An encounter with a GWR ticket office clerk made me happy today: I went to Oxford station to pick up a Ticket on Departure (ToD), but also wanted to buy another ticket. After I picked up the ToD at the TVM, I started to use the same TVM to get the other ticket, but as I entered the station name, my attention was drawn to the ticket office where a happy-looking clerk sat. I never bought a ticket from a ticket office, so I decided to buy the ticket there instead. I said what I needed, gave the money, he returned change and the ticket. I said "Thank you so much, have a lovely day". He just smiled so nicely and radiated such joy. On my way home I was really happy about this. Good that I didn't use the TVM and that ticket offices still exist!

It was Sainsburys- £297 ! I done a Go Compare search first and noticed that most quotes seemed to be cheaper than last year !

Just finished a week's holiday in Chelmorton in the Derbyshire Dales. Able to walk or cycle every day. Rain only at night. Weather perfect for both walking & cycling. Added to this, excellent evenings in the Church Inn Chelmorton. Wonderful beer and even more wonderful food. Would definitely recommend it.

When it comes to driving I'm the original 'Captain Slow'. My pub mates thought it hilarious a couple of years ago when I received a speeding ticket (37 in a 30).

Having a first class section on a class 171 on the Marshlink line almost to myself, while the rest of the train is packed, as few people know that first class is declassified on this line. At least I hope it still is….

The seats on the Southern 171s are probably the best in the south east. The seats on the 375, 377, 395, 700 arn’t particularly comfortable. Air con on these seem better than some of the newer stock too.

Yesterday actually - it was my birthday and I'm now 86. Not a number generally considered to be "significant", but perhaps after a certain point every additional birthday is significant. Marbles and mobility still intact: that's something to be pleased about as well. We went to Reading so that my wife could buy me a lightweight summer jacket, but explorations in M&S and John Lewis confirmed that jacket size printed on the label bears no relation to reality and we didn't find anything suitable [there might be a pun in there]. Arriving back in Basingstoke with about 50 minutes to wait for the next train to Overton (where car parking is free) the display ominously showed "Please enquire" and it turned out that we'd have one hour and 50 minutes to wait as the 14.38 was cancelled. A bus journey instead, and then a 1.35 km walk from the village centre to the station to collect the car. Such are the highlights of a day in the life of an 86-year-old!

As we arrived at the hospital, I saw an amber light ahead and then a red and then another red - just happened to have come across the nearby level crossing when a train passed to Scarborough

The hospital also backs onto the railway line so for a while on the ward I could watch the passing services and on walking round the grounds on the evening, I waited to see the last train of the night pass

I was also permitted to put my car in the staff car park, which is next to maternity, to pick the wife and little one up. As we left the hospital, a Picc train passed. Fitting.

The hospital has various artworks around, this being one of them

Last night BBC4 showed a selection of programs featuring the comedian Jasper Carrot. I watched them tonight and haven’t laughed so much for a long time. My face aches from smiling for so long. His “Back to the Front” episode even put a smile on Mrs H who had never heard of him! A very funny man.

Quite a few years ago I saw him at Birmingham Hippodrome. Being a Brummie he said it was like being at home with his mates. An absolutely wonderful couple of hours (or more).

Jasper Carrott's, The Magic Roundabout, is hilarious, that was a B side from his Funky Moped single (its up on youtube), funnily enough that B side is what made Funky Moped a hit.

Another hilarious one is when he had a mole in his garden, & there's a great version on youtube which someone has done an animated version of.

We were fortunate to see him recently at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, touring alongside Alistair McGowan, and I'm pleased to say that Jasper still has it at 80 years young. Mind you, the (older, not surprisingly) crowd gave him a heroes welcome - it's the first time I've seen a comedian get a standing ovation as they walked on to the stage. Great night.

Hearing my wife's ranting yesterday evening and again this morning, about the two sixty something, able-bodied female owners of these two cars. Parked so badly that they'd both obstructed access to parking spaces around them. On their return to their cars, neither owner seemed remotely aware; one was more interested in lighting a cigarette and sitting in her obstructing vehicle...

At least it helps reinforce stereotypes.
