A new Easements list has appeared on the RG website - apparently uploaded a couple of days ago but dated 31 Jan 2013.

I like this one:

700349
Customers travelling from Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen Street to Uphall, Livingston North and Bathgate in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted" may not ravel via Edinburgh. This easement applies in both directions.

I had no intention of ravelling via Edinburgh :D

And how are we supposed to interpret these (70334 to 700348):

700334
Negative Map Easemant. Carlisle to Preston via Hellifield Group

I was just about to say, were those negative map easements towards the bottom in the last Easements list?

Most of them use "local" maps which don't include those circuitous routes anyway.

There seem to be a lot of typos introduced, even in long-standing easements which are otherwise unchanged.

Most of them use "local" maps which don't include those circuitous routes anyway.

For journeys between the station groups referred to, yes, but perhaps they are supposed to bar all mapped routes (i.e. for any journey) between e.g. Carlisle and Preston which go via Hellifield Group.

Perhaps Indigo2 can offer some insight into how they are applied in the electronic version (from which these fairly incomprehensible easements seem to be lifted).

700298 seems to be obsolete already as it refers to only applying during specific dates last year!

Quite. They are meaningless as they stand and should never appear in a public document. One would hope ATOC had a robust sign-off process before documents relating to travel T&Cs were released ... but clearly not

700066 used to say Customers travelling from Northampton to Rugby and beyond may not travel via Milton Keynes. This easement applies in both directions.

but now says Customers travelling from Northampton to Coventry and beyond may not travel via Milton Keynes. This easement applies in both directions.

or was that changed last time?

I'm a bit confused too; not sure I can offer much insight! A classic example of a "map easement" (as it is defined in the electronic routeing guide) would be Easement 45: Journeys to Garforth from stations east of Selby may go via York. For a journey such as Hull to Garforth, the only map is map TP, which doesn't have a link between Selby and York and so journeys via York aren't allowed. The map easement says that journeys via York are allowed, in effect adding an extra link to the map for journeys involving certain origin/destination/via points only.

It follows then that a negative easement would have the effect of removing a link from a map or maps, for journeys involving certain origin/destination/via points only. But as far as I can see Carlisle to Preston is only valid on map LM, which doesn't allow travel via Hellifield anyway. So I am confused as to the point of the negative easement.

"Journeys via Liverpool may double back at Allerton . This applies in both directions."

But Allerton closed in 2005.

Could it mean West Allerton (open)?

Allerton is the former name of the main line platforms of what we know today as Liverpool South Parkway.

thanks, already was aware of Allerton & Garston being replaced by Liverpool South Parkway. Would have thought Liverpool South Parkway (mainline) might be a better name.

There are a few more than that (how could you forget easement 700288?).

I've uploaded what should be a full list here, including a few where one easement seems to have been replaced with a differently numbered one.

I've also uploaded a list of the easements where the spelling has changed without affecting the meaning, for if anyone is interested.

Customers may double back between West Hampstead and London St
Pancras Stations.

So now, travellers with tickets without a Maltese Cross that are valid via West Hampstead and wish to travel north of East Midlands Parkway are bound to use an all stations local stopping service to Luton Airport, change for an hourly service which again, stops frequently then change again for a service which goes north.

That easement was a legacy arrangement to assist travellers with having an easier journey to and from the north, but tickets intended for use in this way have for the most part have had a Cross Lonodn marker added. Apparently, the powers that be have been wanting to get rid of these doubleback easements for quite a long time. The Kings Cross ones went a year or two back. This one has gone and I wonder if the Paddington ones will disappear at some point too. I'm sure nobody will object to tickets that are valid via West Hampstead, but not marked with a Maltese Cross being invalidated for use out of St Pancras as a consequence!

Not that significant number of people would turn up at St Pancras and use a ticket routed Not Via London on a train out of there :p

Just thought I should mention that my favourite new easement has to be 700306:

On 26th December 2012 customers travelling from Reading to London Terminals may not travel on the Railair bus via Gatwick Airport. This easement applies in both directions.

Consider yourselves warned.

The easements list looks to have been updated again. A quick glance suggests most additions are due to the Reading diversions at Easter, but some odd/nonsensical new ones as ever...

700355 Customers travelling from Bracknell via Reading, may travel via Wokingham. This easement applies in both directions

Not sure how else one would make this journey?

700356 Negative map easements for INV-G01, covering WCML & ECML. Entered by Fujitsu under negative map easements work for RSP.

As seen as it doesn't actually go to Gatwick I assume it was okey to use the Railair coach to Heathrow Airport and use Heathrow Connect/ Express from there?

During engineering works in the western region journeys into London will be re-routed via Reading, Bracknell and Clapham Common.

That'll be novel...

As seen as Bittern is actually south of Soton airport I assume someone at ATOC can now map read? ;)

I think it just meant anyone coming from North of Soton Airport Parkway and travelling to Bitterne and beyond may double back.

IE, if you were coming from Winchester or Reading or Manchester or Inverness or Wick.

I'm delighted that 300393 is still in place:
Customers travelling via Norwich using fares routed Irish Ferries may travel via Norwich.

That's my favorite :)

I've attached a file with the changes from the last easement list to this one. They've removed a lot of typos, and added a few new ones (I don't think I'll buy a ticket to Airless any time soon, even if I can use it to go to Glasgow).

I'm most intrigued by easement 700363:
Customers travelling from Spital to Warrington Central or Warrington Bank Quay in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted" may not travel via Liverpool Lime Street. This easement applies in both directions.

Leaving aside the fact that this is the shortest rail route to Warrington Central, I wonder why they would want to restrict this particular ticket. Has someone upset a member of Merseyrail staff?

a more expensive "via Liverpool" ticket exists...

The "any permitted" looks like it is supposed to be for travel via Helsby, but why they don't just change the ticket route instead of all this route guide nonsense....?!

The shortest route maybe via Liverpool, but it involves travelling on Merseyrail between Liverpool and Hunts Cross, and I suspect this restriction is aimed at the Liverpool-Warrington diesel services.

The "Any Permitted" Anytime Day Return from Spital to Warrington Stations is a regulated fare, according to this list (see this page for more details). This means Arriva aren't allowed to increase the price by much, and can only change the route on the ticket if they really want to.

Some of the similar unregulated fares (such as Bromborough Rake-Warrington) are more expensive, but even there there are a lot of "Via Liverpool" tickets which no-one should ever be advised to buy.

Oh, and what I said about the shortest route is correct, but not comprehensive.

If you're travelling between Birkenhead and Liverpool South Parkway, the shortest route west is on the Northern line via Brunswick, but the shortest route east is on the City line via West Allerton. As the shortest route between Spital and Warrington Central goes via those stations, it's valid via Liverpool Lime Street in one direction but not the other.

If you're looking for a way to check shortest routes, soil's site is quite good.

I see the negative map easements from the February list have gone. So with this deleted:

700336 Negative Map Easement. Preston to Warrington via Manchester

is it ok again to use a Lancaster-Liverpool ticket to travel to Manchester? Peak fares are cheaper because Northern price the route not TPE.
