Seeing as it's next to a platform, I'm guessing it's for detaching when the pipes/jumpers are on the offside. Open to being corrected though, not a route I sign.

edit: on closer look, maybe not. There's a pipe (ducting presumably) coming up?

also why does New Southgate suddenly require VDU screen instead of mirrors.

Why are the steps needed.

Assuming they are for the DOO CCTV monitors, the platform will be to allow access to and from them, and provide a working platform that complies with Legislation. The fence will also allow work to be carried out with trains running, whereas without it, the line would have to be blocked.

Changes to Health & Safety Working at Height Regulations now specify protection measures where a fall from any height can occur, irrespective of how small the fall can be. In the workplace you will now find that small steps have been replaced by guarded platforms, and in some cases you cannot now replace lamps in a lighting unit without a proper access platform - even though they may be just out of arms reach.

There are a couple of structures similar to this that have appeared outside Moor St, Birmingham. There aren't any mirrors at the station to replace.

Any ideas?

I've only seen cases in Scotland (and I've seen plenty of cases in Scotland, living in an area where DOO is very prevalent), but all DOO monitors I've seen are on the platform, not the other side. Which actually makes a lot of sense. So I'd be very surprised if they were for that!

Platform 4 at Potters Bar the DOO is on the non-platform side of the train, so it is on the driver's side (the platform is on the right of the train). Presumably also due to the location of the station buildings which would mean if the DOO was on the platform it would cause an obstruction for passengers.
There obviously is no choice for the fast lines other than to put the DOO on the platforms.

There is a walking route next to the main line because there is a shunting point allowing a train to go from snow hill to the new bay platforms. Don't recall it looking exactly like that but it does have metal guard rail(s) like that.

Ive also seen vaguely similar platforms installed for location cabinets. Not so high though.

A mirror system becomes less useful as trains get significantly longer.

With a number of cameras along the platform, and a split screen monitor, or separate monitors, the driver can see all the individual carriages in similar levels of detail. Much safer all round I expect.

Thanks for your reply. I've only seen them a few times and I always forget to look. I'm generally looking longingly at the Wrexham Shropshire HST wishing I were travelling further than I am.

To be pedantic, there’s a couple of flaws with that statement: Firstly, Wrexham and Shropshire never operated any HSTs, it’s 67+carriages+DVT working in push-pull mode, and secondly, it’s Chiltern that’s running the W&S stock from Moor Street now that Wrexham and Shropshire are defunct, only the livery (and the exquisitely refurbished interiors) remains. Ok, pedantry finished.

It's so frustrating when you get stuck on a train that calls at all stations and it stops. Seconds later, a HST blasts pass you. I bet the drivers are laughing inside their cabs!

Also, when you stand against the doors and a HST shoots past, making the train jolt. It's so funny watching people flying into the air going 'oh my God, what happened?'

Workmen about the station pulling cables, station is getting re-painted as well.

From a speed limits point of view, "HST" refers to any of: 91+Mk 4s+DVT; Class 158, 159, 168, 170, 171, 175, 180, 220, 221, 222, 253(sic), 254(sic) or 373.

So sayeth Module SP of the rule book, anyway...
