Just been told by Scotrail of vacancy withdrawn for role of conducter after over
three months sitting at "awaiting shortlisting". Yet another dreadful performance
from Scotrail HR, somebody has to start kicking some arses in there and get them to stop treating us, real people, like cattle. totally unaceptable. I'm pretty
sure that if the staff they hired performed in the manner that they do it would be a case of getting shot of them asap, but it looks like HR can do whatever they want with no one overseeing them. And yes this is sour grapes, but i'm not alone here after reading a lot of the stories on here regarding Scotrail.

Their central HR Department is run from the King Street bus depot, in Aberdeen.

The Group HR Director, John Evans is akin to a borg drone.

.....he's a former British Airways HR director... need I say more?

I can't say I have had much better experience from many other transport companies.

First (FGW, FCC):
Treat you nice, but when you want feedback, you may as well be talking to a brick wall.

London Midland:
Really lovely people. Even afterwards, they are great.

East Midlands Trains:
Do things required by law and seem very "grey" and boring.

Virgin Trains:
Good people. Very good at communicating where your application is at, but as most employers, when it comes to feedback, they can't tell you what you really want to know.

Northern:
Seem nice. Although when I once applied for a job with them, they contacted me over a year later inviting me to an assessment.

Stagecoach Supertram (Sheffield):
Liars! I was sent a letter saying I was invited to an assessment. I didn't go. Then I was sent another letter saying I was invited to an interview. I telephoned (as instructed) to book a date and time when they told me they'd sent me the wrong letter as I didn't pass the assessments. Why didn't they just tell the truth? :P

Reading a few of your posts id say your attitude for a job working within scotrail is all wrong anyway! Agian going back to your comment that the role of a train driver is easy. . . its that easy that you couldnt get a job doing it!

I disagree. He has good cause to be unhappy with FirstGroup.

On this site some months ago FirstGroup offered someone a job in a far away town, he packed in his job and moved hundreds of miles. They had a change of 'business plans' and he was left jobless in a town hundeds of miles from home in property he could not afford.

I am a former FirstGroup manager and know how little they care about staff. The FirstGroup attitude is all about profits and corporate image, nothing else.

Or when you look at those that have a job on the railways and get good pay and benefits such as free travel, huge discounts etc its more of a case of.

*Lets have a look at what you could of won". And it wouldn't of been a speedboat.

And the thousands of others who applied no doubt. At the end of the day, it's a very easy job if you can remember the hundreds of rules; and if you're a real enthusiast, that's something not too difficult to grasp. Some people on here seem to think that train driving is the equivalent of gaining a 1st in Atomic Physics; It is not!

Maybe not but there are hundreds of applicants per post and that is why it is difficult to get a job, to be honest there are many enthusiasts who want to become train drivers - it would be interesting to know why enthusiasts want to be train drivers tbh

The company does not owe any applicants anything and if they decide to close their vacancy it is their right, I do feel for you but any company does not owe an applicant anything until after shortlisting and interview

Being a real enthusiast does not necessarily help you at interview or the rules, I have taken many rules courses and the real enthusiasts tend to struggle as sometimes incorrect knowledge does not help, maybe train driving is more difficult to get into them getting a degree in atomic physics ;)

Let me get something straight here, I never said being a train driver was an easy job. I can totally appreciate the long months of training and long hours
at the helm what I meant was that its not as physically demanding and punishing as the job I do now. And given half a chance at working for Scotrail
would be a dream come true for me. I may slag them off a bit but I think critisism where its due. I have every respect for all decent hard working drivers and rail staff. I wont give up till i'm part of the team.

It's been mentioned that First Group can and do withdraw vacancies, and offer no feedback. Can't do anything about that.

I do however find it unfair when a candidate is awaiting shortlisting for said position, then when it gets withdrawn, they suddenly go from awaiting shortlisting to unable to apply for a similar position for 6 months, and not because they were not suitable, but because the position was withdrawn.

"goddam lucky they are at the present
climate to have such a well paid and relatively easy job"

is a quote from you is it not?

Relitively easy from a guy who has never been involved in the industry let alone drove a train! Its that sort of attitude from outsiders that give drivers and the railway workers in general a bad name, so how is the 40k+ salary justified? because its easy?

Its that attitude of thinking its easy that causes op incidents. And your right the training process is a bit of writing and studying, so you cant even get past the initial application stage!

My advice if you want to be a driver. . go to the busses!

I do Maintenance Depot Driving and can say its an easy 30k and it certainly isn't "hard work" apart from the bad hours. Carriage cleaning however? Now thats hard work.
I cant speak for Mainline Driving as I have yet to be given the chance to progress and I do not make comments about jobs that I have not done.

Have you actually done Maintenance Depot Driving? You'll find there are signals and magnets and SPADs happen on depots at least as often as on the mainline per driver. No passengers? So what, you think passengers make a job hard? I've worked with passengers before at a station *and* done depot work and you actually get far more aggro at a depot by other depot staff with conflicting interests than you do off passengers at a station. You've just got to not let it get to you. Having a 5mph speed limit makes it easy? The job would be so much easier if that speed limit was *not* there - saves having to concentrate on the speedo all the time or having to worry about getting disciplined because OTMR recorded 6+ mph.
Not saying its hard but you don't sound like you have any idea what your talking about, you comment about two types of Driving job yet it sounds like you've not done either, no wonder you've run into arguements with other members already.

Does not make sense.

Maybe the fact that I did not apply with Scotrail might have something to do with it?

I actually hope Mainline Driving is as hard as you said it is so that when I get there I don't get bored by it being too easy. I like a good challenge and hope that my impending move from Depot to the Mainline will be just like a Parking Attendant getting promotion to Detective Chief Inspector !!!
Somehow I doubt it will be that good though

well ok if you think moving a few MUs at 5mph down corkerhill is depot driving then good for you. I worked in Nottingham we had trains with wagons the length of your depot lol

lololol im actually in tears laughing here . . . if you think its a distracting maintaining a speed of 5mph, and reducing it to 2mph to go through a wash plant, then you have absolutely no chance of being a mainline driver!

well whichever phantom train company you applied for to drive mainline please dont mention that in your interview.

Don't assume everyone wants to live in Scotland!

That does not count as MDD Driving. Thats like me saying I've done Mainline Driving because I've had a go at the Class 66 simulator once.

I am well aware that Nottingham gets freight trains the length of Blackpool carriage sidings passing through. But I bet you had nothing to do with working them.

Firstly I never said distracting and secondly who are you to say who has any chance of being a mainline driver, I can guarantee I will be one *well* before you ever even get an Interview for one, if you ever do judging by your ill informed posts. Not to mention the fact that some of your posts are so unclear to understand I would not like to try and read/understand any repair book entries written by you if you were mainline driving.

I'm confused. What is depot driving then ? I sometimes have to shunt and wash my train before taking it into service. Does that count?

Proper Depot Driving is the Job of shunting, washing, prepping, fuelling & driving your own train around a Depot while pulling your own points and watching out for other train movements, signals and people walking around, then coupling/uncoupling units to form the correct formation of units going off so they go off into traffic OK the following morning when the mainline driver turns up to take it off. The Job requiries a 6 month training course for someone who has no previous driving competency.
It's not as simple as that - while the actual Driving is easy, the job can include a lot of aggro when you find faults on Units that you are prepping, or don't do your job fast enough, or when you have to do other things that conflict with the interests of other depot staff. A lot more aggro than you would get working at a busy station with customers I might add, which suprises some people.

Know exactly how you feel m8,they continually mess Applicants about & continue to get away with it.One of the Keywords in their Job Description is "Honesty" well its time that honesty applied to the Recruitment process !!! why not just be upfront & let applicants know where they stand.

I havent been on this forum now for a wee while mainly because of
PR**ks like rollwithit who feel the need to try to stop normal people
from airing their honest opinions and views on this forum. I thought
that was the purpose of forums but this diddy is obviously a very
negative person and probably has a very detremental effect on the people
who have the misfortune of having to work with and live with him, and from what I have heard Scotrail are in the process of weeding this chaff out and replacing it with a more positive can do workforce and i'm guessing this wind up merchants days are numbered so you never know I might even get to replace
the walloper.:D:D
