The website makes no reference to advance purchase tickets, what it does say is that you can purchase a "Weekend Off Peak First Class Ticket" which suggests you'd have to excess (in other words, buy an off peak - you can't excess an AP, AFAIK) to an off-peak to get to buy a weekend first.

Upgrades are priced at £15.00 for adults and £5 for children for a single journey, regardless of the length of journey.

On weekends and Bank Holidays, upgrades to First Class on Virgin Trains is free of charge if holding a Standard Class Anytime ticket by approaching the Train Manager.

For a trial period only, Virgin Trains will be offering the Weekend Upgrade for £10 between Saturday 24th July through to Sunday 5th September between London Euston / Watford Junction / Milton Keynes Central and Rugby / Coventry / Birmingham and Wolverhampton.

taken off national rail.

that is reverting the price for weekend first between euston to the west midlands back to what is was about two years ago - proof positive that putting it up to 15 pounds has been shunned by the public.

Does anyone know whether this 10 pound trial is for Tamworth / Lichfield TV to Euston, as it was in the past ?

Which website?

Weekend First is available on Vrigin Trains from Liverpool to London for £15 on all ticket types. If you hold a Standard Class Anytime Ticket the upgrade is free.

In September I am traveling to Carlisle from Crewe via London, sounds long I know but I am going on the EC diversion from Newcastle to Carlisle, so my journey will look like this:

CREWE - EUSTON - KING'S CROSS - CARLISLE - CREWE.

If I was to buy an upgrade on the Crewe - Euston leg, would I be able to buy it from Carlisle to Euston so I can sit in First Class for the Carlisle - Crewe leg?

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks in advance,

No, it's per journey. As it's 2 journeys, you'd have to pay twice.

The rules on Weekend First Upgrade are a mess. Here is the best information I can find:
CrossCountry Weekend Upgrade costs £10, £15 or £20, depending on the journey being made.

Ticket Types that can be upgraded prior to travel:
Anytime Day, Off-Peak, Off-Peak Day, Super Off-Peak, One Day Travelcard. All other ticket types can be upgraded on-board, subject to availability.

Standard Class Anytime Return/Single:
Customers holding SOS/SOR/BVR tickets are required to purchase the relevant upgrade for their journey and can no longer from 18 May 2008 upgrade free of charge.
East Coast Weekend Upgrade costs
  • £25 London/Stevenage – Wakefield/York and north thereof
  • £20 London/Stevenage – Hull, Brough, Selby and all stations south of York and Wakefield
  • £20 all non-London EC journeys i.e. starting and ending at Peterborough or north thereof
Holders of all valid Standard tickets and passes can travel in extra comfort on EC services on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays in First Class accommodation labelled "Weekend First", on payment of the relevant supplement.

For the avoidance of doubt, this includes “Advance” tickets, Off-Peak Day tickets, Rail Rovers, BritRail, Railcard-reduced tickets and Staff Passes.

Passengers purchase a supplement on the train (for that train only) subject to availability of accommodation. Please note Weekend First cannot be booked at stations.
East Midlands Trains Weekend First costs £8 between any two stations in The Manual and £9 between any two stations in National Fares Manual NFM 06 CD.

Ticket Types that can be upgraded:
"Most Standard tickets."
First Great Western Weekend First costs £5, £10, £15 or £20, depending on the journey being made.

First TransPennine Express Weekend First costs

  • £5.00 Journeys between any other 2 stations
Ticket Types that can be upgraded:
All Standard class tickets.
National Express East Anglia Weekend First costs £7 between any two stations.

Ticket Types that can be upgraded:

South West Trains Weekend First costs £5 between any two stations. The supplement will not be discounted for children or Railcard holders.

The rules on Weekend First Upgrade are a mess.

What else would you expect when TOCs offer very different levels of service in First Class? As a business, they'll price their upgrade to what the market will bear.

I'd quite happily pay the upgrade on a longer distance Virgin or East Coast service, but wouldn't bother on a commuter TOC.

That's a reason for the price to be different, but John's post wasn't about the price. Why should the different levels of service offered result in such a complete mess of rules. This is somethimg that ATOC could quickly simplify (properly simplify!) without any adverse commercial impact on the TOCs.

Basically, East Coast and West Coast opted out of the "National" Weekend First scheme ages ago, and in the case of East Coast, the upgrade is on a per train basis, not per journey.

For those companies still in the National scheme, you can quite happily do a through Weekend First upgrade and just pay the highest applicable upgrade/ So if, for example, you were doing a journey involving NXEA (£7.00 upgrade) and EMT (£8.00 upgrade), you should be charged £8.00.

Cheers,

Barry
