The line between Peterborough and Doncaster via Lincoln is an embarrassment for Network Rail. Since the £280m upgrade the line has been and still is failing the general public who use/ cross the line and the train/freight operators in regards to the regular failures of the infrastructure.

As a write this, there are issues in the Littleworth area.

The crossing down times have been well documented by the local press in Spalding with some of the blame aimed at the axle counters.

The latest problem came after a £280 million upgrade of the Great Northern Great Eastern Line between Doncaster and Peterborough was completed last November.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We apologise for the disruption in the Spalding area which was caused by an ongoing problem with a set of points on the track.
“When a fault is detected, the level crossing barriers ‘fail safe’, meaning the barriers are dropped to protect the public.”

So I ask the question, when will NR sort out the issues. Could they get rid of the axle counters for another system which would work alongside the OD crossings.

I would be very surprised if this had anything to do with axle counters. Much more likely an issue with the crossing itself.

Indeed. A crossing on one of my routes was converted to OD and in practice had to be calibrated in-situ for each "unusual" situation. So first time it "saw" snow it detected it as an obstruction. Likewise fog (heavy mist actually). The tech is a great idea but as Captain Deltic would say, "the devil is in the detail."

At the same time it also failed at Sleaford North. When it all works it's fine but the track is very rough in parts and the less said about the signalling equipment the better. It's pretty much a daily occurrence for something to crap out somewhere and the OD crossings you can do bugger all with in many circumstances until someone turns up to put them on local control.
