This is an odd one.

Now I'm no expert on infrastructure, but is this article just spouting rubbish or are there any good ideas in there?

The writer of the article doesn't seem to realise that the Wharfedale line is already electrified but would need redoing for Underground trains to run on it. Presuimably it'd have to be in addition to the current system or trains would be unable to run to Bradford. I suspect the current frequency on the line has more to do with the level of usage or stock availability (or paths into Leeds). Otherwise it probbaly wouldn't drop to hourly in the evening.

I sincerely hope they've factored in the cost of the additional airport requirements. If this scheme reaches fruition, there will be a lot of pigs requiring take-off and landing facilities.

Is this the same story which was discussed (and robustly criticised) in this thread: Tube trains on Harrogate Line?

Yup, its the same story.

I think the confusion is that (in railway terms) the Wharfdale line is the Ilkley line (to/from Leeds/ Bradford).

However, the Wharf continues a long way east, all the way to Tadcaster (where they make Newcastle Brown Ale/ Fosters lager and various other "non-Yorkshire" drinks!).

So, the Harrogate line crosses the Wharf in what locals would call Wharfdale, though in railway terms "Wharfdale" and Harrogate are different lines

(if that makes sense)

Wharfedale has two 'e's in its spelling - heard someone getting chastised one day for spelling it incorrectly when I worked in Leeds.

Even Alan Williams took quite a few column inches on this matter, in his usual summary article in the October 2011 issue of Modern Railways. Stock that is nearing life-expiration is somewhat a shortsighted view of any situation.

But then, I am just a philosopher

Sometimes I wonder if all these new and wonderful uses for soon-to-be redundant LU stock are not the bright idea of some PR consultant to LU as a quick way of disposing of their soon-to-redundant assets:roll:

Manchester Metrolink have placed a further order for another 12 M5000 trams to replace the oldest T68 trams in their fleet. Perhaps they should join in this jamboree of redundant asset disposal, when the 12 new trams arrive.

Those Manchester tram are positively youthful compared to the District line stock.
