Uno officially launched their new electrics today.* Plan is to put them in service this month.

The journey starts here: we’re powering up to get down to zero

Today we’ve officially previewed the first five of our zero-emission electric buses on our newly branded Electric Shuttle. The five buses, which will run on the inter-campus shuttle between campuses and Angerland park and ride, are the first of 27 being delivered over the next 12 months. The special launch event held on College Lane Campus marks the start of a journey that is set to transform public transport across the region.

The investment, being delivered under the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) funding scheme, is a collaboration between Hertfordshire County Council, the Department for Transport (DfT) and Uno. The joint effort is all about improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions across the county.

While the primary benefit of electric power is the delivery of cleaner air, it also enhances the passenger experience with a smoother, more comfortable ride. The buses are also quieter, which not only improves the journey for our customers but also reduces noise pollution for everyone.

Look out for the Electric Shuttles, they’ll be charging into service this month!

[* Presser dated 3 March but on social media they've said it's today]

A little later than planned but great news. I've also heard that they're generally fully staffed now and not suffering the same shortages they've had over a number of years, making their services more reliable.

AFAIK the contract for Route PB1 finishes in March 2025, so I wouldn't be surprised .... frankly the interest in non-London work isn't there any more.

I'll predict Uno to regain the contract after 10 years with Metroline .... it is operated with an electric Optare Metrocity now .... Sullivan has said they won't use electric buses.
And sure enough...
ROUTE PB1: From Monday 31 March 2025
CHANGE OF OPERATOR
Following a competitive tendering exercise by Hertfordshire County Council Route PB1 will be operated by Uno from the above date.
An amended timetable will be introduced.

What will happen to that electric Metrocity bought specifically for the PB1? One would hope some sort of electric vehicle stays on that route or it'd be a waste of money seeing it go elsewhere within Metroline.

Your guess is as good as mine. Only a week and a weekend until we find out.

In the meantime, here's a random bit of light-hearted placeholder text on the route's Intalink page. Less light-hearted is that the timetable starts a bit later, finishes a bit earlier and has no 12:xx services.

Now that the summer vacation timetables have resumed, the BYD B12 quintet may not enter service for the rest of this academic year. Unless Uno put them on the 602/653 in the meantime.

Rather coincidentally two Uno Tigermoth branded buses running the 653 collided in St Peters Street yesterday afternoon.

Road closed for almost 24 hours after bus collision

A city centre road was closed for almost 24 hours after a bus crash.

Hertfordshire Police was called to St Peters Street in St Albans on Saturday at about 16:00 BST after the incident, involving an Uno bus.

A spokesperson for the force said there had been no major injuries reported, but the collision had caused structural damage to the building.

The road was initially closed in both directions by police officers, but reopened completely by 13:15 on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Uni bus confirmed one of its vehicles was involved.

"We're relieved to report there were no serious injuries to any members of the public or our driver," they said.

"The safety and wellbeing of our staff and wider community will always be our utmost priority, and we are fully cooperating with Hertfordshire Police as they investigate the incident.

"We have also launched a thorough internal investigation."

On Sunday morning, the southbound carriageway was closed from The Cock pub to the Town Hall before it completely reopened.

Photos taken at the scene in the morning show the police cordon still in place with marked police vehicles parked up.

The bus can be seen still at the scene within the police cordon.

Officers thanked members of the public for their patience and co-operation.

I belive 372 got side swiped at the back by 369 then 369 kept on going into a few taxis and a building...

Damage to 372 doesn't look too bad. Maybe when they fit new panels they can fix the every 20 mins frequency text, which was updated to 30 on the rest of the route branded buses except 372.

The BBC article photos are mainly 369 which is probably going to need some more serious bodywork at the front.

Uno's Hertfordshire network will undergo major alterations on 31 August (effectively 1 September). Here's what's listed on Intalink:

601 Welwyn Garden City to Borehamwood
Service being withdrawn. The Hatfield to St Albans route section is being replaced by the service change to service 602. St Albans to Borehamwood route section replacement is being explored.

602 Hatfield to Watford
Revised timetable and route change. Service frequency increased Mondays to Fridays. Service route extended to Hatfield Business Park Mondays to Saturdays. Sunday service frequency reduced.

610 Luton to Cockfosters
Revised timetable and route change. Service frequency increased to every 30 minutes Mondays to Fridays. Service route will operate between Luton and Hatfield only.

635 Hatfield to Hitchin
Revised timetable, route change and service route number change. Service route number changed to service 625. Service route will operate between Hatfield to Stevenage only.

635 Hatfield to Watford
Revised timetable and route change. Service will now operate between Hatfield Business Park to Watford, Thomas Sawyer Way via A414 and A405. Service will no longer be serving Bricket Wood.

653 St Albans to Welwyn Garden City
Revised timetable. Evening service frequency reduced Mondays to Saturdays.

X10 Hatfield to Luton - Limited stop service
Revised timetable and route change. Service re-routed in Hatfield, De Havilland campus will only be served towards Luton and Hatfield Business Park on the way to Hatfield.

An additional change to come that day is the adoption of Central Connect's 84B (Barnet - Potters Bar), which will be numbered 243 and extended to Hatfield.

Not particularly surprised about 653 evening cuts - I've been on some buses towards St Albans between 7 and 9pm where you can count the number of passengers on one hand. It's usually better in the Hatfield direction (leaving St Albans centre).

Departing St Albans City towards Hatfield, from memory, it used to be hourly after 1930 ish until 2211 but in the current timetable it's half hourly until 2036 then last bus 2139.

Based on bustimes.org, the new timetable is hourly after 1943 and last bus 2234 which is much better than 2139!

But we're back to the odd gap of 45 to 50 minutes during the day which were improved in the current timetable.

I think splitting the 635 makes sense if connections are good, as I assume it's replacements will be just as infrequent.

Fairly heavy cuts. The 601 will be missed, I wonder if the 725 has taken some of the trade away from it.

The 601 has/had a long gap in the afternoon which meant all the school children at Stanborough school couldn't use it (well, they could but would need to wait almost an hour) so the 725 pretty much picked up all of them. I am not sure why Uno decided to give up serving the school in the afternoon, as it often started at WGC with relatively few people and got very busy before Stanborough Lakes. That was like 40+ kids now using another bus company instead.

Finishing early and not running weekends also made the 601 less viable, as you couldn't rely on (if running late, it seemed common to just skip going to WGC and back at all - so you could wait two hours or more if you were unlucky). I suspect Uno must have wanted to kill it off by running it down.

Meanwhile they just can't seem to make up their mind what route to use for the X10!

Will see how it shakes out. The 610 changes will have a big impact to places like Brookmans Park which as I see it loses its entire service.

I used to use the 601 to get to St Albans in the morning. Was never particularly busy. Perhaps a dozen people on a double decker. I have never used the 653 because it is so slow (the detour around Hatfield which is its key purpose makes it timings unsuitable for WGC - St Albans journeys).

No real loss. Arriva seem to be getting more reliable recently which has the main reason I used UNO

Be interesting what they do with some of the buses, the double deckers may not be needed anymore with the x10 having its own fleet (as does the comet).

Won’t the new 243 cover the 610 section through Brookmans Park etc? Strange choice of route number in the series of more obscure and rural routes, yet apparently it is commercial. Numbering it 303 (or 303A?) would have been nice!

Shame about the 601. Until the 725 this was the quickest way from St Albans to Welwyn Garden City which used to be every 20 minutes with RMCs back in the day! Is there really no demand for a direct service? Or has the Herts CC sponsored route destroyed a commercial one?

I always thought the Borehamwood section must be marginal, it never was good bus territory through Radlett etc and is paralleled by the train- why does the 601 have deckers on? And the current timetable is awful, weird frequencies and sometimes two buses only a few minutes apart.

I don't believe we're seeing the full picture yet ... 243 is numbered thusly because 242 (the ex-Metroline route) is involved in some way.

There is still a direct route through Oaklands .... Arriva's 301-302 ... with 341 this was 6 BPH back in the 70's.

From what I've seen, the 242 is being extended to Hatfield and this new 243 also starts in Hatfield, so that could mean one route following the 610 routing and one fast via the Great North Road or maybe an increase to 2 buses/ hour through the villages instead. The route number must mean the timetables are co-ordinated in some way. The 610 is Hatfield to Luton only (just like term time only X10) from September, so no commercial Uno routes to Cockfosters, just the 298 they run on behalf of TFL.

Also the 242 since last Friday has turned up with double deckers and been the same every day since. Made for a really interesting perspective through Whitefields in Cheshunt, where I live and wonderful going through Goff's Oak and Cuffley so high up! I don't believe the 242 has had double deckers since the route was severed from London Transport's network.

I imagine the DDs are providing a lot more capacity than is needed! Certainly interesting to see them on the route.

Metroline did fairly often run double-deckers on the 242, long after it had ceased being a LT route, though they hadn’t done so in recent years. I remeber travelling on a Trident/President on the route about 10 years ago.

I've lived in Cheshunt for nearly 8 years and had family connections in the town for 16 years, I don't remember seeing double deckers on the 242 ever until now, the school journeys need them, but not really at other times. Only seen old pictures of it from when it was London Transport. To me, the 242 should never have been separated from London's network ever, is a very useful and long established link between two of TFL's terminuses, and a pretty route when it reaches the countryside and not like out here is that separate from London anyway.

TfL chopping the 84 was a far worse cut, certainly the section between High Barnet and Potters Bar. It seems inconsistent when they've maintained the bus connections between Potters Bar and other parts of North London.

There are pictures of more recent decker operations on Flickr, by searching "Metroline 242" - e.g. https://www.flickr.com/photos/165727501@N07/51502805232/ or https://flickr.com/photos/localbusdriver/16011314544.

The route runs entirely in Hertfordshire?

Yes, but Potters Bar used to be in Middlesex before Greater London was established.
That was 60 years ago, times change. My Dad grew up in Middlesex and was a teenager when it vanished and has not referred to himself as coming from anywhere but West London to me. I've always been confused by this idea that the Greater London Authority should be subsidising bus services for residents of a neighbouring authority just because they are just over the border and some point in the distant past there was some connection. I do also wonder how many residents, based on views elsewhere around the edge of London (and in other major cityies where suburbs just over the city boundary have been suggested to join the big city), would actually want to become part of London even for the chance of a slight improvement in the local bus network and then you have the same question up the road where the new border is.

Because London is fairly underbounded (like all cities in Britain), significantly so in the South West/ Surrey blur. It's boundaries (built up area) in reality don't stop at a hard line on a map and even so, the GLA boundaries are no good for logical transport planning and connections. From Waltham Cross, a narrow but continuous spur of development carries on up the Lea Valley for 6 miles towards and beyond Hoddesdon. Far from the only place like it around London, Watford always comes up as one of 5 large towns always mentioned as barely separate for example.

And the impact of London is felt for a very long way outwards especially in terms of housing and traffic, but services don't match up, which causes enormous but hidden problems and severely limits opportunities. In Cheshunt, we feel huge pressure to build here and slowly but surely the green belt here is disappearing, the logical thing to do would be to acknowledge we are apart of something far bigger than us and move away from GLA/ Home Counties being separate and a more regional South East strategic authority existing, bringing together the different areas on the bigger problems like infrastructure and transport. The expansion of contactless under Project Oval is one thing that backs up what I'm saying about London having a massive regional pull that desperately needs coordination and cooperation. Also, we all want the green belt to be protected, so why not plan the green belt together under one regional strategic authority? Right now all we get is incremental sprawl with no transport or services, that is terrible for everyone!

TFL itself runs 60+ cross-boundary bus routes, all I'm saying is whilst this gap between their franchised system with its regulations and the private mess of operators exists, why can't TFL run all cross-boundary bus routes? It makes sense. So if you see as me wanting London to subsidise bus routes outside, in truth they already are albeit inconsistently, it benefits both sides to connect Borehamwood to Edgware and Barnet for example or Loughton with Ilford and Walthamstow. And after introducing something like ULEZ, it really should be on TFL to ensure places like mine have proper and frequent connections to places in North London, especially to Enfield. Waltham Cross is an awful terminus. No route of any kind between Waltham Abbey and Chingford is unforgiveable too.

Tell me it makes sense that TFL don't run a route to Barnet from Potters Bar, when it does to Enfield, Chingford and Southgate all day. And that empty buses go from Potters Bar Garage to both Barnet and Waltham Cross when they could help provide a service along the way?

I agree and it's especially criminal with the garage in Potters Bar running routes like the 263 out of service when they could easily have changed the route to cover that cut in the 84. School service 626 shows there is no barrier!

I share your frustration with this. I grew up in south west Essex on the London border. Buckhurst Hill / Loughton / Debden (in the Essex County Council area) has the luxury of 4 bus TfL routes, whereas Waltham Abbey has nothing, and not even a non-TfL service to Chingford. Even more of a contrast is having the frequent and comprehensive 215 bus route to the Lea Valley campsite, which is perhaps far more buses than it needs. Yet nothing continues north to Sewardstone and Waltham Abbey. It would probably never be a well used bus corridor, but it should at least have an hourly service IMO.

TfL should certainly not bare all the burden of improving cross-border links. There should be much better co-operation between London and the surrounding counties, though it of course always comes down to funding.
Surrey County Council contribute to the 465 which explains why it extends so far south to Dorking.
I’m led to believe that Essex County Council contribute to those services in the Epping Forest district, but I haven’t found any evidence for this.

Apologies for going very off topic there! Cross border routes is an interesting topic that is perhaps worth its own thread.

Yeah I know Waltham Abbey very well, everyone says the same thing when it comes to buses. Expensive and rubbish and it feels like the town is dying a slow death because of it! Like the 242, Waltham Abbey should never have been cut off from London Transport. The town is really isolated now when before it appeared to be thriving. The 215 terminus at the Camp Site is nonsense, I don't understand why TFL won't just extend, even as just as a trial run. Apparently it would cost £700,000 a year to extend the 215 but that's spare change to them, given the social benefits! Some TFL routes have 2 terminuses like the 166 Croydon to Banstead every 20 minutes with 1 an hour continuing to Epsom Hospital, no reason something like the 215 couldn't do the same.

I only say it's on TFL to do all the cross-boundary routes as until deregulation, they served the same places I am demanding they should serve today. Waltham Abbey is a similar distance from the GLA as Debden so they should be getting the same treatment. I am hopeful that all the Home Counties will eventually franchise their buses and then them and TFL have the same regulations which means the issues around cross-boundary should solve themselves. Co-operation and co-ordination are definitely needed across the Wider South East on transport and loads of policies to be honest.

I think any contributions from Essex or Herts to TFL are unfortunately minimal which is a big problem. Seeing Uno slowly expand to cover odd TFL routes sure is interesting though. I think the experience has improved them a bit. Still not very punctual, but the staff are a lot friendlier!

Herts County Council is now under Lib Dem control and apparently they want to focus on public transport, but so far (and obviously it's early days for them) all we're seeing is services being cut back and split/merged into longer routes that are inconvenient for people going long distances (for split services, you have no hopper fare so pay twice, for example). I get that using one bus that goes all around the houses helps keep people served by a bus, but it isn't the best solution because some people have time constraints.

I have no idea if HCC will work closer with TfL for the many services that cross the boundary (I remember when buses went from Hertford to Enfield, not just ending at Waltham Cross), or whether HCC will seek to take more control of routes and timetables and reverse this process that will only serve to see less people using/trusting the bus for work/school and returning to their car.

Like I've said before, buses start too late and finish too early for many. Saturday services are often way worse still, and many places in Hertfordshire get next to no buses on a Sunday (for south Herts, it's pretty much buses that serve the Lister hospital only - as HCC pays a subsidy).

For a county council to want people out of their cars, they need to do something big or else nobody is going to be confident enough to give up their car.

Another consideration is that when there's disruption on the trains, ticket acceptance is given with Uno only (Arriva no longer accept tickets from Hatfield or WGC) and now the 601 is going, there's no easy way to get over to St Albans to travel when the ECML is broken. Obviously Uno isn't going to be bothered about that, but it's another aspect of where the county council needs to be looking at the bigger picture.

Part of the issue with cross-boundary services is the disparity in fares ... London fares are so far below the norm that covering the additional costs of operation is almost impossible. TfL will be unlikely to fund any expense, and Herts will prefer to fund additional services that directly benefit their residents. Extra buses around Stevenage, for example, or a service increase on 321.

Seeing the 601 buses now operating on the 242, I wonder if the service was cut to redeploy the buses currently in use here? I assume they'll be rebranded inside and out to get rid of The Alban Way branding.

Goodness knows what is happening with all the electric buses that were supposed to be in service last year, and still haven't materialised on all but the existing TfL ones and some on the park and ride shuttles?

The 601 was meant to be getting at least some EVs before the end of 2024 but never did as far as I can tell.

Yes that's always been the issue. But people who need to get to north London or even further in really don't care about the politics. HCC should have a system of allowing TfL buses to run into Herts to connect with local Herts buses.

TfL fares could extend into the county and be clearly defined as London buses. Bar the current price cap there's no standardised fares on different operator fares and nothing really needs to change. While pricing would need to be something to seek to sort in time, people just want buses to exist and run at convenient times.

TfL buses wouldn't be running up to Royston, but potentially along key routes to places like Cheshunt or maybe Broxbourne, Hatfield, St Albans etc.

I know this isn't ever likely to happen because in 20+ years I've seen little evidence that the council is seriously interested in properly managing and investing in public transport.

Goodness knows what is happening with all the electric buses that were supposed to be in service last year
A very gradual entry into service from (implicitly late) 2024 to 2026 was the aim when Herts CC announced their revised ZEBRA scheme in December 2023. Uno's launch presser in March 2025 said the shuttle five would be "charging into service this month" before that was quietly withdrawn; infrastructure works (including a DNO grid upgrade) are the likely holdups, and as with previous Uno stock introductions it may be in September again.

No idea if the other twenty-two have been ordered yet.

The 601 was meant to be getting at least some EVs before the end of 2024 but never did as far as I can tell.
Driver hearsay isn't the most reliable of sources. In last year's tender exercise for the twenty-two there were references to the 602 & 653, not the 601.
