Well, they're Super-duper Voyagers, if I can put it that way. The seating layout is better, the luggage racks were bigger from the off, the plumbing was modified. Basically, lessons learnt from the 220s/221s were applied here. And they're better-looking.

They are still an unsuitably underfloor engined intercity unit with a too-narrow body profile for designed for tilting. Yes, they are better than a Voyager, but still not better than a 30 year old HST.

I disagree. Yes they have underfloor engines but they also have adequate sound proofing, although in terms of smoothness and refinement the 180s reign supreme. Also, there's a hell of a lot more space inside the 222s than the Voyagers, the seats are bigger, more luggage space, pedal operated doors that mean they don't close on you like Voyagers/390s.

My opinion may be controversial as I've never travelled on an unrefurbished HST, only a Mallard refurb, but I'd say that all things considered, 222s are as good as HSTs and put 390s to shame.
