You're forgetting you can walk between 8 and 9 at the north end and now in the middle of the platforms ;)

Yes, I did - which is rather stupid given how many times I've mentioned this issue!

Although buying a ticket to just Finsbury Park shows intent to avoid payment - which means FCC could go down the prosecution route and then settle out of court for a much higher amount than a straightforward PF!

They do that anyway judging from the number of mentions they get in the dispute forum!

Another sad part of the story is that there are stations which are only served by trains from another toc. Eg. Coleshill Parkway, run by LM but only served by XC. So if LM failed to provide ticket staff etc XC would foot the bill.

Burton on Trent is another, run by EMT but nearly everything if not everything is XC.

Tamworth another example. I know there is an hourly 350 there and some Virgin services but by far the bulk of services are XC, and if LM fail to provide ticket staff XC again foot the bill in terms of fare evasion.

I understand where you're coming from on that point. I find it funny how XC dosen't manage any stations.

As someone born in the mid-1950's I am appalled by the totally unacceptable level of petty dishonesty in this country.
All staffed stations should be gated. If a TOC can't be bothered to staff a station, it must be prepared to accept the inevitable consequences.
I would be a very unpopular RPI as I genuinely have absolutely no respect for individuals who feel it is somehow acceptable to board a train at a staffed station without a valid ticket.
"I was running late" or "the queue for tickets was too long" seem like pathetic excuses to me.

Why is when you were born relevant to the rest of your post? Are these opinions not associated with someone born in the 60's?

It's because there was no crime in the 50s & 60s.

Policemen spent all their days clipping cheeky schoolboys round the ear, while the kids walked uphill both ways to school and liked it.

Quite possibly, but surely one can only be born once :)

When I was travelling in the West Midlands in the 1960s all the small stations were staffed and tickets were always checked/collected by the station staff. I assume the situation was the same in other conurbations.

What about all these "born again" Christians then ? :?

As my girlfriend likes to say "ex-actly"

Narborough is another example where the ticket office has been closed at least twice in the last few months!!

Due to revenue allocation would XC lose that much? e.g. To take the Edinburgh [EDB] to Glasgow Cen/Qst flow. There are various routes between the cities mostly operated by ScotRail who will claim the bulk of the revenue collected from all TOCs on that flow (SR, XC, & EC). Now the XC service from Glasgow Central [GLC] to EDB (& beyond) may leave & arrive from unbarriered stations at both GLC & EDB, and if the guard was unable to check all tickets and certain passengers had not paid, then any loss would not just apply to XC but to the other TOCs too ~ if fact the greater loss would go to ScotRail. As far as XC are concerned they are more than compensated by the small amount of revenue that they receive from every ticket on that flow that ScotRail & East Coast sell ~ I'm sure that adds up to a pretty penny!

This is not worth starting a new thread for, but is vaguely linked to WCML ticketing.
On my Pendolino yesterday up to Euston, the Train Manager announced he was very happy to sell London Travelcards to anybody as he did his ticket checks.
I thought this was a bright idea.
I know you can buy them at stations or on line, but I had never thought of buying one on the train.
It certainly saves queing up at Euston LU station.
Doubtless it earns the TM commission too.

London Midland staff en-route to Euston will do this also.
