Funny you say that - I was thinking the very same! My misspent youth was on rattling AEC / Leyland smoke-machines, that even, sometimes, got all the way without failing!
A recent article on the class 313, described them as "...First of the SECOND generation EMUs".
So if Mk1 and Bulleid-derived (1951 EPBs to 1970s REPs) are the first generation, what does that make of the LNER Tyneside units, LMS Merseyside 502-503 units?
And even moreso, LSWR 3SUB units and the LBSCR Coulsdon overhead bow-collector units....?
