Its a depot driver. A shunter at a bus depot often has a PCV license and so can drive on a public road.

If it's for the position at Reading depot, then a full description of the role is on the careers section on the First Great Western website.

As said, it is a depot driver role, totally within the confines of the depot. You do not go out onto the mainline. When I did it, it was mostly night shifts as that is when the trains come back in, but it may have changed with perhaps some more day shifts.

By the looks of it you are under the engineering team and not operations so probably no automatic promotion to main line either. If its Reading is anything like Ilford that will be quite a challenging job.

I'd think the salary ought to be around the 30k mark. I seem to recall hearing that it's maximum 5mph and basically just shifting Turbo sets around the shed.

Current salary is just over £35K. Max speed at Reading depot is 15mph.

I don't know what it's like at Ilford, but Reading wasn't that challenging. As said, you just move the turbo units around the depot, couple them up if necessary, and do outside and inside preps. You don't get involved with fueling or tanking toilets, the fitters and cleaners do all that stuff.

Salary I think is 34K now.

Also, it is a good way to go mainline. Several manos as they're called have gone mainline in the past. It's a good foot in the door and you'll have an advantage over other driver applicants as you'll have driving experience, albeit at 5mph.

I was at the old depot. I don't know what it's like since the whole operation has moved to the new depot?

Having checked with a former colleague, it seems there have been a couple of incidents , so I concede to your earlier comment.
