.

Does anyone know the nature and extent of these works, please?

I'm ruling out electrification...

That'll be the worksite mileage, rather than the actual renewal mileage. Being a blockade it could be a number of sites

By the way, absolutely no signs at Tenby station this morning to advise those on the station - disgruntled passengers were not happy, particularly with the rail replacement bus to Whitland also departing 20 minutes before the train usually would.

Why couldn't ATW or Network Rail have put at least one poster up at the station?

That was me! And since then, they've Tweeted twice (no response though from Network Rail in Wales.)

The Tenby Observer and Western Telegraph websites are also featuring the closure, and the local Tourist Office has been informed, so I've been a busy bee.

I popped in to the station this afternoon: still no posters up, nothing of any use on the electronic displays on the platforms, and two passengers sitting glumly on the steps of the bridge waiting for a further hour, having been incorrectly sent to the town centre bus stop instead of waiting in the station car park for the bus.

Later on, a 56 seater rail replacement coach (empty) bombed up my road heading for the station. I would imagine that 30 seconds later, when attempting to turn out of my road, he would have realised why coaches never use this road...

All in all, an object lesson in how not to handle an engineering blockade...

One gets the impression that ATW assumes everybody has Computer access and Phone Apps whilst, at the same time, not being helpful to people who are not computer literate or some elderly people who may struggle with certain technology. Even on Twitter, and when the answer could be a direct yes or no, you would be quoted a link and sometimes the information can be quite a lengthy process (that's if it's the correct link in the first place) to find. The TOC gives the impression that you should electronically check out your journey prior to each occasion you intend to travel. I had a set to some years ago when, on reading Station posters regarding Engineering work on the Cardiff Valleys network and which more or less summarised details affecting some of the routes. There was no mention on the Poster that the Penarth service would be reduced from quarter to half hourly during the day. The reply I got was that the information was all there and could be found by going on line or other info systems and that a person should check their journey before setting out. I assume from that statement, that somebody who travels from Penarth to Cardiff to work should do this and check each day.

I notice that the Down Pembroke Dock trains which are terminating at Whitland are, after arrival at Whitland, running empty to Clarbeston Rd and back into the Up platform to return to Carmarthen direction. On examining RTT would appear to be merely to get out of the way of trains going to and from Milford Haven.

Silcox rarely provided the bus replacements when they were in business, Arriva using a number of even smaller operators from the Carmarthen area instead.

But yesterday's coach was plain white with no visible markings.

I thought that they would have been laying long welded track on concrete sleepers? Surely, this work should have been done in winter - not now - going into the tourist season?

Tenby station is a disgrace for the major resort in Pembrokeshire. Part of it has been hired out to some sort of removal company. You would think that perhaps it could have become a National Park Office whereby staff could deal with queries and sell tickets?
