Kato HO SD40 for Xmas!

Spent the last 2 days patching the Algoma Central into my freelance Madison Commercial Railroad reporting marks & weathering :)

No Xmas arrivals for me, but a bit of shopping afterwards and this lot of Maunsells turned up today...

PXL_20260107_124328290.jpg

This means I have enough Maunsells for 3 3-sets in BR(S) Green, one 3-set in Blood and Custard, and a loose blood and custard composite.
They are all suitable for renumbering into sets for my "area". No more Hornby Maunsells... except I wouldn't mind a 4-set perhaps, but those were Restriction 1, and so we're off into kit making (Roxey do them)... :-/ At some point I'll have a layout to run everything on!

This must be the record time since a class 37 has been posted in this thread....
Some of us are trying other ways on him... :D

I’ve finally got my Accurascale Pannier down on the layout. Luckily, it still works as intended despite being thrown over a 6ft fence into my garden and left out in the rain all week as I wasn’t home by Parcelforce. Credit to Rails of Sheffield and Accurascale for the robust packing.

It’s a lovely model!

I had a go at doing a running session video- it’s not as easy as some make it look! Heaven only knows how @Cowley had the patience to do them in N gauge!

It’s really nice. I just watched the video.

You should’ve seen the outtakes. You’ve never heard language like it.

Really good video - and glad to see the snow has cleared in Fort George! Also appreciate some van action - ex-LMS CCT, ex-LNER fish van, ex-LMS 12T(?) - lovely stuff :)

Thanks both! :)

Another acquisition- an Oxford Rail Pilchard wagon. I thought this was really reasonably priced and it’s a very nice model, with good and different weathering on each side.

An arrival in early December was the KR Models 4DD. Having ordered and paid for it in early 2022, it was a long time coming. Detail is fairly basic, but I think it captures the look fairly well.
It’s when it came to running it that problems became apparent. To put it simply, it was a derailing mess! Even the power car on its own would derail. Fault was traced to the coupling mechanisms jamming up and not being able to rotate freely. Loosening the weights and attachment screws inside freed them up a lot, and fairly soon I was able to run a 3DD. One of the intermediate cars however, was still having issues.
This brings me onto the couplings themselves. They are 8 pin connectors (giving the unit a 32 wheel pick up!) but they are very fiddly to connect, and even more so to get the unit on the track without them coming apart. This becomes more frustrating when you are repeatedly taking the unit apart to ‘tinker’ with it to stop the derailing.
Finally this morning, I solved the issue with the remaining coach. The coupling was jamming up on reverse curves. This was solved by filing the ends of the adjacent bogie frame. Now that‘s all solved, I can finally enjoy the model!

Glad you managed to get it working- it's a very striking model, but a bit of a poor do that you've had to do so much fettling for it to work... Though with KR it seems to go with the territory! There's been so many issues with each of their models that I'm hoping they don't announce something I'm likely to want!

It’s a shame really. They got off to a good start with the GT3 and seemed to be turning a corner with the previous release to the 4DD, the Bo-Bo Hunslet. I also have the Leader, which is again a reasonable model as long as the wheels don’t fall off! (which fortunately, mine didn’t)

I got these as (somewhat delayed - best not to ask TBH) Xmas presents - a load of Fox transfers for pre-TOPS vans, which allows me to get on with quite a lot of kits I have, some coupler blocks, and of course, another kit to add to the pile  . This an SR Ling ballast wagon from Chivers - the moulding is excellent BTW - I do fancy a rake of LIng/Tunny/Grampus and something like an ex-SECR Dance Hall converted to Ballast brake on the back.

PXL_20260115_224258052.jpg

I also, unexpectedly, landed up getting some brass etches - these from Worsley Works: he is retiring, and have had my eye on making up a couple of diagram 52 100 Seaters - these were the last two sets of ends, sides and floors he had, so it was frankly now or never... So, those into the long term to do pile then...

Not an acquisition, but I have got my old baseboard out of store in Yorkshire, where it has been for thirty-five years; the board is 4’ x 9” and is, I think, fifty years old. The track, which has been down for nearly forty years, looks dirty but seems undamaged, but one or two bits of ballast have swelled a touch and will need filing down. If the points’ electrics are still functioning, then I should have something running fairly soon, but if not a bit of extra wiring will be needed. Not that I have much to run: the 25 and 26 are probably too long for the headshunt, so it is the 06 or the 08 to shunt the two ferry vans (one at a time as the siding is too short for two) and, when I have fitted a coupling, the brake van.

Latest arrival is the Hornby Tavern Cars. Very nicely detailed and run well. Internal lighting is also good without being too bright. Stayed on a long time after power off as well (stayed on even longer than my Accurascale Mk.2s.)

I don’t have a representation of the Atlantic Coast Express (or other relevant trains for these coaches), so rule 1 has been implemented and they are pictured here running as part of my Dover Newhaven boat train!

Of all the products of Bulleid's fascinating mind, the tavern cars have to be my favourite. It's a very plausible rule one as well - enjoying a tipple in an olde English pub going 60 mph through Tonbridge before boarding a ship to France feels like an experience that could have happened. I hope Hornby do more oddities like these.

It's the first time I've seen somebody run the blood and custard variants alongside similar coaching stock and the colours seem to match quite well. Love the pristine CC2 as well!

Had a Cambrian 25T SR Brake kit arrive, and some exciting bedtime reading in the form of a copy of Rowland's British Railway Wagons (First half million) which was cheap on eBay.

Excellent book. It never gets put back on the shelf, in fact it doesn’t even have a place, because it is always in reach of my chair. One of only two books that have that status. But I am a wagon enthusiast.

The ‘blood’ matches very well. The ‘custard’ is on the lighter side when compared to the Maunsell coaches they are running with, but it’s close enough.
Edit - Just noticed my mistake; it’s a Newhaven boat train, not Dover! You mentioning Tonbridge jogged my memory as the article this formation is loosely based on went down the Brighton Main Line

"All rather frightening with all these different colours". I wonder how Miss Hunter would have coped with all the variety post-privatisation!

Fascinating article though, thank you. It's hard to imagine such prestige at Newhaven now, when all you get is a ferry symbol on a carriage map.

And she ran a confectionary shop, so she should be used to all sorts of colours. Unless this was before 24 April 1949, when sweet rationing came to an end.

Pre March 1950 (20003 was outshopped in black at that point), but long enough after Feb 49 (when British Railways published the new livery details) for both the coaches to be out shopped in CLC and the van in crimson!

Sadly, it appears that, except for a very brief appearance on the Eastern Region when new, they were only ever used on the South Western Division, mostly Waterloo-Exeter Central, but also to Bournemouth West. They seem only to have lasted in the unrebuilt form for a year or two.
