I applaud your honesty. Most people would try and rationalise their choice with arguments like "humans are carnivores" (we aren't - compare a human digestive system with a cat's) or "you need milk for calcium" (you don't, there are plenty of plant sources that are better than milk for various reasons) rather than admit it's all down to taste.

Fish is the food to me that is a bit more controversial. Whether anyone agrees to the practices or not most cattle, sheep, chickens etc we eat are produced for that purpose. I know people that don't eat meat because they don't agree with producing animals just to eat fair enough. However they eat fish which could become extint on some species such as cod. I know Salmon (with many problems) is farmed so I guess that it is a lot more difficult to farm fish. It is just something I have never understood - surely on principle fish is something we should be more careful about.

Really? Obviously those two Germans who took part in some nefarious activities with cooking and themselves weren't human then!

Did you read the rest of it? WITH SOME EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!

Could you link me to a Biological paper which states that some species are physically unable to eat members of their own species? Because I cannot find any paper which claims that in JSTOR.

And that's what you are effectively doing to the plants.

They might not be cute and have cuddly fur, but they are still living!

If you want to save plants from being eaten go vegan - as animals eat several times their own body mass in plant matter before you eat them you end up saving plants (not all plants - the only way to avoid that is suicide which is rather extreme).

Fewer screaming carrots that way.

Read it in New Scientist a while ago, We are also repulsed more by the smell of our own species rotting than say a carcass of a cow, dont get me wrong it stinks like hell, but its worse being next to a rotting human comapred to a rotting cow.

Luckily I have access to the New Scientist back copies (online), and I still can't find any trace of it. Even the New Scientist search comes up with nothing!

Tell me about it! The stench is awful, but I finally managed to get the patio laid over her.

She's 1 years old and lactose intolerant! Not sure they'd be best pleased with me.

Do bear in mind that there's a difference between lactose free and vegan cuisine: going vegan means excluding the eggs as well and makes several aspects of baking more tricky, because eggs are so often used to bind the cake mix/whatever. It can be done, though: a vegan friend at university put together numerous fantastic cakes that didn't have a drop of egg in them!

My other half had a lactose intolerance and an egg allergy when she was young. (Note that an allergy is far more dangerous that an intolerance, that'll generally just give you wind or discomfort.) She grew out of the egg allergy, but the milk issue remains. She finds that goat's milk is far kinder to her than cow's milk. This is commonly available in all big and several small supermarkets these days, unlike when she was young and her mother had to walk a pram across the city to bulk buy some frozen milk.

Blimey, this thread has gone on a tangent since I last looked at it :D

My cousin raised 3 pigs once, gave them names and everything (however I believe that was mainly down to her kids), fattened them up, then sent them to slaughter and ate them. Not something I would like to do to be honest - I prefer buying the prepacked meat rather than getting to know it before I eat it.

I also had the misfortune to be watching "Come Dine With Me" (wifes choice, honestly) and one guy was cooking lobster. He bought them live and put them into his freezer, then got them out and cut them in half (to kill them). Apparently freezing them nullified their nervous system? No idea to be honest but I can imagine there being an uproar if that happened to a furry 4 legged animal or a chicken.
