Morning all,

Hoping you guys can help with expanding the info I already have.

Whitby station has had a variety of traction over the years. The mainstay of the passenger services under BR were cl.101s, 142s, 143s, 144s (?) and in more modern times I've seen cl.156s but maybe others?

If anyone can help with updating the list below with approx. years, types of services and liveries I'd be grateful.

DMU:
Class 101.
Class 104 (?).
Class 105 (1975)
Class 108.
Class 142.
Class 143.
Class 144 (?)
Class 150 (I think).
Class 153.
Class 156.
Class 158 (?).

Locos:
Class 43 (HST) on a rail tour.
Class 40 (Railtour)
Class 55 (Railtour)
Class 66 (Engineers)
Class 70 (2020 on a Engineers trains).
Class 25 (NYMR).
Class 20 (NYMR).
Class 37 (NYMR & BR Thornaby locos on freight in the early 80s)
Class 31 (NYMR & Charters)

Many thanks in advance

I've been on 158's in service on the route. Still mainly 156's though.

Can't see a time when a 150 would have visited if I'm honest.
Although I suspect that the 950 has been down there.

A voyager went to the NYMR in 2002/3 and I'm not sure if it got as far as Whitby or just as far as Grosmont (of course the NYMR didn't run to Whitby then)

EE Type 4s (class 40) worked to from Whitby in passenger service see discussion here about the last day of York-Whitby via Pickering.

I don't know about excursion traffic to Whitby in the 1960s but BR Type 2s (class 24), BRCW Type 2s (class 27) and EE Type 3s (class 37) are all possibilities, in addition to EE Type 4s.

37049 worked a Duxford to Whitby charter in 1984 and 33030 and 33116 worked a railtour to Whitby in 1997. Both of these are on Six Bells Junction.

Can't remember in which book I saw the photos, but back in the mid-1960s (after the 1965 closure of the Pickering line) Whitby Town Football Club reached the final of whichever league they were in at the time and three football specials were run - all hauled by class 40s - from Whitby to Wembley via Middlesbrough, running round at Battersby.

There is also a photo on Flickr (Sorry, can't do a link) of 40 131 at the bufferstops at Whitby after arrival on an Adex from Wellington - having worked from Birmingham New Street - on Wednesday 20th July 1983. The 40 was apparently chosen because - in the days before twin tank 47s - its fuel capacity was just adequate for the return journey from/to Brum. Haulage bashers on the train were in for an extra treat, as the return leg from New Street to Wellington was worked by Motherwell Depot's 37 030 - Having had a common Bescot 47 on the outward.

I had a 47 there and back on an ADEX from the West Midlands in the early to mid 80s and they have been back there fairly recently on railtours.

31s and 37s went there on passenger during the Pacer shortage of 1987-1988.

The vice-Pacer trains were generally only around 3 or 4 coaches - I even travelled on one from Newcastle to Sunderland that had two.

Also allocated to Whitby depot in the BR era were:
Class A6 4-6-2T
Glass G5 0-4-4T
J24, J25, J27, J39 0-6-0.

I imagine Class J21 0-6-0 may also have worked to Whitby when based at Malton depot.

If their route availability permitted, other feasible visitors were D20 & D49 4-4-0s and B16 4-6-0s.
Also the "last day" (Whitby Moors) railtour was worke by K1 and K4 2-6-0s.

Add 1001 the Hastings thumper. It was hired to work the line around 24 years ago? Class 104 certainly worked in the late '80s or '90s from Darlington, still with the Welsh dragon logo on the front

Various mainline registered locos have visited Whitby during NYMR diesel galas. I've had 47580 there myself, no doubt there would have been others.

Class 31s also appeared on passenger trains to/from Middlesbrough in the 1980s.

You can also add BR 4MT 2-6-0, Ivatt 2-6-2T and Stanier 2-cyl 2-6-4T to the BR era steam list - the former infrequently, & on Scarborough services from the Tees/Wear area, the latter as a one-off, as far as we know, as a pilot engine on a "Scenic Excursion", running in a scheduled path. She was a Malton engine; Malton providing the pilot loco for the Malton Whitby (break) - Scarborough (break) - Malton sections of such trips. The little Ivatts were also used on such pilot services.

Also seen once, as far as known, on these services, were a Transpennine DMU (later class 124), seen running without its buffet car, a Calder Valley (later Class 110) set and an EE Type 4 (later Class 40), D352. This last one was the only time that a main line diesel loco is known to have traversed the whole Scarborough & Whitby line.

For a period in the 00’s a 3-car 144 was standard traction on the branch to provide enough capacity for the school trains, possibly the only time and place this class worked in service in the North East. I believe it came up from Neville Hill as ECS Sunday night or early Monday morning, and returned Friday night.

In the mid-1980s, when the 144s were brand new, they were diagrammed to work an early evening Leeds-York-Darlington stopper - returning later in the evening. It was on that service that I had my first ever journey on a 144. At that time they were all still two car units.

Partly correct.
The 40 was indeed specifically diagrammed for the extended fuel range, as otherwise a loco change en route or a trip back to Thornaby for refuelling would have been necessary. The 40 worked throughout from Wellington on the outward trip, not from New Street as stated. Thanks to some friends "in the know" the fact that this train was going to be a 40 and that a 47 could not substitute for it became known to some of the more hardcore 40 bashers, so a decent turnout was assured.
My move was the 2234 York - Shrewsbury throughout with a 47 for another 47 to Wellington to pick up the 40 from there. It was worth the effort.

Thanks for that, that’s interesting but just little bit before my time.

I have had 101, 142,143,144, 153 and 156 units to Whitby. I have had 31 + coaches in BR service and NYMR service

was it? I had it in use on the Great Yarmouth branch when I lived down that way.

I am also sure I saw 141 units on that service to. I wonder if a 141 made it to Whitby?

May have done....but I doubt that Darlington drivers and Middlesbrough guards would have signed them. They were different to the other 14x classes in several respects.

I was a bit bored and did not have the time to go do any modelling so I searched on Flickr for “DMU Whitby“. A lot of 156s photos have come up but there are some nice ones of Whitby as it was before the bay platforms were turned into the booze aisle (I know this as a couple of purchases were made whilst there in August) in Co-op.

I found the above link when falling into a Whitby station shaped picture wormhole! I wonder if an 08 has hauled a train on part of that line
