I held a zones 1-3 annual Travelcard purchased from the TfL visitor centre in St. Pancras late last year, valid from 01•JNR•20 to 31•DMR•20. I refunded this online last month via the Oyster website as I am not travelling for the foreseeable future. The Oyster card was last used on 16•MCH•20. The ticket was priced at £1,648. The TfL site made reference at the time to the fact that ticket refunds would be backdated to the last day of use and that the admin fee would be refunded separately.

Bearing in mind the dates of use I considered that I had used a 2 month 16 day Travelcard which would have cost 9.73 times £41.20 = £400.90.

I therefore expected to receive back about £1,242.10 (acknowledging the £5 refund fee) but only received £1,173.30 (plus the PAYG balance and £3 card deposit in each case, which I have taken off for ease of discussion). This seems to suggest that TfL has not offered me the “odd period” rate but has calculated based on the cost of three full months. They do sell “odd period” Travelcards on their site, so I am not clear as to why they have calculated it this way. I am therefore out just over £70. Whilst the sum is not a huge amount in my context, I still would like the full amount to which I am entitled.

Assuming my calculations are correct, I have contacted TfL twice via web form and a number of times over the phone. The web form gets acknowledged but no further response is forthcoming, and the phone either rings out or is on hold indefinitely. It is now six weeks since my last journey, and I am concerned that if it goes on for two weeks more without any action, the records of the date of my last journey will no longer be available – I stupidly failed to print off a statement before refunding the card, which is now of course gone from my online account – and they will refuse the remainder of the refund on the grounds that there is no proof of the last use of the card.

Does anyone have a way to contact TfL which will actually yield a response?

Thanks to Mike, and others who contacted me by PM. I had an email this evening confirming it is being looked at.

This thread made me look at my numbers. I have an annual travelcard dating January 1 to December 31 2020 zone 1 to 3, last used on March 18. Cancelled last week. Even if i assume they take a full month travelcard cost for January-March, my sums suggest the refund comes out at £1207.30 (1648-488.70*) yet i received £1083.70 before any payg credit.

*Monthly 1-3 cost £162.90 x3

Rereading the email I got, it said the refund online would be paid based on usage up to the date of cancellation, and a separate manual process would recalculate it to date of last use and refund the extra plus admin fee.

Where do you see that? The first TFL email said i will receive a final confirmation, but the second email had the same refund amount as the first.

I refer in post 6 to a personalised email I received earlier this week, not one of the automated ones.

Ah okay. I called TFL and got through to someone, they said that i should expect another email from someone later (current lead time approx 2 weeks) to refund the missing amount. The woman also remarked that the website could probably word this better.

On Friday I received the remaining expected amount by way of a “web credit” on my Oyster online account.

I last used my Travelcard on 17 March and phoned for a refund on 18 March. I was told it would be passed on to the refund department to calculate and it may take up to 10 working days. 1 April I still hadn't received anything and the card was still showing in my account so I phoned back and it appeared the refund hadn't been processed but the agent did it on the phone as I waited and worked out the amount which agreed exactly to my calculation for an odd-period Travelcard up to 17 March plus PAYG balance and £5 deposit with no admin fee. Received the refund 17 April because of Easter. I had to phone this morning for a refund for my daughter's Zip Card and got straight through at 8:15.
