Not sure how you would ever get Newcastle Under Lyme and Hanley to work. Kenilworth is well progressed. West Bromwich won't ever come back to heavy rail from the tram. Willenhall is about the only feasible one there.

Scrap HS2 we don't want more countryside built over. London Marylebone to Manchester Central. Turf out Great central railway at Loughborough knock down crappy Victoria shopping centre in Nottingham, bulldoze Gmex in Manchester.
Rebuild all the great stations.

HS2 would be somewhat cheaper than that. And quicker!

HS2 is basically Great Central Railway 2.0. plus a spur linking it to the LNW route at Lichfield.

Thinking about it the GCR missed a trick by going through Rugby rather than going a few miles west with a branch to Birmingham before heading off to Sheffield

Apparently the new Euston will have a statue of a famous person to complement Betjeman at St Pancras. Apparentky it will be Watkin pointing in the direction of Sheffield and laughing, with the words "I told you so" inscribed.

HS2 is being built to carry coal from South Yorkshire and fish from Grimsby to London?

The GCR could hardly 'head' to Sheffield as that is where it started (although the London extension actually started at Annesley connecting into the 1892 'Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire extension lines')

One of the problems with the GC is that it didn't go through many places between Leicester and London. Although it was a much better laid-out line than the Midland's slow and twisty route, the latter went through more sizeable towns and was quadrupled for quite a north of London, thus making it easier for the heavy freight traffic that it took even into the Beeching years. The GC also did not link to many other routes; for example, it merely crossed at Rugby with no connection or joint station with the London-Birmingham route.
