It would appear for now that Rail Simulator does NOT utilise the dual core ability of some modern computers.

Check before you buy as i'm putting it off now as my single core won't match what the specs are whereas 2 cores will.

Aye can confirm it only uses one at the moment. Get 50% usage with dual core, but when I disable one it remains at 50%

Perhaps because it was posted by Kuju on UKTS that it would???

It's using 100% of one core beause it's single-threaded. What do you think disabling one of the cores is going to do?:???:

Quake 3 was multi-threaded and that come out in 1999! I wasn't impressed with MSTS being old fashioned single-threaded back in 2001, but to still have single-threaded games and applications out in 2007 is ludicrous.

I disabled one core to see if it was using 50% of the total processing power of both cores combined, or using 50% of one core.

im still not sure what the warning is in here. Some has posted a fact about what RailSim resources are being used, which is probably useful to some, but cant connect that to a warning or cautionary situation...

just me I guess.

So you are suggesting that somebody who has a dual core system which on one core falls below the required spec should just 'hope for the best'

:?

Many people are buying new computers for Rail Simulator. This is a warning to say that dual cores are not being fully used; if a specification is 3GHz some would buy a 1.7GHz dual core processor as it totals 3.2GHz power in total, however the game would only use 1.7GHz - well below the required.

Not to mention that you ARE KujuAdam on Rail Sim forums and just supporting your product which obviously has fatal flaws in.

Well yes KRS does have a few flaws it it, nothing terminal. Don't wish it away though, you might find nothing replaces it. I'm yet to believe the Microsoft effort, if it ever appears, will be good where KRS is weak. UK signalling and operations are entirely different from US for a start. We shall see.

So instead of hiding behind a pen name better come out into the open. or too ashamed to admit it now ?????

The rushed release of this product is doing no-one especially RSD any good at all - time to put hands up and be counted not pass the buck.

1 - Who was responsible for the release date

2 - Did the product actually see Beta testing

3 - Were EA forcing the issue because of a slack production schedule in September, while more important EA products are prepared for the Xmas market

4 - Why was the product released in this state

5 - Why listen to the community and do nothing

6 - Does anyone at Kuju/RSD/EA really care - after all all community discussion was disregarded with great ease

Maybe you should all have your wages/fees withheld until such time that the product is marketable and manageable

Now now, no pulling at pigtails or spitting. Come on you lot, get a grip.

Why get a grip - the only thing that needs a grip, are the throats of the people responsable I feel these are good honest questions that a lot would like to know the answers

I dont take kindly to back door mods. any problems with what I post

Take it up with Tom, Admin or any of the mods let them deal with it

I'll ask the questions that others don't want to ask, - this is a major cock-up no matter what anyone says or tries to look through rose tinted spectacles at.

Yes I can see that there is promise in the sim, don't get me wrong I would really like it to be a success - but poor documentation, that took a couple of weeks to compile - basic items missing in models - the next time anyone of you spend £100-£150 on a model loco and it has something missing like nameplates or is wrongly numbered - don't complain - don't pass comment just let it sit there.

I completely agree with Meld on this.

Today I managed to get hold of a second hand copy (yes already) from the company I used to work for, and I am so thankful I have 15 days to return it! You can't seriously believe this is worth its money!?

I'll agree with people when they say it has potential, but come on! What happened to all those lovely looking 3D cabs for a start? All I see is a horribly put together rushed hand drawn cab, which even make the very early BVE2 ones look better!

Then you have the bugs such as missing passengers, scenery and signals etc. Basics that should of been thought of first, surely!?

Sounds are just better than MSTS, but there's still room for improvement.

Then its just the even simpler things like giving you more information. Why can't I find out for the scenarios which train I will be driving, how long the route is and how long it should take to complete, without having to go into the folder to look at a PDF file!? And speaking of the scenarios, they are absolutely boring! Little AI traffic, some not visually pleasing or particularly challenging, but the ones that are challenging give very little information on what you're actually supposed to be doing...

And finally the trains themselves. Probably the best part of the sim. They feel a lot more like you'd expect a train to, compared to MSTS, but they are still pretty bad. One thing that gripes me is the brakes. It feels like they work in time rather than the actual pressure they apply. They either perform too well or not well enough!

I just wish Kuju/EA would address these problems instead of coming out with the corporate speak. I know its only been out for a few days, and even then they probably only got to hear what people thought today, but just a note to say something like; "yes, we are still here, we are sorry for the problems you are experiencing and we will fix them ASAP", would be nice...

Oh, and I don't know what Kuju/EA are thinking, but I don't think they realise what an influence on others reviews like this in the railway community are making.

All I'll say is that I am most grateful for not rushing in straight away and purchasing it.

Well, no, I can expand on that a touch.

I watched a preview video on the website for this game. Looked like it was going to be excellent, almost shoved a pre-order in there and then for it. But I was using the same amount of money to go off to Llangollen for their diesel gala, so I used the money more wisely!

One of my big irritances with this game is the horrid sound they've got for the HST. OK, the start-up sound is OK. Not bad, but not brilliant. The BVE4 HST sounds are far, far, FAR superior. I've recorded better on a analogue cassette dictation machine! The latter comment most definately applies with the moving train sounds. If a Valenta sounded like that thing in the preview video...

I'll praise them up for including British routes though. I've not seen or road-tested this product (as I said, I used the money to chase real trains), but what I saw of the Paddington - Oxford route looked OK. Not brilliant but it gave you a hint of what driving between the two cities might be like. Note that I use vague words like 'hint' and 'might' because what I did see did not make me immediately think of Paddington. Could have been a ficitional Euston as far as I was concerned!

Thanks must go to those who have spoken out against this product. It does show how bad it must be if people have already managed to find it second-hand! I'll wait until it is found in the bargain bin at the local garage I think. By then the bugs may have been fixed and a decent building of a route including Paddington may be found. I'm not holding my breath though.

I've now managed to segfault the Rail Simulator application 7 times, blue screen 5 of those and the other 2 crash to desktop.

Because im allowed a life outside of my day job...sorry if thats an issue to anyone......

And whose hiding? Ive been under the name of LucaZone since 2000. I wasnt hired for Rail Simulator until 2005.

I dont think anyone is ashamed of Rail Simulator, especially on the development team! We've yet to see anyone else release a new train simulation game in the last few years. As for rushed release, not really sure 24 months can count as rushed.

Everyone is entitled to decide what they wanted/expected from Rail Simulator, but if you dont like whats on offer, theres no stopping you going off and making your own. Hell theres enough people out there claiming they could do a better job, so lets see it!

During the 24 month production time - I daresay it would have been easily possible to meet or beat the physics offered by BVE with train swaying ...

Also - a total length of 24 months can't be counted as rushed, but the manual is small and very brief, doesn't give any information about routes - makes it look rushed.

I dont give a rats about you being on here since 2000 but you should have declared a vested interest in it. 2005 well thats 2 years and development was 2 years

What low standards they must all have. After 24 months the product was still not ready for release - obvious by the couple of thousand posts over on UKTS in the past few days.

Everyone is entitled to decide what they wanted/expected from Rail Simulator,

Yes a damn better product than what you have sent out

but if you dont like whats on offer, theres no stopping you going off and making your own. Hell theres enough people out there claiming they could do a better job, so lets see it!

If more of us had the skills perhaps we would - but the hype and build up promised a lot better than what we got - Offers from those that advised to test aspects out were rejected

But still you avoid the questions previously mentioned above - your total lack of communication by any of the development team after the game had gone for production was totally unacceptable for many.

Have you even looked at MSTS and its capabilities now? Thanks to the people who work on making it better day in day out, mostly for free, it is like a brand new train sim, and is getting better every day. It may not be a new game but it is certainly a different, and better, simulation to the one released all those years ago, and is still a better train sim than this latest shambles from Kuju.

Everyone is entitled to decide what they wanted/expected from Rail Simulator, but if you dont like whats on offer, theres no stopping you going off and making your own. Hell theres enough people out there claiming they could do a better job, so lets see it!

Yes. I'm sure there are plenty of people who could do a better job. But considering Kuju already have people who are (supposed to be) knowledgeable on train sims having worked on MSTS, and developed a name for themselves so they could get funding from big companies like EA, it makes more sense they do it, as the time and money it would of taken for someone else to do it, wouldn't have been worth it.

With regards to what we "wanted/expected from RS": You are the ones who put all the information, screen-shots and videos together to show us what we would be getting, so you are the ones who told us what to expect. Now you haven't lived up to your word you are blaming us for expecting too much... More bloody cheek!

And If you don't think 24 months is rushed, then why is this simulator of such a poor quality? Why are there amateur mistakes that even young children notice? Why the hell did you ask for advice from knowledgeable people only to blow it all back in their faces? And why couldn't you put another 12 months work into fixing them?

Don't get me wrong, most of us think this has potential, but when there are so many little niggles that shouldn't be there, plus the lack of manuals and developer tools, only you are stopping it from being this the great sim it should be...

Good point about developer tools - It been publically announced that the DevToolkit is to be made available on the 12th November. and these tools will be the same tools that the developers have used - not and edited version.

Question - If these tools have been used for the last 2 years why do we have to wait another month for them to be released or they bug ridden as well???
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I would say It is More bugged up than the initial release of MSTS , would any one agree ?

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

I tell you what I have a problem with, people that rant on about stuff who don't know what on earth they are taking about. I get the feeling that NOTHING would have pleased the train sim community, because in the real world when time is money there is a limit of what can be put into any game. I'm sorry that is a fact of life. There seems to be some mystical belief that this stuff is easy, and there are people queuing up to make models, or have the knowledge to produce add-ons. It's a complete myth.

Rather than sound off at someone who was on the original team who probably has no control over the final version (and no I'm not defending him, I'm frankly disturbed at the reaction KRS has produced) why not make some constructive suggestions on their forum? Alternatively, if you want the train sim of your dreams, get the books, go on the courses and do it yourself.

I, like others, are heartedly sick of the sense of self entitlement that the vast majority of the so-called train sim community has. Whether that's for freeware, or demands for things are that frankly unrealistic. I'm sorry if that upsets anyone but it needs saying. If you don't like the software, either help to improve it by making add-ons or don't buy it, it's really as simple as that.

Perhaps it isn't the best product out the box, but I actually think it's a lot better than it's been made out to be. You can rant and throw your toys out the pram for all you like, it really isn't going to do any good for the future of this kind of software which I can assure you is difficult and expensive to produce. There aren't companies queuing up to produce this sort of thing because its hard and very niche, so don't be at all surprised if KRS fails then nothing else appears. We've already had failed products in the shape of TAsim, MSTS 2, RSP and to an extent TMTS, so it's not beyond the bounds of possibility.

As said before everyone is welcome to voice their oppinions. Of course, they are not listened to in any official capacity here. Support facilities and a forum are available on the Rail Simulator website for anyone to seek assistance and offer advice.

From my perspective, the prospect of a train simulation game that evolves from the effort of a vastly knowledgable community with backup and support of it developers, has the potential to be a much greater success than has previously been seen.

Im involved, and I would encourage as many others to engage as well! There was previously talk of a 'Community Sim', and I think this is as close to that concept as we can get.

ps. can I get back to my N-Gauge modelling now? :P
