This was the stupid craze that a lad climbed on and laid flat on a balcony edge recently....fell off...and died.

I thought that would have been a lesson that should have made any "normal" person think twice...but evidentially does not.

Had no idea this was a craze, but about 20 years ago, my dad did his jury service at a coroner's court where a youth did something very similar. Unfortunately he got his timing all wrong and got dashed to pieces by an express.

As someone who was not too long ago a teenager, I think I can shed some light on this.

I'm of the belief that nowadays people are for more susceptable to being influenced by popular opinion, and as such follow whatever fads come along. Dare I say it, people are becoming sheep. Because of this they lack any real character, so have feel the need to fake excentricities.

The worst offenders are "scene" kids. They prance about pretending to be random and excentric, dressed in stupid coloured and mismatched clothes, with jeans so tight their reproductives organs have lost all circulation. I reckon they're afraid of not being accepted as themselves, but I don't think they're even aware of this. Their families and old friends can see the change occur though.

It's this desire to fit in and fake that leads to stupid fads such as planking in my view.

And when someone gets killed doing it all we will see in the news papers is "He was such a nice little boy wouldn't hurt anyone".

With these teenagers it seems they've got a "Its not going to happen to me attitude", once they loose a leg or get killed they've got there self to blame, I really hope (call me what you want) someone gets seriously hurt so it echoes the message keep off the railways if you want to keep your life. It seems thats the only way to get into there minds, or maybe it will not, I have no idea.

Scene kids are okay, usually they are the same kind of people who would have been goths/grebs 10/20 years ago, but dont want all the stick that chavs associate with goths.

A fiar few of them will have been bullied at school, and will have found that the scene kids are nice to people, and will have joined their ranks (usually musical tastes are compatible too, maybe not identical, but reasonably close)

About tight trousers strangling reporductive organs, it keeps teenage pregnancy down relative to chavs, who usually forgo trousers that rise above the buttocks

He could have at least laid parallel to the tracks though, reducing the chances of decapitiation

I've got to say that it is ironic that, since this story originated in the York Press, they had an article tonight about a woman who did a Bungee jump from the Tees Transporter Bridge in the name of "Charidee" for a woman who broke her neck while pole dancing. I'm still a teenager, albeit late teens but think the majority of the idiots doing things like this really should grow a character of their own. People are sheep, its too true and its why bullying hasn't stopped increasing. People who don't fit to the set character of 'normal' are taunted and made to feel stupid because of it.

Despite all these abnormalities I can still act my age like a normal 18 year old without risking my life.

I'm sure I heard of a case once where someone was demonstrating to someone else about hearing trains coming from miles away by putting an ear to the line, only the idiot was in 3rd rail territory and no prizes for guessing which rail he put his ear to...

The train drivers i know (even if they had hit him) would've said 'serve the silly little ******* right' and then enjoyed a few days off work which i believe the companies now insist you take off to get over these things.

They might SAY they would but I had a "one under" a few years ago and my driver was off work two weeks and still wasn't 100% when he came back. When he did come back he had a SPAD on a bit of line notorious for wheelslip and the TOC did him for it.
