Southbound service blocking the line at Oxenholme. I am at Glasgow Central trying to catch the 1640 Euston which is showing as delayed. Station announcements are directing London passengers to go via Edinburgh - but looks like the 1830 Kings x is cancelled, so the only alternative is the very late one which arrives 0105.

Any travel advice from anyone in the know?

I'm at Preston attempting to travel to Glasgow, where all Avanti and TPE trains are being turned back south, so might be a serious incident if nothing is being let through north.

Could be a secondary consequence of no Glasgow or Edinburgh drivers to take the trains onwards from Preston since they are on stationary southbound trains at various locations north of Preston.

From a friend who works for Avanti 'Do not travel advice north of Preston' issued at 1705.

Over 15 droppers detached from the OHL.

Yeah - good call. (Hopefully no one will take this as an opportunity to revisit the well-hashed "Why don't Avanti have a crew depot in Carlisle?" debate, which of course wouldn't help here).

National Rail Enquiries:
'A fault on a train in the Oxenholme Lake District area means all lines are closed. Trains running between Windermere / Oxenholme Lake District and Lancaster may be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised. Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.'
'Avanti West Coast are advising customers not to travel north of Preston for the remainder of the day.'

Not sure how many passengers are aware of the severity of the disruption but some tweets suggest there is little information on the ground. Perhaps now might be a good time for Avanti to spread the message out on their socials.

Update: Just now, they've issued this message:

'We're advising customers not to travel north of Preston the remainder of the day due to a train fault between Oxenholme and Lancaster. If you were due to travel between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh on Wednesday 03 September, your ticket can be used on any Avanti West Coast service via the same route until the end of the day tomorrow, Thursday 04 September, at no extra cost.'

Great for those stranded - travel tomorrow. What do they do, find hotels for the night and Avanti will pay up? Also, how are TPE dealing with this? Are they putting buses on?

Also I'm in London wanting to get back to Milton Keynes but I read there's a landslip.

Hopefully sorted later but I'm Avanti Only!

I am currently sat on a stationary Pendolino at Penrith - I think the station team are really struggling with bus sourcing so there’s not a huge amount that can be done…. There are c. 150 passengers on the train so taxis in a small Lakes town aren’t going to cut it. Just patiently waiting for now, at least they’ve not turfed us off the train yet.

I'm stranded in Glasgow, managed to book a hotel. Avanti staff helpfully told me they wouldn't help, I should book it myself and claim through my travel insurance! Luckily I am on business so will be covered by expenses, but surely this is not in line with their obligations?

Also they are "advising customers not to travel" - we don't really have a choice! Why can't they word things in plain English i.e. "there are no further services tonight, please rearrange your travel for tomorrow"

So how does this tally with "A fault on a train?" or " a train fault between Oxenholme and Lancaster." Are they admitting that their train pulled down the wires but managed to arrive in Oxenholme? This sort of mealy-mouthed/ evasive "explanation" just undermines what little credibility they have!

The train did pull the wires down.

I assume the sleeper will be cancelled tonight - or can they re-route via WCML at short notice? It's fully booked from Glasgow anyway.

Any ideas from those in the know whether the service will be up and running in the morning? I need to know how early to set my alarm as I need to be in London as soon as I can!

But did it pull them down due to missing droppers?
It may have done, not sure. I’ve seen a picture of the contact wire missing. The droppers all looked intact. But it didn’t show the whole area.

No the sleeper will not divert via alternative route.
Too complex crew wise at such short notice.

As for tomorrow, all depends how bad the damage is, as it's only a few hours into the incident I highly doubt a repair timescale has been formed.

Arrived at Glasgow Central just as disruption breaking, booked on the 1611 to Liverpool. Very helpful TPE staff on the platform, quickly directed us across to Queen St with confirmed ticket acceptance on Scotrail, LNER and XC so will pick up TPE again at Newcastle if all goes well. Sounds like has been a challenging day on both sides of the country for the railway. interestingly XC were allowing TPE but turfing displaced Avanti passengers off at Edinburgh

I am travelling late on Friday south from Glasgow. Bit worried the line will still be blocked. Heading to Milton Keynes.

It will most certainly be fixed well before Friday. Nothing to worry about

It’ll have reopened and something else will have gone wrong before then.
You should be alright on Friday.

Usual customer Catch-22 of seeking advice on Avanti Twitter in relation to such matters as concerns about whether there will be coach transport to Preston for onward rail transport to their destinations given the 3 hours and counting delays, receiving the advice on Twitter to speak to local station staff at (say) Oxenholme who in turn are then saying they don't know if coaches are coming and when this is reverted back via Twitter the reply comes back that they are advising people not to travel north of Preston.

Avanti now changed messaging to 'Damage to Overhead Wires'.

We're advising customers not to travel north of Preston the remainder of the day due to damage to overhead wires between Oxenholme and Lancaster.

If you were due to travel between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh on Wednesday 03 September, your ticket can be used on any Avanti West Coast service via the same route until the end of the day tomorrow, Thursday 04 September, at no extra cost.
