I need to get myself back down there at some point. That signal was far less accessible due to the undergrowth when we did the walk and I wish to walk further along and see if I can find the active signal further along

OK so a provisional plan is to do some walks the 'wrong' side of the Pennines on Sunday.

What time could people get to Stalybridge?

Ooh, I'm up at 4am on Saturday morning a d on the 2200 KGX - LDS... I'm going to struggle getting up and down to Leeds in time for that train to Stalybridge!

Ok it's not Yorkshire, but I've been thinking of a few more ideas for this year (including doing some of the walks we have already done, but in the other direction!)

One walk I would like to do is Bury to Holcombe Brook, then walk or bus (474) back to Ramsbottom (food?), then as much of the Stubbins Junction to Accrington line as possible. It's about 10 miles up to Accrington, so it may not be possible to do it all in one day; also there are bits at Haslingden where they seem to have built the A56 on the trackbed, so it might be preferable to bustitute (484) that bit rather than try to walk down a dual carriageway. But it's bailable at many points by bus then return via Bury or Accrington.

I don't think it's possible to get up on Lumb Viaduct so a bit of a detour via Irwell Vale may be in required, but the bridge before that is walkable.

That sounds like a good idea. I'd be up for that.

I have done all that, on two separate days. It is all interesting and I would be happy to join you to do it again. Highlights are Tottington viaduct and the remains of the 1.5kV DC OHL on the Holcombe Brook line and Baxenden bank on the Accrington line.

If we wanted to do Hayfield sometime, it'd definitely be worth taking the opportunity of walking along the Millenium Walkway as suggested here.

I went and took a look earlier today. The railway connection is "the finest retaining wall in the country's rail network" above

Agreed. How long do you reckon we should allow for it? Also would we walk or bus back?

I think you could do just the walkway easily in about 20 minutes, but the Torrs is quite nice and its worth walking up a bit further if we had time. Also allow an extra 10 mins if walking down from New Mills Newtown rather than Central.

It's less than 3 miles to walk up to Hayfield, so I reckon we could do New Mills Central -> Walkway -> Torres -> Hayfield -> New Mills easily in under 3 hours. We could then go up to New Mills Newtown and do a bit of Middlebrook back up to Rose Hill, depending on the trains, unless there's something better down towards Buxton?

Cheshire Day Ranger seems to cover Buxton (I'm sure it didn't used to!)

That'd be the Cheshire Day Ranger that goes to Buxton (Derbyshire), Glossop (Derbyshire), Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire), Whitchurch (Shropshire), Shotton (Flintshire), but not Stalybridge (Cheshire)

Seeing as we have strayed into my home territory with the Hayfield branch suggestion, I am happy to lead a walk along the Peak Forest Tramway between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Buxworth (The Dove Holes-Chapel part is a bit awkward), and then along the canal to Whaley Bridge, where we could follow the Whaley end of the Cromford & High Peak.

There are some excellent pubs close by, and more railway points of interest beyond the routes we'd be walking. .

One of these trips will take place on Sunday 9 August. Please post any suggestions for which of the above walks we should do, or feel free to suggest one that hasn't yet been put forward. However it does need to be in the Yorkshire area on that occasion.

I can't make this walk due to it clashing with Astle Park Traction Engine Rally this coming weekend. I will be continuing the celebration of my engine's centenary there, and if any RailUK members are there over the weekend, I will happily supply them with a free pint of the special ale brewed to commemorate this historic occasion.

When I say "free", I think my daughter is thinking of asking for donations towards the Bosley Disaster Fund.

I suspect yorkie has probably cycled it in the past, but it seems a lot of Castleford to Garforth is still doable. Also I still haven't done Cross Gates to Wetherby, but I know others have done this a lot in the past.
