What is the point in the re-registering of these buses?

483/6/95/99 are the green examples, 482/88/95/98 still in red. Been with WGL nearly a year now...

Yet a majority of the Darts are green already which arrived much later. I guess due to the size of the fleet it's easier to lose a single decker than a double decker for a few weeks.

More mention of Western Greyhound in the media today. BBC Radio Cornwall spoke to Mark Howarth this morning about the issues the company have at the moment.

I did not hear the interview however he is back on the air between 1200 - 1500 this afternoon on the Lunchtime phone-in programme again on Radio Cornwall.

Just listened to the radio show, he blames sabotaging staff, design faults in the buses, the council and the weather. He gives the impression that none of his problem are his fault. Which I do not believe. He uses many unbelievable excuses aswell.

Hmm. Might have to give it a listen later, sounds a little like a case of its this and that and this and that and none of it is my or my companies fault case. I'd also not think it the wisest of ideas going onto a radio show and publically blaming sabotaging staff - there may or may not be any truth in it, but the old phrase of ''Keep your friends close but your enemies closer' does spring to mind! Apart from the flooding and winter storms, I wonder how Mr Howarth can blame the weather for service issues? (The Trident that fell over being an exception). And again, the Council Slagging - Quite possibly not the way to aim for future council tendered contracts, by slagging off the people who give you the services to run?

Featured on BBC spotlight tonight. Spotlights reporter was waiting for a service in the village of shortlanesend which failed to turn up. Excuse given was the bus was withdrawn due to a smashed window from a low branch.
There was a second case and another bus and another broken window by a low branch as the excuse for that one too.
The design fault I assume affects many other operators, as I'm sure the buses are not unique to western greyhound?

The WGL Tridents are not fitted with nudge bars to protect the upper windscreens.

I'm not aware of any broken screens today.

Two broken screens today according to the excuses given to spotlight for the buses not turning up in their two cases.

I have to agree, this is not going to end well. Has there been any reports of First buses being late travelling into Truro?

I'm starting to wonder that! It really is a shame to see any independent fall from grace, let alone in the way that Western Greyhound seems to be doing. Mark Howarth's rants seem to be verging on the desperate - If there is an issue, Address it, Work towards fixing it and possibly admit it. Don't go on a rant to the media, while trying to aim for a sympathy vote or revolution and not fixing the immediate issue at hand - That's what First are doing (addressing their issues and turning themselves around!) But look at other independents, I'm sure they have their issues too but keep them under wraps. But something fundamentality seems to be cracking in WG, Hit and miss vehicles, hit and miss services, and a MD who seems content with blaming anything but any failings of their own.

The other phrase of airing dirty laundry in public is also starting to spring to mind.

Western Greyhound bus services across Cornwall have been condemned by a national passengers’ group, following thousands of complaints. And in a remarkable interview, the bus company’s chief executive blamed some of his own staff for trying to sabotage the company.

The company’s problems have come under the microscope following chaotic services which in recent weeks have frequently seen buses failing to turn up. Although Western Greyhound has tried to update passengers with timetable information on its website, many passengers without internet access have been left waiting at bus stops with no idea that the bus was not coming.

Bus Users UK estimates that some days as many as 10 buses have failed to arrive. Services in the Liskeard, St Austell, Newquay, Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow areas have all been affected. The campaign group’s chief executive, Claire Walters, said she had been “swamped” with complaints and was “extremely concerned.”

One passenger, who asked not to be named, wrote to the Cornish Guardian to describe problems near Padstow. “We have seen queues of 20-30 people waiting for an hour,” she said. “Locals can’t get to work, or from work. Hospital appointments in Bodmin and Truro, needing the Wadebridge connection, have been missed.”

She said the problems seemed to affect the 555 route in particular, although other services had also seen delays or cancellations.

Jason Higgs, from Liskeard, has set up a Facebook page called “Western Greyhound, Where’s My Bus?” and claims hundreds of buses fail to reach their destinations every week.

Ms Walters said Bus Users UK was in touch with the Traffic Commissioner about Western Greyhound’s services in Cornwall – the Commissioner has the power to strip the company of its operating licence. “He could also impose a big fine,” she said. “The trouble is that if that happened, the company might go bust and passengers in Cornwall might be even worse off than they are today. There is no magic wand.

“But the company has got to sort itself out. Passengers are entitled to rely on the published timetable. It should not come as a surprise to the company that there is a lot of tourist traffic in the summer.”

Speaking on BBC Radio Cornwall this morning, Western Greyhound chief executive Mark Howarth acknowledged the company’s failings and set out a variety of reasons.

These included damage to the bus fleet caused by last winter’s storms, resulting in increased mechanical breakdowns and maintenance costs, and commercial difficulties stemming from the requirement to carry some elderly passengers free of charge – but in a remarkable outburst at the end of the interview, he blamed some of his own staff for trying to sabotage the company.

“We are going through some very serious difficulties at the moment,” he said. “But most of our buses do run. People say they are unreliable, when in fact they are full. But I can’t wave a magic wand and put it right tomorrow.

“I’ve got a very hardworking team. Unfortunately there are one or two individuals – a small number of our members of staff, who are working against us and trying to sabotage us. And these people know who they are and we’re working in order to deal with that because the bulk of the staff are really working hard. And I would say to the passengers please don’t treat everybody the same way if they have a problem.”

In May last year, the company lost 35 buses in an arson attack at its Summercourt depot. In January of this year, a further three buses were lost in a second arson attack near Liskeard.

Couple of things from that article.

1 - Mark Howarth goes on about "one or two members of staff trying to sabotage us". If that's the case, take action against them. Are they still working for the firm? If so, then why are they? Surely some form of disciplinary action should be taken against staff doing this sort of thing.

2 - The person from bus user uk is right, in that if the TC stripped the firm of its licence, things could be worse. But, what normally happens is that where local bus services are run, there is a few weeks given before the licence terminates, so that local authorities, and indeed other operators, can make and provide alternative arrangements.

Their original Facebook page was shut down after it was hacked, Mark mentioned this on the show earlier, but it was hacked by a member of staff who had left the company. I believe the same thing happened when the new page started up. Nothing ever came of the three men arrested in connection with the Arson attack either.

Is the radiator position (design fault mentioned) affecting first and stagecoach who operate similar vehicles across the UK?

A look at the current fleet list suggests there are less buses in the fleet than required to keep to the scheduled timetable allowing for required maintanance, servicing and regulatory checks. I would estimate around 5-10 vehicles short in the fleet at present to maintain the timetable.

Why is morale so low? He blames angry customers, so why are the customers so angry?

Last Friday I was waiting for the 587 at Truro station, there was another gentleman waiting for another service, the 550 which failed to stop to pick him up. He was only going as far as Treliske so the route was duplicated by the 587, but left the gentleman waiting about 25 minutes extra.

Also timetables are seemingly positioned wherever takes their fancy. On the outbound side of the road opposite Truro station there is only a timetable for inbound services. Very useful, I ended up lending my timetable book to a fellow passenger.

I can't argue with the summer traffic point made, in St Agnes due to parking anything bigger than a solo wouldn't have got through, in Perranporth a car towing a caravan was parked completely blocking the buses getting through. Despite this though the service I was on made up time and arrived bang on time in Newquay.

Something else about WG, and Facebook. In their FAQs section, they had a question about why people have to change bus en route, on what used to be a through service. They explained about the EU legislation on driving limits etc. I then sent them an e-mail, explaining how Stagecoach Fife got round the issue, by registering a long service in two or even three sections, but showing it as one route, with through fares available, and no need to change bus. The X24 is an example of this.

No reply from the e-mail, but a reply when I Facebooked them. They said they would then look into it. I don't know what action they took, if any.

Yes, as Mark said earlier, one of the large PLCs has said they'd never buy from the manufacturer again. That is Stagecoach who have had endless trouble with Man vehicles that suck up the s*** out of the gutter and clog the radiator, the problems with the batch formerly used on Wests 66 springs to mind. Do WGL have any Man engined Solos?

Again Mark said earlier they have a fleet of 74 buses and as part of that a spares fleet of 12, which is up from 6 last summer. Is the PVR really only 62? He also said they are looking to drop routes and don't plan to continue the 574/5 for much longer. A route he says the council pressured them in to running with less than the 56 days notice required from the TC.

They operate 29 routes, which seem to require between 2-3 buses on each route at a quick glance.

I'm assuming that due to required maintenance that on any given day not every vehicle can be in service.

The most recent fleet list has 17 Darts, 8 Tridents, 21 Beavers and 28 Solos giving your 74 buses Mark mentioned.

Those 21 Beavers have a fast approaching DDA deadline.

Looking at photos of their solos most appear to be MAN powered- grille near side rear corner if I am remembering correctly?

Although some are technically seen as coaches, due, I believe, to a lack of standee accommodation, these have a later DDA deadline.

I've heard this myself. Is it a process that's easily done to convert them all to coach spec?

Yes - you amend the max loading plate on the vehicle and in it's documentation, and then take it down to VOSA for a test.

Basically just a paper exercise.

Maybe the design fault he mentioned is putting another deck on top of the bottom one?

Edit-
After reading other posts I see it is actually the MAN engined Solos.
