Reminds me of when I was running late for a train some years back.

Got on to the platform to find it was scheduled to run a few minutes later...
As it had been swapped for a 91 instead of the usual Azuma!
Result.

I was on time for a train in Switzerland which departed on time, from the same platform as advertised, and arrived at my destination on time, with the same class seating; but because it wasn't the literal unit it was booked to be, they apologised to me and gave me free coffee.

The pal I was with was so perplexed that we were being compensated for no delay and no change in seating.

Yeah I have no idea. We were also on a special scouts & guides rail ticket which was valid from any border railway station to Kandersteg. One person in our group didn't follow the instructions to fill in the details on the ticket when it was used, and the guard laughed at him then wagged his finger a bit. Possibly the beer and paprika crisps he'd bought from the trolley communicated his paid back vibe.

On these lines..I was travelling back to work on a Hebridean island some years ago. I arrived at Wigan North Western with my very cheap advance ticket to Glasgow Central in hand...the display informed me that my booked train was 95 minutes late, but shortly after that the previous train arrived..it was only 65 minutes late. The station staff advised me to catch it, however train was packed and so much for my booked seat! I was therefore standing with the prospect of remaining so for the rest of the journey. The conductor came through, assessed the situation, moved forward into first class, shunted all of the first passengers into the next coach, came back and announced to all the standing passengers that the adjacent first class coach was now for standard passengers. Tannoy announcement that tea and coffee were now free to all passengers...if they made their way to the buffet car.
I made my connection to Oban becasue we were only 5 minutes late now. From despair to good result!

Some years ago I was in London visiting family and lost my rail staff passes in Greenwich. I shelled out 60 odd quid for a public rate ticket for what should have been a free journey, such is life. However the railway gods smiled and brought down the overhead wires so I had to take a diversionary route and was just over an hour late so I got my money back.

A few weeks late my manager received my passes in an envelope from our safety team as a very kind and honest person who I have never had any way of thanking had obviously found them somewhere and posted them to the address on the back of my safety critical work ID.

All in all it shows that a) it pays to be honest, as I got my fare back anyway and b) there are some good people about.

A delayed train to home made me happy today considering I was going to miss it if it was on time.

I made a -80 minute connection at Rosenheim 10 days or so ago. It made comfortably as RJ82 from Ancona was around two hours late. Even better, having gone blind for it with no gen, RJ82 was required ÖBB Vectron 1293047.

Just spent our thirty first wedding anniversary moored above Sileby Lock and Mill on the River Soar. No other boats on the mooring. We sat together watching the sun go down and listening to the wiers flowing. It's a fabulous spot.

Three excellent pints in my local - the Fox & Goose in Hebden Bridge - for the first time in two weeks; thanks to an unexpected hiatus in my antibiotic treatment, having suddenly become allergic to penicillin. Starting on new antibiotics today though, so I'll be back on the wagon for another week or two!

Hope this doesn't derail this post too much but.. we were looking at getting a water butt recently. What do you use yours for?

I am wanting to get one to use for watering plants when the weather is scorchio. But the place we are thinking of putting it is a bit difficult to access, and I'm thinking I may be able to run a water pipe over the top of the shed.. I just need to get pressure into the system.

If I can't reasonable do that, what else could I use the water for?

Water butt gets filled from the shed roof.
Basically just use it for watering potted plants around the garden and for watering the indoor plants. Shrubs & lawn have to look after themselves, especially during this drought period. Treated water is too precious at this time to spray onto the garden. Veggie plots excluded.

Ours is similar then, just the butt will not be in a convenient location to fill up from. I might have to look at options for pressurising the system so I can run a pipe over the shed roof. Otherwise there's little chance I'll be arsed humping buckets/cans of water through the shed (which will need stuff removing from to be possible).

Visited the Launceston Steam Railway yesterday. The train was being hauled by Dorothea of 1901 vintage. The highlight was the driver having to blow the whistle numerous times to chase away several sheep that had got onto the line.

Hope this doesn't derail this post too much but.. we were looking at getting a water butt recently. What do you use yours for?

I have four water butts, 220 litres each. One out the front, three at the back.
Those at the back are to water the fruit and veg in the greenhouse and the garden (others of course may prefer to grow flowers).
That at the front is used with a pressure washer to wash the cars. I can just manage to wash and rise five cars with one full water butt. In this latest heat wave I've changed the use of the front one to replenishing the fish pond; that seems more important to me than a shiny car! A long hose attached to the tap on the butt drains it into the pond (eventually).
