This handy booklet will no longer be issued from December.

I'm told timetable production including posters now sits solely with the new Northern franchise, and Metro will cease providing their own, removing various duplications where there are currently Metro and Northern timetables available. A side effect of this is discontinuing the combined book.

Will be interesting to see if Northern continue with Metro's named lines on the timetables, or just go with 'timetable 37' like they do currently.

I think Metro were possibly the last PTE to still issue rail timetables? With the exception of Merseytravel possibly?

That's bad news. I've always found the West Yorkshire timetable to be a very handy publication. It's been going since the late 80s/early 90s.

Having a quick look I think only six need replacing (Airedale, Hallam, Penistone, Pontefract, Wakefield and Wharfedale), everything else is either already covered by Northern or could be scrapped. I remember when South Yorkshire stopped producing theirs, Northern only had to produce another one since everything else was already covered by West Yorkshire or existing Northern timetables.

The West Yorkshire composite is quite a useful timetable so it is sad to see it go, however it is ridiculous that the likes of the Harrogate have had two identical timetables produced for the last however many years.

Just a sign of the times really, who needs paper timetables when you're carrying around a smartphone - same with maps

Not sure I'd agree about maps. Sure for general moving about on roads they are good, but head into the countryside, especially the Dales and a smartphone map is not much use and will likely see you in trouble.

But as far as the printed timetables go, I've just realised I have the latest one still lurking at the bottom of my rucksack, still unused. Just watch though, the moment I actually need one when the smartphone can't connect for whatever reason, I won't have it on me....

There are still a few of we dinosaurs who choose not to have a smart phone (nobody left that I need to contact urgently).

And even on computer screens, many maps are unsatisfactory. Put the whole map on screen, and the text is usually too small to read. Zoom in to get legible text, and you cannot view the full route.

The new timetables are now up on Northern's website: the routes have largely been copied, given Northern livery and and numbered at the end of the existing range. As an example here's the new Airedale timetable andhere are the rest.

The current West Yorkshire Airedale line timetable also includes information on through trains to Carlisle and Morecambe, the KWVR, the Middleton Railway and 71 bus link from Steeton. All of these are missing from Northern's replacement effort.

The combined book also has handy Leeds-Bradford and Leeds-Sheffield composite timetables. I can't see any replacements for these either.

Definitely a retrograde step in my opinion. There's no way I'd be whipping out my iPad mini in place of the combined booklet to check train times in dodgy areas e.g. Wakefield Kirkgate.

I wonder how many of the combined booklets West Yorkshire used to print and how much it costs them? I'd be prepared to pay a £1 (or £2 for a joint effort with South Yorkshire) to buy the handy booklet if they kept on producing them.

Metro are not printing ANY rail timetables as each TOC has to produce printed timetables as part of their franchise. I challenged Metro on this and the answer I got was it is cost cutting. I pointed out that if each TOC only listed their own trains in timetables then it was chaos I gave 2 examples Leeds to Micklefield & York/Selby requires 4 or 5 timetables whilst Leeds to Wakefield requires 7 or 8 timetables.

Not everyone has a smart phone and I can't carry a desktop computer round with me. I always collect a pile of leaflets and this has to be done twice a year. Now there will be a bigger pile when the very useful Metro booklet goes.

South Yorkshire PTE has stopped not only rail but also bus timetables, I think the only PTE to have done this.

That's a joke.

Smartphones that run out of batteries after five minutes and maps that never load up anyway.

I shall be lodging a formal complaint to Metro as this booklet is useful and avoids having to carry around silly numbers of booklets.

Is there an official source for this news that can be quoted ?

Absolutely no point in complaining, PTE's are being financially squeezed and savings have to come from somewhere, not their fault if a few people out there are still Luddites.

Have you ever tried getting internet coverage near Ribblehead ?

A few years back on my hols in Cornwall, I asked for the all Cornwall timetable which included mainline and branch connections, only to be told that it had been discontinued. Anyhow, roll forward a couple of years and it's now available in its former glory.

The PTEs may well be short of money but these are the same bodies that have wasted millions of pounds on failed tram or trolley-bus vanity projects in recent years. They really should to be focussing on cheap and simple measures to encourage public transport use and the WYPTE combined train timetable book is a perfect example of this. I am just about as far from a "Luddite" as you can get but I still make use of the paper booklet regularly and it has certainly encouraged me to take the train rather than drive.

Yesterday I travelled on trains from West Yorkshire to go walking in the Dales from Ribblehead station. In my jacket pocket was an OS map and the WYPTE timetable book. There's no mobile signal for miles around and the WiFi at the Station Inn has apparently been broken for several months due to problems with the BT line.

Last time I was at Wakefield Kirkgate and needed to check on train times there, along with connections in Leeds or Bradford, along with me in the waiting shelter were two youths, off their heads and openly sniffing lighter gas. Not the kind of place to be flashing about your expensive smart phone!

This is an internet forum, so most people on here will be happy to look up timetables online. However, there are still lots of people out there without access to the internet at home, and even fewer on a mobile device. These people need to be catered for and having to consult a massive pile of Northern/Trans Pennine/East Coast/Cross Country/Grand Central leaflets is a poor substitute for the current WYPTE booklet. I, and I'm sure many others, will miss it.

Why is everyone going on about smart phones and signals. Printed timetables are still available, just not ones produced by Metro.

Shame Northern couldn't have kept the colours on their new ones, like how I believe London Midland do on their West Midlands timetables.

If internet signal is a problem then you can download PDF timetables beforehand. I often do this when travelling in the countryside as it allows me to view timetables with ease and also saves carrying large amounts of paper around with me.

It's the difference between having to rifle through a bag of timetables and having one well designed, handy booklet which gives times for every route out of West Yorkshire.

We can at least hope that these 6 individual timetables remain in print. Then all passengers need to do is keep as many individual ones as help them, even if all 6.

Ive just looked at Leeds to Forster Square new timetable. Look at the evening times. Someone should be sacked for that! They need to scrap those timetables and start again.

Just had a quick look at my local timetable

The 07:38 Castleford - Leeds (Mon-Fri) is missing.

Leeds to Castleford services are shown in 2 separate timetables. (Knottingley/Goole and Sheffield/Nottingham). Neither timetable mentions that alternative services are available in the other timetable. Previously all Leeds Castleford services were shown in the Hallam timetable.

It is a shame that combined booklet is not going to be issued anymore, it was convenient to have everything in one place, rather than having to get several. I used to use it alot when visiting that area. (I think it even had the KWVR Steam services in it too.)

That is a bit confusing - In the past I always used the Leeds Bradford combined timetable to plan such a journey. Going back and forth in that timetable makes my head spin.

I'm convinced that they are trying to reduce passenger numbers between Shipley and Forster Square.

Originally the Cas-Leeds (only) train would've been on the Goole line timetable, but after the Hallam locals were diverted this way, the Hallam timetable showed the complete service, and any short working, though actually part of the Pontefract services, was removed from the Pontefract timetable.
So it looks like northern railway don't even know what journeys they run.

Are you on about the actual train times or the new leaflets?

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I've seen Timetable 8 making a reference to the Calder Valley Line on the website.

Should 8 be somewhere between the London, Tilbury, & Southend Railway (Table 1) and the Great Eastern Railway London Liverpool Street - Norwich (Table 11)?
