I'll apply and hopefully one day progress to the mainline and HSTs 
I don't know what it's like at Ilford, but Reading wasn't that challenging. As said, you just move the turbo units around the depot, couple them up if necessary, and do outside and inside preps. You don't get involved with fueling or tanking toilets, the fitters and cleaners do all that stuff.
Salary I think is 34K now.
Also, it is a good way to go mainline. Several manos as they're called have gone mainline in the past. It's a good foot in the door and you'll have an advantage over other driver applicants as you'll have driving experience, albeit at 5mph.
