I follow Frankie Boyle on twitter, he's apparently on a Virgin train that's been stood still so long it's being evacuated? Are things really that bad with the wires?

Reports that passengers have opened the train doors in order to get air, causing police to be called and rescue attempts halted in case passengers decide to go walkabout.

Also seen one report on Twitter a loco used to try and rescue the unit was unable to do so.

I assume it is 1M12 1140 Glasgow to Euston that is the recalcitrant train around about Crewe.

NRE are saying it is an overhead wire problem as well.......

Passed this at Crewe I think earlier (roughly 1800) - there was a DRS 57 on the back of a 390 on the Up Main, a 390 halted going the other way next to it on the Down Main and our train on one said and a southbound on the other passing them. It's near where the diveunder joins the WCML heading north that it's stranded.

Probably, yes. Would have thought it could be a panto fault on the 390.

Expect this to be in the media tomorrow.....of course blaming the TOC for everything even if it wasnt actually their fault. Also expect the passengers who decided to trespass on the tracks to be portrayed as saints too....

I thought Virgin evacuated them or tried to? Either way they've been on that train a very long time now.

They evacuated some and attempted to move it of course, it isnt as if they simply havent bothered.

Pretty much everything that went wrong, happened.

This is what NRE said at 2150:

Following overhead wire problems near Acton Bridge earlier this afternoon, all lines are now open again. However journeys may be extended by up to 10 minutes between Liverpool Lime Street / Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe. This is expected to continue until the end of service.
11:40 Glasgow Central to London Euston service. This train was delayed by more than 4 hours near Winsford earlier today. Passengers have been taken forward to Crewe station, and have transferred onto an alternative service to London Euston

As he's a comedian, I highly doubt he was being serious.

If it's Boyle then I think we can safely say the whole thing was made up.

Not my pictures but this is what the problem was. The top registration arm should be in line with the overhead gantry but is pointing out and the catenary wire had detached and lays on top of the overhead line gantry causing the tripping.

The brake problem was a secondary issue when the 57 attached.
