What made you happy today?

Achieving a new time record on my commute of 30 minutes exactly door-to-door (at this time it usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour) without having to propel myself any quicker than a momentary light jog. It's the little things...

A kg down in weight since last week which I wasn't really expecting as I'm just back from 4 days away from a weekend with pals mainly eating and drinking and not much exercise as the weather was foul and not worth subjecting the dogs or bairns to. A pleasant surprise.

Booked a Uber last night to get home from York - was rather surprised it only cost £21.69 for the 25 mile or so journey! (usually it would have cost £27.11 but I had a 20% off offer probably because I don't need to use taxis very often)

Driver was very happy as they were about to head in that direction anyway to get home and literally just got the job before doing so!

The most amusing part was we had a bit of a chat on the journey and it turns out Uber is just their side job and they work as a funeral director too

Something that has made me happy today - seeing the Britannic Explorer just now at Plymouth. I've seen a lot of photos of it online and in the magazines so it's been nice to see it in person! I hoped it would be hauled by one of the blue 66s to match the coaches but seeing a double-header made up for it.

And another thing that's made me happy - the weather being a bit naff, but being nice and warm inside. It's the little things.

I’m on an Avanti service at the moment heading south (first journey on an 80-whatever they are — bouncy little fellas aren’t they?). Slowed right down on the approach to Ledburn Junction, at which point it transpired that a late running LNR service was being routed ahead of us, US > UF.

Just as that service overtook us, queue lots of enthusiastic blows on the horn, which I’m really hoping was the driver of the other train basically going “nur nur nur nur nur” to our driver as we pretty much grind to a halt

I managed to "tick off" catching a train to/from every central London terminus today, as I made it to Fenchurch Street, Moorgate and Waterloo East.

On the way into Waterloo earlier today I felt a tad disheartened seeing a 450 in the bay platform at Woking as I've only seen 455s in that platform for as long as I can remember. However later I was quite chuffed to see a 455 waiting to take me to Surbiton from Waterloo. I'll be honest, 455s were never trains I rode often, but the experience on board one of them today felt quite surreal, proper loud and clunky.

It chucked it down all day but in typical British style that didn't really seem to bother anybody, including the usual mile long queue stood outside Bettys Tea Room!

Something that made me happy today: finding in a charity shop Changing Engines by Michael Hollick, which covers the steam-to-diesel transition around Birmingham and Rugby, and A Journey in Preservation: 50 Years of the Western Locomotive Association by Julian Ogle - for 50p each! An absolute bargain and I shall be enjoying them both, I am sure, in the next few days/weeks as they look to be informative and well-presented.

Found out about two separate exams with two separate organisations I took last week, I passed.

I was a bit concerned because at the end of the second one I got a message along the lines of, "Please wait for the exam driver to close.", but it never did. Staff came and said aw sht we had one of these last week and the results didn't submit, so I was dreading having to take the same exam again!

Jolly good work @styles! The stress of exams (especially computerised ones) is never fun but the effort was clearly worth it.


Something that's made me happy today - finding out that the Exeter - Plymouth line is featured in the latest 'Train Sim World' game. It's a route I've travelled a lot so I think it'll be one to put on my wishlist!
