I was in Birmingham yesterday. I rode from Edgbaston Village to Bull Street, as on my last visit there during the Commonwealth Games the extension beyond Grand Central was suspended.

I avoided Millennium Point, as I prefer to go there once the extension through to Digbeth has opened, not currently due until next year.

If you mean the eastside route itself your fine waiting until the rest opens but if you specifically want Millennium Point tram stop this will close and be removed once the route is extended further as its only a temporary tram stop.

Millenium Point might appeal to the micro bashers in the meantime as return departures use a trailing crossover that will presumably become rare or abolished later?

Based on where the crossover is it does look to be in the permanent section of track, before the second track towards the city centre suddenly ends (photo attached), so I would think it would remain in place for use in disruption but yes it will not see regular use once the rest of the route opens.
Its quite similar to what happened at York Place tram stop on the Edinburgh Trams when the Newhaven extension opened.

Although I can manage without and maybe look for pix of it online, I thank you for this info so that any of us interested can see it while it remains open.

I'd imagine it will be like the one just after grand central, I don't think they use it since they extended to Library in 2019 as they prefer the one which is on the wolverhampton side of the stop.

Theres no stop on the route that isn’t used?

Think they are referring to the set of points rather than a stop.
I see.

I’ve seen it used, although granted not anytime recently.

Wednesbury to Dudley extension that was planned to open August delayed again. Issues with signals apparently.

No new date given other than ‘sometime this year’.

No surprise at all, team behind it couldn’t run a bath.

The first tram has gone into the extension, albeit only to test the connection to the existing route.

The press article I saw also stated many "new" trams awaiting for the line to open to be put into service....

Given that the opening of the bus station at Dudley is not until at least September, they may as well try to open the Metro extension and the bus station on the same day.

Good, the latest of many many delays was put down to ‘signal commissioning’ but if they’re running test trams how can that be?

Mind you the amount of times ‘signalling problems’ causes issues on the current line (especially since the Wolverhampton extension was utilised fully) is at least 2/3 times a week now.

Faulty and broken down trams still causing issues too though. Another part line suspension (Wednesbury-Wolverhampton) this past week.

On the subject of defective trams, wasn't there an extremely peeved famous grumble about the previous Ansaldo T69 trams that had absolutely grotesque wiring–looms that looked like "the worst Italian Spaghetti!" imaginable?

Each one being unique from what I recall hearing at the time.

in that case, it's just as well the line was not built to run too close to Spaghetti Junction

St George’s been out of use for over a week now due to signalling issues.

No major problem seeing as you can just go to Pipers Row.

Until today when a tram has broken down on Pipers Row, so no service into Wolverhampton at all.

All just a week after they announced my pass was increasing in price.

Does make sense to clip the points and just send all the trams to the station. Though reliability of the whole route has declined since they opened the Eastside Extension.

It's quite often trams are closely bunched together leaving long waits quite regularly.

Happens all the time, Ive seen trams almost end to end, but of course that means you’re looking at a long wait if you just miss one. I saw a departure board of 1minute and 28minutes recently and this was at peak time (around 5.30pm mid week)

I don’t know why in those case they don’t stagger the one behind ie wait at each stop a minute or so not too much to delay people’s journeys on it but just to close the gap slightly.

Not sure there’s any centralised control really though.

I've noticed that they're advertising that they're going to be installing more ticket machines and seem to have quietly dropped reference to the tap in and out poles that they were advertising a lot last year and already installed many of the poles for at the stops

They've even removed the "contactless travel" press release (archived copy), possibly hoping people will forget they even mentioned it in the first place. I suspect TPTB now want it integrated with the in-development contactless PAYG multi-operator bus fare arrangements from the get-go.

Does seem like they are gearing up for pay before board (no date confirmed). A lot of new staff being trained and the old ones who didn’t want to move over from ‘conductor’ to ‘revenue protection’ (not sure of the difference really) have now gone.

Yes all quiet on the tap and go though. No wonder my pass has increased with them installing poles they aren’t gonna use!

When they finally get round to changing over from being allowed to buy on board to a "you MUST buy before you board" scheme it will be a big culture shock, especially for those who might use not the trams that often. Using Nottingham for example when they switched over around 2014, how long of a grace period did they allow?

The ones they put in only a few months back don’t work!

I forgot my pass today so thought I’d buy in advance. Tried at loxdale machine not working at all. No conductor so got a free ride. On way back went to try at pipers row (where you have to cross a busy road just to buy a ticket as theres only a machine on one side) but was someone already there messing with the machine as he’d paid but the tickets were stuck coming out. If the machines aren’t reliable it also soon becomes an excuse of ‘the machine wasn’t working’.

I give it till 2027 till they’ve back tracked on the buy before boarding plan. Like they did originally all those years ago.

Not really. The tap in and out is still going to be used, They are now installed and active (not with contactless cards and swift cards yet) at WMR stations.
Am I missing the relevance of that with the Midland Metro?
