I urgently need to reply Tfl with 10days...

I was coming from work last week, decide to go thru Euston Square station to Liverpool and connect to Barking...normally I go thru Camden becos my weekly ticket is Zone 2-4

If I need to pass thru other Zones, I usually top up my Oyster Card (on the same card)...

On this particular day, I had £3.80 PAYG on my Weekly oyster...so, I went thru Euston Square Station, went thru the lift and completely forgot to touch (inshort I was on the wrong side of the platform to my direction..

Coming out of the lift were the Tfl officers..and they said I didn't touch...I was sure I touched, then realised in a minute I didn't... I told them I completely forgot but the officer just brought out her jotter started writing all sort...

She asked where I was going to, I told her Liverpool (which I was on the wrong side of the Platform)... But she was more interested in her jotting than anything I had to say..

Well, I decided to let her write, I told her I wasn't on the train and that I have PAYG that can cover my journey.. All she was saying was but you didn't touch..

After her writing, she asked for an proof of ID, dob and address that I will get a letter from TFL..and signed..I was too tired to even read all that she wrote because my Son wasn't feeling well at home, that's even what made me pass thru Euston in the first place..to make my journey shorter to get home..

I asked if I was going to prosecuted but she said can't say until I get a letter...

She asked why I didn't touch, told her I forgot
She asked if I have another ticket to cover my journey, told her again that I have PAYG on my Weekly Oyster Card...she was writing my replies in her note..

She gave me back my Id and my Oyster that I will get a letter...

Got a letter yesterday, that I didn't have a valid ticket to cover my journey and that I should reply back about the Incident on the reverse side of the letter..Failure not to respond will result in the matter being progressed by Tfl without further notification..

Pls I need an advice from expert on this matter.

Thank you

I don't get it as your story is very confusing. Did you travel from somewhere (where?) to Euston Square heading east? Euston Square only has lifts on the westbound platform so you came up the stairs, went past the gateline, and then down to the westbound platform to exit via the lifts (which are ungated)? Did you touch in at the beginning of your journey?

The westbound lift was featured on Secrets of the Underground. You can enter the station and get to the westbound platform without touching in, then simply cross the steps to get an eastbound train to Barking. Something in this story doesn't add up, as well as the fact you don't need to change at Liverpool St to get a Barking train, a Hammersmith and City line train goes straight through. I think the passenger arrived on the National Rail/Tube or bus at Euston and crossed to Euston Square.

I'm confused.

Where did you start your journey? How did you get to Euston Square? Where was your intended destination?

It sounds as though you were heading eastbound towards Liverpool Street but, rather than use the gateline marked eastbound trains, you instead chose to use the (ungated) lift to/from the westbound platform. You forgot to touch in/out, even though the Oyster reader is right next to the lift and there are big signs reminding you to do so. You were seen forgetting to touch in/out.

I see. I think the OP might have meant that she was caught when exiting the lift at platform level. I normally only see LU RPIs positioned at station exits but I suppose it is possible that they are positioned there. It may be helpful if the OP could clarify where exactly she was caught, platform level or street level?

Even if that were the case, I still find it strange as that would mean going via the lift down to the westbound platform, then come back up to ticket hall level via stairs, then down a flight of stairs to access the eastbound platform to go to Liverpool Street (which is where I assume the OP was going, as opposed to the city of Liverpool?).

Questions to consider:

Were you familiar with Euston Square station and if so why did you choose to take the lift down to the wrong platform? How often have you used this station and what will the record of your Oyster card usage show?

If the investigators study the record of your Oyster card usage, will it show any pattern of incomplete journeys that start or end within your zones but where you did not touch in/out at the other end of your journey? If so, will you be able to explain these satisfactorily?

What is the normal route for which you use the Zone 2-4 travelcard?
Barking to Camden Town avoiding zone 1?

If I was making that journey I would suggest:

Either LO to Gospel Oak then Camden Road (and walk to Camden Town)

or District/H&C/c2c to West Ham, Jubilee/DLR to Stratford, LO to Camden Road then walk to Camden Town

or LO to Upper Holloway, walk to Archway for a 134 bus or the Northern line to Camden Town.

Barking to Camden Town, and Barking to Camden Road, are both journeys that default to 'via Zone 1' according to the single far finder.

Am I right then that using a Zone 2-4 travelcard for this journey requires touches at Pink readers?

I wrote that I was coming from work...

I can get to Liverpool, get a train to Mile End and get Upminster to Barking...It's a faster journey...for me

I sometimes go thru Euston Square station, if am on day shift, mostly closing time 8pm ish..but most Night shift I go thru Ilford-Stratford-Camden...cos my night is 12midnite-8am

I was stopped as I got down from Street level to platform..

It's not at all clear what journey you were taking. You're saying you pased "through" Euston Square, and on some other times "through" Camden, but where exactly does the journey begin?

And you can't really be travelling via Liverpool. That would be London's Liverpool Street station surely?

Write a letter to them but please make it more easy to read than what you have done so on here.

Its very difficult to make out anything you have written so that people can give you the right advice.

I don't understand your actions as you travelled from Euston to Euston Square.

Why would you cross the road and take the lift down, then have to climb the stairs to reach the other platform?

Why didn't you take the direct route and take the entrance without the lift but at least you don't have the cross the road nor do you have to climb any additional stairs?

No, you have sent a reply already and they have acknowledged receipt of this. Now you just have to wait to find out what they decide to do.
