What is this coach?

Can anyone help me with this train? I photographed it at Kinloid on the Mallaig line last month but need to know what is the coach and ideally what was the train doing. The coach I believe is TIC 2 - perhaps track inspection coach? Many thanks.

Not sure but it would appear to have a generator (I would assume) fitted judging by the black mark on the roof and some underfloor gear as well!!

Why would this need a second 37? It's clearly not for traction effort, nor can I imagine that the risk of breakdown is this critical (unlike the flasks).

Is it just filling in as a DVT? Essentially a "DMT"?

Not entirely certain, but there was a similar combination doing the rounds of the Nottingham - Lincoln line recently. Two different 'test' trips in the same week.

Topping & tailing with the Class 31 was 97304 (Cl 37)

A combination of both reasons, redundancy in case of failure is a bonus but the ability to reverse direction without having to run-round would be the main reason. Apart from the increasing number of locations where running round is now impossible due to rationalised layouts, even where the trackwork still allows it the delays and clogging up of busy locations mean it is avoided if at all possible.


To think that something that was done thousands of times a day in hundreds of locations at one time would now bring the entire network to it's knees if suddenly required. The railways are so dull nowadays in comparison.

save running round & to provide a way of getting the thing moved in the event of a failure
