Simple pleasure. Following a week's heavy rain in the South Downs and on Hampshire coast, I ventured this morning to where I'd lived for five years. I hoped the village ford would offer me photo opportunities of the stream with deep, fast flowing water.
It transpired the water was neither deep nor fast flowing: so no stranded cars! However the morning light was perfect, as attached.

I mentioned a few weeks ago about welcoming our daughter into the world

Today has made me happy for a few reasons
She has taken her first trains (195116 being the first)
She is now officially registered (and the registrar was lovely!)
We took a trip to the NRM as a family. Additionally to which, the signalling screens being back at the NRM was good to see, as they weren’t in last time I went)
We had an impromptu meet up with @yorkie for a drink

Riding a class 91/Mark 4 set on the 12 03 Kings Cross -Leeds, there was suddenly a random automated announcement shortly before Peterborough "Cardphones are available in the vestibules for your convenience. Phone cards may be purchased from the buffet car". Oh the nostalgia!

Not sure. I was seated in first class, so I had all my refreshments brought to my seat. Sadly though, I suspect not!

Probably sounds a bit selfish, but had a good mountain bike ride over Cannock Chase today without the hordes of school holiday crowds. Obviously still quite a few visitors near to the car parks but away from there hardly a soul.

Cardphones...

I tried one of those on a train once. Bought what I thought was a big enough value card, got connected and it just ate my credit in no time at all! Just about enough time for "I'M ON THE TRAIN".
They were a distinctive shade of green, but I think there were also special editions for advertising etc.

Dinner on 1V96, 17 22 Cardiff Central - Holyhead between Newport and hopefully (touch wood! ) Chester. Now enjoying an excellent apple & blackberry crumble with custard while waiting for time at Shrewsbury....having started with garlic mushrooms on sourdough toast, followed by a main of spicy chickpea and red lentil dhal with more sourdough toast. (Non-veggie options also available!). My aperitif was a can of Glamorgan Brewery Fresh Juicy Pale Ale and I accompanied the meal with a very acceptable Argentinian Malbec. Bliss!

Just found this thread! Today a bus into town arrived just as I left the hairdresser, then I got the last packet of bread sticks in Tesco, then I got home two minutes before the heavens opened. It's the little things that make us happy.

Should have bought a lottery ticket as I seem to be on a lucky streak.

After a not-so-fun journey on busy trains today, I've been made very happy by the Last Night of the Proms on Radio 3 this evening. I've loved the brilliant rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody, and the selection from My Fair Lady is proving very enjoyable indeed.

I've enjoyed a wonderful day trip on a North East Rover from Elsecar to Hexham today, out via Leeds and the S&C, back via Newcastle and Doncaster. It struck me that, even in stormy weather, we have such a scenic landscape in Northern England and that you see magnificent views from the train you don't get from any other means of transport.

After a hospital appointment in London today, I had a little explore of east London. I went to have a curry for a late lunch along Brick Lane, then had a pint in the Pride of Spitalfields - a real time warp of a pub and it was full of old Cockneys.
After that I had a stroll to the Kings Head in Bethnal Green.
This is the most multicultural part of the UK, and perhaps the whole of Europe. Everyone I encountered was friendly, and I felt completely safe walking around this area. There was a huge mix of different people about. Asian, Black, White, rich and poor.
This is what it is to be British. I felt proud to walk in these parts.
It absolutely disgusts me and saddens me that the racist and xenophobic Tommy Robinson and Reform crowd consider this a negative. Multiculturalism is wonderful, and I love it. Stuff anyone who things otherwise

This is what it is to be British. I felt proud to walk in these parts.
It absolutely disgusts me and saddens me that the racist and xenophobic Tommy Robinson and Reform crowd consider this a negative. Multiculturalism is wonderful, and I love it. Stuff anyone who things otherwise

Amen to that! I've recently been studying some literature based on the Notting Hill Carnival, and had a similar epiphany of my own. The thought of how well we humans work when we're united is very pleasing.

Indeed. This is what we should be focussing on. It completely baffles me that so many prefer the divisive and hateful rubbish being pumped out by politicians and the media. There is so much to celebrate about this country. Life is far too short to wallow in misery. It’s so sad to see some of my friends and family being influenced by the current negativity.
