Mallard and Evening Star are the obvious choices, so I'm opting for one a bit less so.

Caledonian Railway's no. 123 is one loco that does not deserve to be stuck in a museum, cold and far from the days of fire and steam. She's a true Scot, built in Glasgow and working between Lockerbie and Edinburgh for a good portion of her life before being withdrawn by the LMS as no. 14010 in 1935 and subsequently restored by BR to Caledonian Blue and no. 123 once again to run special trains in 1959, before being handed over to the Glasgow Museum of Transport in 1966. Cold ever since. What a disgrace.

A fellow Scot, NBR's Glen Douglas, who was also restored in 1959 to her NB condition, returned to steam in 1992 after being in the Transport Museum since 1966. So why can't 123 see steam once more?

It's probably been said, but the Hymek on display at the West Somerset R'Way.

Given that the Bury Hydraulic Group have acquired two good condition power units (meaning 7076 is back in traffic early), there is a real possibility of co-operation between the two owning groups which may see 7018 back sooner than originally thought.
18's original power unit needs a huge amount of work to return to service - 76's old one may not need so much. There are already close links between the two groups, so fingers crossed 18 will leave her hidey-hole at Williton and pull trains again sometime in the next two years or so.

I'd really really like to see D1048 back, that would be great, as would 46035. I've heard a whisper that a buyer may be interested in the 46 so there is a chance that she will be repaired and get back out where she belongs on the mainline.

Love to see 76 020 or 76039 working on the Mainline someday.
That's some pretty fanciful and ambitious aspirations there, given that 76039 is nothing more than a disembodied cab and that the only section of "main line" that 76020 would be able to operate over would be the Sunderland to Pelaw section of the Tyne and Wear Metro (And by extension, the rest of the 1.5kV operated TW Metro system, but that doesn't count as main line), but I suppose we all can dream. :D

It'd be quite a sight to behold, and I certainly wouldn't be complaining as it would pass right by my old house in Sunderland! Getting one of the 77s fired up as well would be quite something.

I'd like to preserved EMUs back on the mainline, but 4CEP 7105 in particular.

Theres not many around, and as mentioned in previous threads surely an MLV on each end (both available from the EKR, along with the CEP) would get around this Mk1 safety thingy.

If anyone know better about the Mk1 safety please correct me. :)

Don't know if it fits here really, but if it came to Fantasy Island I would have stopped D818 Glory getting the gas axe and put her back in running order, but with NBL engines and Voith transmissions as a Class 43, because there is a machine sadly missing from today's preserved hydraulic scene.

Ho-hum, never going to happen, etc., etc.

Sorry to be pedantic but the Hylton branch is part of Network Rail so it is technically part of the "main line". Historically the Sunderland-Hylton-Penshaw line was as much a main line as Sunderland-Newcastle as it was RA9 and could handle any type of train.Everything from A4's to Deltics ran there.

Got to be class 71 E5001 back on the juice, and the Bluebell's Adams Radial.

And dare I say Ffestiniog's 'Princess' and 'Livingston Thompson'..

Can't say I can blame you there!

For me, I would love to see the likes of:
-'Blue Peter'; simply down to the prospect of seeing an A1/2/3/4 lineup in action.
-LSWR Adams Radial No 488; I'd heard so much about this engine when I was growing up, but never had the chance to witness it running.
-'Duchess Of Hamilton'; a streamlined Coronation, anyone? :D
-'Green Arrow'; the monoblock casting may be knackered. But still, this engine has been regarded by many (drivers especially) to be one of the finest of Gresley's designs.
-'Mallard'; if only briefly, it would be great to see her running anyday!

There are others, naturally. But these are the ones which spring immediately to mind.

Aren't there plans to revive the prototype HST power car in hand at the moment?

I'd vote for City of Birmingham and 84001 too.
